  1. Now apparently aiming for mid-May or so. I have low expectations, given my dislike for Good Stuff and the large number of good pizza options in DC as it is, but I'll reserve too much snark until the place actually opens.
  2. So there's really no thread on this place? Really? Just outside the Rhode Island Avenue Metro station, there's an old school bus that's been retrofitted to serve as a food truck, and from this bus come what are, for my money, the greatest pork ribs in the Metro area. They're smoky, meaty, a little fatty, and overall just flat-out delicious. The meat is still on the bone, but comes off with little resistance, just as it should. You can get them sauced, but there's really no need; the sauce is nothing particularly outstanding, and frankly, the ribs don't need it. $20 gets you a slab of pork ribs, which on this occasion today was more than enough to serve two hungry friends. To go along with the no-frills-ness of the place, you get just humble slices of white bread go along with your ribs. If you're less hungry, $9.95 gets you a rib dinner with a pair of sides. There's other offerings too, such as the apparently fantastic beef rib tips, but I can't get past the pork ribs. They're literally that good. This is about as far from fine dining as you can get: everything served in styrofoam containers, and the only thing resembling a table and chairs is the nearest curb, but even if it's just once, you really need to make the trip.

So I know many people have championed Urban's chili - I think Tim Carman has been particularly "guilty" of this - and I've never bothered to try it on the basis that I can't bring myself to order chili at a barbecue joint. However, if somebody delivers you a large quantity of the stuff, you can't exactly say no, can you? And dear lord, this stuff is good. Smokey, slightly spicy, and just flat out delicious. Lovingly mopped up by a piece of cornbread, which is particularly good today, even after making the trip from Rockville to Silver Spring. Just open up "Urban Chili" somewhere right next door/in the back/in the parking lot, and I'll order it all the time!
  4. This was a noteworthy dish for me, as well. As I mentioned to the folks I was sitting with beforehand, this was the one dish that I was apprehensive about, just because I have such an aversion to cauliflower, but this was truly great.
  5. So I suppose I'll be the one to break the ice from the DR.com event tonight. Three words: Salli. Boti. Jardaloo. I gave strong consideration to ordering this dish again to take back with me. Sitting here now at home without more Salli Boti Jardaloo, I'm somewhat regretting the decision. Also, the fact that I can't get the chicken kathi roll very easily makes me sad. Much thanks to Chef Seth for having us tonight, and thanks to Gennaro for organizing everything. Let's do it again sometime!
  6. Sadly, yes. The next time I get a chicken from Sardi's that tastes seasoned beyond the skin and the smallest initial bit of meat will be the first time. I've not had that problem at El Pollo Rico in Wheaton (which I realize doesn't get the greatest praise from everyone; maybe I've just been absurdly lucky.)
  7. Outstanding meal yet again last Thursday in the bar. Had a Hell-Burger craving, and I can't say how happy I am to be able to go about 10 minutes from work and satisfy that urge. If there's a better way to spend $9 at a restaurant in Silver Spring than a Hell-Burger w/sauteed mushrooms and Vermont White Cheddar, I've yet to find it. Joined by a co-worker, who ordered the steak salad ($17.95) figuring it'd be a typical green salad with strips of steak laid on top. She was pleasantly surprised (stunned might be more accurate) to see that it was actually a healthy-sized sirloin alongside her salad, with sauteed mushrooms and onions to boot. I wasn't going to order dessert, but when dessert menus are placed in front of you and you have a weakness for coconut creme pie......well, even the best-laid plans. I feel like I shouldn't just come in and continuously sing RTC's praises to no end, but the fact is that this hit the spot in so many ways.
  8. My last paycheck was kinder to me than I previously anticipated it would be, so count me in for certain.
  9. Ate in at Zorba's about a week ago with a friend, and really enjoyed my meal. Had their sampler platter (think every stereotypical Greek dish you can imagine on one plate), and everything was great. Nothing was dry or burnt, and the dolmades were probably the best I've had (which isn't saying much - I generally hate the things and rarely order them). All in all, a great affordable option in Dupont Circle. Youngfood was right, too - Zorba's is now very much on my shortlist of places I'd take a non-foodie friend to with no hesitation.
  10. Oh man, money's tight right now, but I'm not sure I can pass this up for $37 inclusive...... Let me put myself down as a definite maybe, with a better answer to come in the not-too-distant future?
  11. Bumping this to add that I picked up 24 bottles of Mexican Coke at Costco in Beltsville/College Park the other day. $18.39 for the pack. Contrary to some prior sightings, this stuff is NOT made with HFCS. Also tried Kosher Coke in the past few days, and the Mexican stuff is far superior, if you ask me. (It's also the only Coke I'll drink at this point - I'm an outspoken detractor of the Classic)

  15. After having lunch at Flippin' Pizza in Silver Spring today, I'd happily add it to my rotation. I went with the $5 two slices and drink deal, and was rather pleased. It wasn't without fault, though - my slice of the Brooklyn (which Rocks described above) was a little on the limp side, and the crust could, as mentioned, use some salt. It's also a bit doughy around the edges but - call me crazy - I enjoy that in a New York style pie. As far as I'm concerned, my slice of cheese (with the caveat that I have not had a lot of the other pies that have been mentioned in this thread) was one of the best attempts at New York utility pizza I've had outside of New York. Is it the best pizza in the area? No. Is it pretty darn good, and a great deal at $5 for two slices of pizza and a drink? Very much yes, and when compared to other pizza options in the area (especially zpizza), it clearly comes out on top in my book.
  16. Seeing this bumped to the top and knowing that I'd be in Silver Spring today led me to stop in to Cakelove for a snack. Now, I know that the reputation has been less than stellar, but I figured I couldn't accurately give an opinion, negative or otherwise, if I hadn't tried the place. Let the bashing begin! Everything about my trip here completely disappointed me. I ordered two cupcakes, a vanilla cupcake with strawberry frosting and a 44th, advertised as vanilla cake topped with vanilla buttercream, caramel, and sea salt. (3.25 each) Where do I begin? The buttercream was nearly a solid mass and not creamy at all, both cakes were dry, and if there was sea salt, I'd be shocked. I liked the strawberry flavor of the strawberry buttercream. That's about all I have to say. It's been said multiple times that boxed cake would be better than what Cakelove is serving, and while I thought that was absurd, it's entirely true. $3.25 for one of these cupcakes is highway robbery. (As a bit of an aside, there was a woman working behind the counter on a red velvet cake who said to her co-worker, the woman who robbed helped me, "This cake feels like it's a week old!" And then proceeded to continue preparing it. Quality control at its finest, folks.)

Certainly, but it's not like he's saying something along the lines of "Michel Richard and Jose Andres get more attention than they deserve," statements that would both be implying, against popular opinion, that those two gentlemen aren't doing some special things in the DC area. Instead, he's saying that Warren Brown's baking isn't all it's cracked up to be. Many people agree. Why is it so controversial or misleading? Is there a reason that a chef or baker should be getting attention besides the quality of their goods?
  18. He needs a particular reason beyond the fact that he's a food critic and it's his job to offer an opinion? I mean, if he doesn't like the food, given the attention that Brown has gotten, doesn't it go without saying that the man is getting too much attention? Forgive me for being so bold, but it seems like you have more of an axe to grind than Sietsema does in this instance.
  19. Sitting here eating my free lunch (big pharma FTW) from zpizza, and somehow I still feel ripped off (big pharma FTL). A slice of the ZBQ was way too freaking sweet, and had none of the smokiness of spiciness I'd hope for in a barbecue chicken pie. Actually, it barely had any barbecue-ness (suck it, Mssrs. Merriam and Webster) to it at all. I didn't realize it was a barbecue chicken pizza until I just looked it up. The Thai is no better, with the bean sprouts looking like they've been out a bit too long and the carrot shaved so thinly that it had no chance of holding up in the oven. Oh, and the crusts both suck. Hard. The not-really barbecue has a crust that's probably closer to a cracker than anything else, and while the Thai has a decently textured crust, there's absolutely no flavor whatsoever. I do not exaggerate when I say I've had better from the big delivery chains. I realize that pizza that's been delivered isn't as good as getting it at the location, but plenty of these problems don't stem from the fact that this pizza took its time getting to me. Unless there's some sort of weird crust-flavor-zapping process which takes place in the box, of course. I'm going to assume that's not the case. This isn't my first time eating from zpizza, and it's not the first time I've been completely disappointed, either. Unless I'm getting it for free again, I don't see myself making this same mistake anytime soon.
  20. Alright, my work schedule isn't going to be fun, but I'll be able to make it (and frankly, I'd be pretty pissed if I missed this for work). Regarding the menu, I agree that it looks a little safe, and I agree that not having a noodle dish on there is a mistake. With that said, I think there's something to be said for having a couple of safer options on the table.
