  1. That's putting it mildly. The only one that's been this bad has been season 5 (New York). If it wasn't DC-based, I'm not sure I'd care to watch it this season.
  2. For my money, she's easily the best chef there. Kenny's good too, but wildly inconsistent.
  3. Just found out that this is where we're heading this weekend for a friend's birthday dinner. I've walked by the Hyattsville location a few times when I'm at University Town Center, but that's about the extent of my knowledge of the place. Completely off-the-cuff first impression is Olive Garden does soul food. In short, what am I getting myself into?
  4. When I lived about two blocks from here, I'd make a trip down for a bagel (or a dozen) as many mornings as I could manage. I haven't tried every bagel in the area (or anything close to it), but the Bagel Place makes a damn fine bagel, and it's good enough that I don't really care to seek out anyplace else to get one. Hadn't been here in a year or so since I had moved to a less convenient location, and I finally decided to get back this morning. Yup, the bagels are still every bit as good as I remember them. They do the requisite sandwiches on bagels as well. The sandwich ingredients aren't anything terribly spectacular, but when you're starting with a good bagel, it's still going to be a better than average option. A personal guilty pleasure: the cinnamon sugar bagel, which has a thick, brulee-like crust of cinnamon and sugar on top. Completely unsuitable for breakfast, but often enjoyed as a dessert when I'm just cobbling a meal together from random things I can find. Yum.
  5. $50 at Hook for $25 today on Groupon.
  6. I actually already pulled the trigger on a pair of tickets for myself and a friend, but feel free to join us in section 208 if you're so inclined! (and yes - I DID pick my section based on proximity to the 3rd base concession stand)
  7. I would hardly call it nitpicking to point out that RTS:ER is in an entirely different neighborhood......
  8. Sure, the burgers aren't, and the pizzas aren't likely to be either, but you're just going to assume it's not worth eating before it even opens? You're not only going to not give the place a fair chance, but chastise people who DO give it a fair chance? How can you offer anything resembling a worthwhile opinion if you're going to negatively assess places you won't even try once?
  9. Should I be the one to point out that this experience could easily be had for $20, and that it's taking place on a Tuesday?
  10. Wait, he's taking over the concession stand, too?!?!?!?!?!?! Fuck me, I might actually go now. I'm a sucker for Minor League baseball as it is......
  11. That's what turns me off too; the size comment was more to say that I'm not sure how much I can read into anything I see, given that I don't think those particular pizzas would be on the menu. But yeah, those particular pizzas definitely look closer to the individual pies served in my high school cafeteria than what you'd find at some of the other pizza options on the Hill.
  12. Holy shit. I'm not sure whether to laugh, cry, or buy my tickets.
  13. Maybe it's just me, but I'm not terribly excited after seeing some of the pictures from whatever opening party was thrown here recently. I think those are a good deal smaller than what he intends to serve, but those pizzas just don't look good at all.
  14. Tonight's grilled portobello wrapini (whatever the fuck that means), ordered during a quick dinner on a whim with the mother, was possibly the worst sandwich I've eaten. Ever. It looked like a grease slick, and had absolutely no taste whatsoever. These are the kinds of vegetarian offerings that cause those of us in the world who (foolishly) don't eat meat to cry themselves to sleep at night. Maybe I can put it best this way: I paid with a gift card, and I STILL feel ripped off. For whatever reason, the free soft-serve was way too thin and melted completely about 30 seconds after being pulled. There, are you happy, Jason's Deli? You've made a liar out of me.
  15. To the party that recently asked me AFTER I dropped the check to split their check 11 ways: please take note.
  16. Can't speak to Virginia, but there's either no law against it in DC or Maryland, or I've been a party to breaking said law more than a couple times. I can also say that I never have (and would never consider) doing anything intentionally disgusting to your leftovers when I'm packing them, but if I'm a bit weeded, your leftovers might come out a bit more sloppy than you (or I, frankly) would like.
  17. Not sure that it's terribly surprising that, in the post-Top Chef afterglow, Isabella's going out on his own. I am, however, a bit surprised that he's sticking around DC, but I'm not in the least bit upset about that.
  18. Wait, seriously? People ask this for this stated reason? I get people in parties large enough to get the automatic gratuity who ask for separate checks, but never so that they can dodge the gratuity. ......not that it matters, anyway, because I can (and do) share the gratuity across each check so as not to get screwed. Separate checks does not mean separate parties.
  19. So very, very true. And as I sit here thinking about it in retrospect, taking a credit card for a party of 8 or so when it's not a special event that requires extra attention does seem like overkill.
  20. Why would either of the reservation issues be odd to you? With a party that size, a no-show screws the server (and to a lesser degree, the restaurant). Additionally, if you lied about your party size (which happens a lot - I can't tell you the number of times I've had two people come in and ask for four or six seats because "the rest of their party is running a bit behind" only to quickly jump right in to start the meal and assume the others are gone), money is lost again because the table is underseated. Having a credit card on file is irrelevant - you really can't charge a no-show fee for a party that did arrive. It doesn't explain or excuse any of the issues you had DURING the meal, but I can completely understand why the restaurant did what they did at the start.
