  1. Going to catch the Sunday 9/19 matinée of Un Ballo at 2 p.m.
  2. I say limit fishing to territorial waters and give our navy the right to blow fishing fleets caught in international waters out of the such waters.
  3. I happen to have a bag of Wei Chuan Xiao Long Bao in my freezer so I took a pic. Next time I'm in Great Wall I'll see about taking a pic of the Vietnamese brand that you should avoid.
  4. Does Kelly have a legitimate beef with Amanda chopping up the porterhouse? When you chop it up, it's no longer a porterhouse. I would have liked more clarity in their rules. The other contestants had swordfish, salmon, lobster, and lamb chops. Kelly and Amanda didn't get just "beef," they were ordered to cook a porterhouse. Would it have been okay if Amanda grounded up the porterhouse and made meatloaf with it?
  5. Kevin made some comment about Angelo making Chinese food. I think he made some other derogatory comment about Angelo before because Angelo's forté is obviously Asian. I'm not a fan of Angelo but I'm also not a fan of a sore loser (who seems to dismiss Chinese food). Additional tidbit about Kevin from NJ.com:
  6. It's not that bad, in fact, it's the best Tex-Mex around Vienna/Tysons/McLean (the only other option being Annita's and On the Border). I haven't been in awhile though and the place is staffed (or at least it used to be) with people who look like they're from the Indo-Pak subcontinent. If that gives you the willies, you might want to eat before you go.
  7. I think Amanda is a ditz but what's with Kelly trying to hold out on the salt - which she then overused and got in trouble. I was just wondering why this episode everyone got a full portion of food, is it because politicians can't share plates? What a waste (so typical of politicians)!
  8. Did Alex steal the pea puree or not? How is it they have cameras everywhere and can't settle this simple matter? from bald Italian's blog: B.S. They were filming in the kitchen the whole time. If Alex never cooked any peas then he couldn't magically produce pea puree. None of the contestants believed the pea puree was a simple thing that can be prepared in a short period of time.
  9. The online menu states half pound burgers, the printed menu says 6 oz burgers - pricing is the same. What we got could've been half a pound but the medium was cooked medium well and the medium well was cooked til well done. The onion rings were great though, seasoned with herbs, salt, and some kind of spices - thick cut so that an order is only 6 rings but they were hefty. My wife's conclusion - not as good as Ray's and I agree. 2 chee-burgers, 1 order of rings, 2 Allagash - $40 before tip.
  10. So I watch Hell's Kitchen and those dolts screw up plenty of dishes. Gordo apparently has no problem serving the food that's ready while some diners sit and wait for their dishes. I understand that's a TV show but I also understand that some times dishes get screwed up and you don't want your perfectly cooked food sitting under a heating lamp while they refire the botched dish. The alternative is to prepare new dishes for everyone, which means throwing away perfectly good food. There's no good solution to this problem.
  11. Free entrees because 1 was 10 minutes late? Holy shit, I need to bitch more at restaurants. I don't normally order dessert so free dessert to me is a poor solution if there's a real problem.
  12. From Baltimore Sun: I watched the last couple of segments of this show. One dude baked some mac 'n cheese, forgot to salt it. Formerly fat boy partner of Batali Joe Bastianich gives him the thumb down. Fat boy judge Graham Elliot Bowles gives him a thumb up because he has the secret ingredient - love. Where's the hurl emoticon? Gordo calls the sack's wife out on stage and asks her what it means to him to be on the show. Yup, the wife's whining plea saves the guy who forgot to salt his mac 'n cheese. Anyone else watching this train wreck? From HollywoodChicago.com
  13. This is kind of a slam on Joe's Burgers - more expensive than Ray's by far and not anywhere near as good so we didn't go there. Instead, we went to Evo. If anything, they err on the side of overseasoned and overcooked. We had 6 items: Alemejas (clams), bronzini, charcuterie, empanadas, kefta, and chicken kebab. The clams and the kefta balls were both really overseasoned. The excellent dishes were the fish and the empanadas - crispy but moist fish and flavorful yet perfectly cooked empanadas. I idn't try the chicken kebab and the charcuterie is pretty average. This place is loud as eatdrinkmore notes. The baby couldn't handle the din and knocked herself out.
  14. Let's update the pizza finds of this city now that we've digested some of the new pizzas. I haven't gone back to Red Rocks or 2 Amys recently but my top 5 are: 1-3 Orso, Red Rocks, 2 Amys 4-5. Pupatella, Il Canale Have not been to Mia's, Comet, Pucci, Radius, 7th Hill, and Moroni among the notables.
  15. Can Banco get us discounted tickets? Performance Dates for mascaraing my nut (please indicate whether you want the left or the right done): Sat, Sep 11, 2010, 7:00 PM Tue, Sep 14, 2010, 7:30 PM Thu, Sep 16, 2010, 7:30 PM Fri, Sep 17, 2010, 7:30 PM Sun, Sep 19, 2010, 2:00 PM Mon, Sep 20, 2010, 7:00 PM Wed, Sep 22, 2010, 7:30 PM Sat, Sep 25, 2010, 7:00 PM
  16. I think Angelo is not only a pretty good chef, he has really studied the past seasons and has developed a strategy to win. As with other reality TV shows, the strategy is devious. I think Angelo is primarily liable for turning Top Chef into just another reality TV show.
  17. After blowing all my dollar bills at Camelot, I went next door for some Malaysian food. Started with the Deluxe Sampler Appetizer of satay chicken, otak-otak, curry puff, lo bak, and po pia. The lo bak (described as crispy pork roll) is made with some pork by-product but it's delicious (reminds me of kishka or boudin). The po pia and otak otak were both good and worth trying. I didn't try the satay chicken and found the curry puff uninspiring. Another appetizer was the roti canai. The roti, even if house-made, wasn't better than the frozen ones you can buy at Great Wall but the chicken curry was quite nice (with very flavorful slow cooked chicken). The entrees were chili shrimp (more sweet than spicy, which is how it's supposed to be according to Wiki) and Assam curry fish filet. The shrimp flavor was good but they were slightly overcooked (which happens often in Asian joints). The fish filet was lovely, similar in flavor and consistency as the fish filet I've had at Ruan Thai and Nava Thai. The street food dishes were the curry laksa pork rib noodle soup and Hainanese chicken. First the chicken. I grew up eating something called white chopped chicken - whole chicken boiled and then chopped into pieces served with a soy dipping sauce. MK's Hainanese chicken reminds me of that and how boring it really is. I also did not detect much flavor in the rice. The laksa, in contrast, had all kinds of flavor and the pork and noodles really absorbed those flavors. Personally I think laksa ranks up there with floating market noodle soup, ramen, beef noodle soup, and pho as great Asian noodle soups. ETA: never been to Malaysia or Singapore.
  18. We will be going to Un Ballo in Maschera and Madama Butterfly. If you want to suck down some champagne and sleep thru the opera like I sometimes do, let's talk about which performance date to attend.
  19. I wonder if Angelo did kind of sabotage Tamesha by not pointing out how much her dish sucked? Could Angelo be that much of a snake as to befriend someone just to stab them in the back?
  20. At Great Wall they carry another brand (don't recall the name but it's in Vietnamese) with many more varieties than Wei Chuan but I agree with you that the Wei Chuan soup dumplings are the best. I was actuall thinking about start a thread with pictures of the packaging to help people shop.
  21. My point is she deserved to go home. Since when is this a discussion about my posts as opposed to the show? In response to you, I didn't notice much swearing by other chefs. Why is my post random when it is directly related to the person who got booted tonight? If you don't think she deserves to go home, let's hear your reasoning.
  22. Kenny is one of the most talented chefs on the show and he was on the bottom today. Did he drop F bombs on TV? Was he living in denial? Someone who curses and gets sent home for bad food isn't really a random event. Do you have a point?
  23. Tamesha did not come across as a sweet person. She was too easily influenced and did not watch her language on TV.
  24. Thinking about visiting Annapolis. Seafood sounds good. Any thoughts on the above mentioned restaurants and O'Leary's (which is recommended by Tom Sietsema)? Hell Point is the only restaurant with 2 stars in Washingtonian. ETA: Got a room at the Sheraton Annapolis on Jennifer Rd for $55 plus tax for a Sat. night thru Priceline. Just bid on 3.5 star hotels only. I've heard people getting it for $45 a night but I started my bidding at $55. Pets are allowed for $50 fee but for the same amount we can hire a petsitter and leave the dopes at home. Reviews not so good for O'Leary's, now leaning towards Hell Point.
