  1. I get the feeling that Gordo is intentionally sabotaging his best contestants by putting him with the women team. For some bizarre reason, I've never seen a female team work well together on Hell's Kitchen.
  2. Thinking real hard about hitting Victor's Grill on Friday for lunch. It's the only parilla I know of....
  3. Nothing troubled me in the Buenos Aires episode. I think everything looked great and I really want to go try their food but I can't imagine eating at a parilla every day. BTW, has anyone been to Victor's recently in Falls Church?
  4. How descriptive is the menu? I don't speak Japanese and don't have extensive knowledge of the various styles of ramen. So the question is do I need to print a copy of the Wikipedia's ramen cheat-sheet? For those of you who have been to Ippudo in NYC, what about their menu? jparrott's post: grover's post: I found this Ippudo menu. Not exactly the same as Grover's original post.
  5. The second trio were (1) Potato & vanilla mousse with American caviar, (2) Conch fritters with a liquid center, and (3) Hot & cold foie gras and corn soup. The potatos were great with caviar, could've lived without the vanilla. The foie soup was super (mostly because we love foie gras). And the conch fritter had no conchiness to it...could've been ham. Pineapple-unagi with avocado sauce. Nicely grilled ell but why pair it with a cloyingly sweet pineapple? Mushrooms with egg 63 - nice dish of various mushrooms, kinda helped fill me up. Grilled skirt steak “Carne Asada” - grilled from medium rare to medium well, good flavor and a little chewy at times. Duo of (1) Pork belly confit with passion fruit oil - it was 2/3 fat, not at all appetizing, and (2) Fried egg with mashed black beans & pork - very tasty dish that helped fill my wife up. Coconut rice, crispy rice & ginger - their version of congee. I don't really care for congee, it's okay if I'm stuck in a hotel in China with a lousy breakfast buffet, but not as part of tasting menu. Pan dulce with cinnamon syrup - grilled cheese with syrup - this I can do at home. Overall - not my cup of tea. I would prefer 14 courses of regular dim sum, which would have cost much less. The service was really good so that was not a factor in my less than stellar opinion. FWIW, I also didn't think much of Minibar (more form than substance IMO).
  6. Latino Dim Sum Tasting Menu (exactly 14 courses) The first dish is some kind of whipped cheese in endive - nothing special. The next trio were (1) Tuna ceviche with coconut, (2) Mango-anchovy ravioli, and (3) Oyster with mango-lime oil. Couldn't taste the tuna because it was overpowered by all the other ingredients.
  7. Had lunch this week at Passionfish. I'm no connoisseur of lobster rolls but the version here has plenty of big chunks of perfectly poached lobster, with a light mayo dressing (not spicy like the one I tried in Halifax). The house-made hotdog bun was fresh and fluffy. I liked it but I don't go around comparing lobster rolls and this is the first lobster roll I've had in the DC area. Also had the grilled octopus salad. The octopus had a firm and slightly rubbery texture. I find the cheese and octopus combo palatable. But for the cheese I probably would've abandoned the octopus. (Disclosure - I've yet to be satisfied with grilled octopus, so take my words with a grain of salt).
  8. We've only been to Bond 45 and Rosa Mexicana. Both are edible and both have great views (in some spots).
  9. I guess I'd like some opinions on whether this expectation is reasonable in a restaurant like Orso. I certainly don't think one should expect the same level of service as that of 2941, but what about a request to hold the pizza order until the apps are finished?
  10. Sounds like they want to cash in on a trend but didn't want to spend the time/money/energy to learn how to do it. That was a really helpful review/observation.
  11. What was Angelo talking about? Did he say he received a Michelin star or what? All I can find about him is a sandwich shop. From what I can tell, he worked in various restaurants under celeb chefs - Jean-Georges Vongerichten (Jean Georges), Alain Ducasse (Spoon Food & Wine) and Stephen Starr (Buddakan) - comes across as a Top Douche.
  12. Reflux - maybe there are signs before the puking commences but we're pretty new at this.
  13. Parents vs. Public Spaces I side with the adults (it's the parents' job to figure things out without the entire world having to accomodate them).
  14. If you go to Chuck E. Cheese and are annoyed by the noise, it's your own damn fault. It's my experience that many parents treat all pizza joints like they're Chuck E. Cheeses. (e.g., 2 Amys, Pie-Tanza). I suspect once Orso becomes more well known, it too would become a mad house (although the pricing may be a deterrent to hooligan parents).
  15. I'd like some opinions about this. We're talking about casual pizza restaurants. I've avoided certain pizza restaurants in the past because I can't handle the romper room atmosphere. I never once considered telling the manager to quiet down all the howlers. As a new father, we do our best to keep our infant quiet but I can't predict when she's gonna puke or start whining. For that reason, we don't go to high end restaurants (or if we do, we go early). It would be annoying if someone tells me to move because our daughter is acting up at a pizza joint. Isn't that like telling parents at Disney World to keep their kids quiet?
  16. The Baja episode was interesting. The seafood cocktail he had reminded me of this dish I ordered at Pancho Villa (in Fredericksburg) on the way to VA Beach. I went back for their menudo but this sounded freakishly weird that I ordered it: The cooked shrimp turned out to be the worst part (overcooked and rubbery) but the cocktail with slimy oysters and avocados was delicious. Can someone explain what "nutty" tastes like? Andrew describes many things as nutty, including in the Baja episode, bone marrow. I know what bone marrow tastes like and I don't get how it's "nutty"? The seafood cocktail concept is nutty - eating squid stuffed with balls is nutty, brain tacos, blood tacos, etc. all sound nutty - but they don't taste nutty!
  17. Il Mulino - it's like she's back in the old country. Has anyone been to Pistone at 7 Corners?
  18. It's true that their dim sum selection is limited but in terms of quality, they're as good as any other NOVA joint. My current favorite in the metro area is New Fortune in Gaithersburg. More variety, slightly better quality, and cheaper.
  19. Friends with a 2 year old came to visit yesterday and I thought Chima would be a quick and unfussy meal and it was. We had a 5:30 reservation and surprisingly the restaurant was not empty - other families with small children were there before us. The salad bar wasn't huge but there were some nice prosciutto, sopressata, beef carpaccio, smoked salmon, shrimp salad, etc. (in addition to greens). They also brought out some cheese puffs, meat croquets, fried bananas, and I believe fried fried yuca. Then there's the non-stop meat parade - the quality is very good although you might not always get the exact temperature you asked for. There's very little wait for meat as there are plenty of gauchos. You also get your own steak sauces at the salad bar - I tried the chimichurri, two different hot sauces, and their horseradish sauce. The drawback is food coma - I fell asleep by 9 last night only to wake up in the middle of the night. This isn't fine dining - lots of people in shorts and flip-flops (including my wife) but it's fun dining.
  20. By Steve Siegel on CH - I generally respect his posts but how can his description possibly be accurate? Maybe his life has previously been blessed with non-soupy pizzas but I doubt it.
  21. Had dinner at Uncle Liu's but no hot pot for us. I did see other people eat it, it's a communal hot pot. Yes, you're all cooking in the same pot. For that reason, I'm not sure it's really a candidate for $20 Tuesday. The cooked dishes we ordered tonight - garlic fried fish (bland), sautéed A greens/veggies, scallion beef (where's the beef?), and spicy wontons were so so - not as good as HKP. Oh yeah, no booze of any sort yet. Actually, I don't even know if they're applying for a license.
  22. Meals tax is a sales tax and not an income tax. The diners pay the tax, the restaurant is merely collecting it on behalf of the government. In this case, Donna is stealing government funds. Substantively I don't see much difference between someone who refuses to pay his income tax vs not paying over sales tax that's been collected. In either case, you're keeping money that belongs to the government but for whatever reason, one usually isn't punished as a thief for not paying his income tax. If you get caught shopliftiing, you'll probably take a trip to the local jail. If you don't pay your income taxes, you can negotiate a payment plan or even have it discharged....crazy.
  23. I'm actually surprised at how little money the show actually gives to charity (or to winners in Top Chef). $100k really? I think they should up the prize money to $300k or something a little more sizeable, heck they get to deduct it so it's really only $200k after taxes. FWIW, I find Moonen's response ludicrous. He sells fish in Vegas...wow that's real environmentally friendly.
