  1. I will keep my eyes peeled as I inch my way up the Pike on my next pizza run. Not only are their pies great, everyone in the shop is so nice -- whether they're patiently taking a long phone order, when you come in for pick up or when you're eating in. Fond of Frankly, too -- it's not the same, but we're lucky to have better pizza around these days.
  2. I was driving through the South Lakes Shopping Center earlier tonight, and noticed that Seafoodie has closed. In it's place is now "Flippin' Pizza" (complete with image of tossed pizza dough in mid air), which offers "A Slice of New York" according to the sign. Doubt it's as good as Tony's in Fair Lakes, or Church St in Vienna. Anybody been yet?
  3. I'm surprised about the line out the door too. I haven't been there since the beginning, but after trying a slice of pizza and a sub, I thought they weren't going to last. I haven't been back since. (Not sure if you want a separate thread for Bronx Pizza or to move this to Dining in Clarendon)
  4. Ciro's is the Centreville location. According to their web site, they also have a place in Stone Ridge (new community out 50, just past South Riding). I'm not familiar with the Manassas one. For some reason, my wife likes Ciro's over Tony's, but they're the exact same place as far as I can tell. I prefer Tony's just because I was going to them for years before I found Ciro's. I live right in the middle of both of them, so they each get our business. The other place I like for pizza is Havabite in Old Town Fairfax.
  5. As a Terp, I spent a lot of time eating at a place called Ratsies on the corner of Route 1 and Knox, I believe. It's a pizza joint -- decent 'za, calzones, etc. I think I spent the majority of my time there devouring something called "Fried Balls"...not sure I actually liked them -- just liked saying I ate them. (to be clear, they're fried dough with powdered sugar -- not some weird sorority task)
  6. A coworker is touting the quality of Vace's pizza, saying it's the best slice in the city. Having never been, and not seeing a thread for it here, I ask for your opinions.   7. Been here probably 3-4 times this year. I always wait for a fresh pie before ordering. Crust is good, generally not soggy, usually crisp. Plain cheese only. Sauce is generally under-seasoned (have they heard of salt?) and less than inspiring. Not bad, but not worth the calories unless you are desperate. Need to try Vace one of these days.

I didn't have a traditional slice, but last night I had one of the better "New York Style" pizzas I've had in this area at Zpizza on Rt. 7 between Leesburg and Ashburn (they also have locations in Falls Church and Springfield). Although it is brand new, it isn't much to look at - a counter, a hot pizza oven and about 10 tables. But with the pizzas rolling out of that oven, I didn't care. We had a pepperoni and what they call a "Tuscan Mushroom". Both came out of the oven nicely crispy but still tender and chewy and foldable, while holding its shape - why can't more places do this right? The pepperoni had a properly greasy sheen, but without pooling and dripping when you take a bite. The mushroom had a slightly sweet roasted garlic sauce, carmelized onions, mozzarella and feta and actual musrooms other than the plain button variety with a bit of truffle oil. Hearty, sweet and a bit tangy - it put most tired, harshly garlic white pizzas to shame. Keep in mind - this isn't a Two Amy's or Pizzeria Paradiso, traditional "government certified Italian" style pizza. But it far surpasses anything else that I've had from any of those Italian / Greek places in every strip mall in Loudoun County, turning out soggy pizzas with too much sauce, two pounds of bad cheese and flavorless toppings. And the slices at the counter looked awfully good too.
