  1. Port City Java, which was in the old antique shop space opposite the North Hall of Eastern Market, has changed ownership/management and name. The overhead sign for "7th St Hill Cafe" just went up today. The sign that has been up for a week or so in the door indicates it is closed for renovations and change in management. From what I've been able to find out, it seems that the franchise owner for Port City decided it was too expensive to renew the franchise because of the high rent. It seems to be completely new ownership, even though the note on the door only refers to management. I went to put this is a Port City Java thread and discovered there never was one. I liked the place and their coffee. It's been very popular in the neighborhood. I checked with the people at the newly named Hill Cafe on 15th Street and A, NE, and this place is not affiliated with them.
  2. Somehow this place has passed me by with stealth. I just really noticed it today, and it's apparently going to open in mid-May. (Well, that's the target.) Two of us spoke with a man working outside I assume is the owner, and he said that he plans outdoor seating and will also be applying for an alcohol permit to serve wine (or at least wine). Projected hours: 6AM to 9PM Mondays through Thursdays and 6 to 10 on Fridays and Saturdays. Closed Sundays. Since it has completely passed me by, I have no idea how far he has gotten with any of the permitting for outdoor seating or alcohol. I'm not sure how the immediate neighbors will react to those two facets of the operation. There is a decent space for a patio outside. (Visually, this is catty-corner from the northeast corner of the Car Barn, at 101 15th Street.)   3. Best coffee in western fairfax. There. I said it. Really, this is a no lose scenario for me. If someone had one better, I will go there. I have 4 small kids. I need a lot of coffee. I normally just get the house coffee which is damn fine. They normally use an Ethiopian blend. These days I get 2. One for the morning and one for the afternoon. Cold Stumptown is better than the office coffee. The standouts at this place are the lattes. They were closed during December because of a fire. While they were off their batistas won a regional coffee competition. Artistically they look good but taste even better. My favorites are the rose latte and the honey cinnamon. If you don't like coffee the hot chocolate is good too. They do pour overs too if you are into that. I normally like those but have never tried it because the house coffee is soo good. Seriously. These guys are good. If you haven't tried them yet, you should. I only wish they were there back when I worked nearby.
  4. Metropolitan Coffee House and Wine Bar is great. Federal Hill, not Inner Harbor, but close by. Casual, coffee shop atmosphere, but nice friendly spot with good breakfast foods. 902 South Charles at Henrietta.

Funny, I had an Americano (a large comes with four shots - they use a California roaster with a multi-syllabic name beginning with "D") in Del Ray just two days ago, at the pleasant Emma's Espresso and Wine Bar. I didn't try any of the baked goods, but the Americano was very well made, served in a ginormous (that didn't activate the spell-check alert?) mug, and was quite a good cup of coffee. The first few moments of service were addled, but instantly rectified themselves, and the staff there was as pleasant as can be. They have free WiFi, and Emma's is well-worth a visit if you enjoy independent coffee houses. They own the entire house, right off Mount Vernon Avenue, so there's ample parking.
  6. Maybe they will be better at coffee than pizza. I have a lot of respect for Nora and St. Elmo's as an institution, but the coffee leaves a lot to be desired, so they will benefit from a low bar.
  7. You read all these horror stories about Starbucks moving in, and forcing independent businesses to shutter, but you rarely hear it from the businesses themselves. I'd be very curious to hear about this type of thing from someone who has actually endured it. Same goes with Panera Bread, etc. It *does* seem like in expensive rent districts, these are the types of places you wind up with - why, exactly, is this? Are they actually making money, or are they loss leaders used for advertising? To Joel about Peet's (who is elbowing their way into town) - you're right, the coffee here is nothing special. It's "less bad" than Starbucks, I'll give it that, but that's about all I'll say.

  9. I'm sort of surprised no one has started a topic for this little gem. Owned and operated by a lovely couple - the wife works the front of the house and the husband makes all the food in the kitchen - this place is a shining star in the otherwise grim food world south of the Beltway. The coffee is good. The quiches are great. The lemon curd tart is freaking rapturous. If you are ever stuck down in the Restaurant Hell that is where I live, give this place a try. It's well worth a few extra minutes to get to.
  10. I'm embarrased to say that even after living across the street from Plush for the past 5 months, last night was my first trip to the gelato and coffee shop. I didn't try the coffee, which I should, but my gf and I did partake in the gelato. Their regular cup ($4.50) is three generous scoops of up to three flavors. They also sell by the pint and quart. All gelato is made in house and is made of whole milk, which they oddly pointed out twice during my ordering experience. They have quite a few flavors and I decided on chocolate hazelnut, toasted almond, and tiramasu. My gf went with raspberry and coconut (odd combination, but whatever). All flavors tasted were outstanding (we could have tasted as many as we wanted prior to deciding) and the consistency was really creamy and full. Their presentation is beautiful as well - each gelato flavor is garnished with a key ingredient (e.g., mint had candied mint leaves on top, banana had banana "flowers" made from slices of split and dried bananas). Given that this place is the same price as Cold Stone (gross) across the street, I know where I'll be going to get my frozen treat fix. I plan to get through all their flavors and try their coffee, although my favorite right now is Cafe Amouri. Here is a link to their shop Plush Gelato and Coffee
