  1. But you're Asian too... c'mon... the she-crabs! *shakes head*
  2. I get the impression that the alarm she is referring to is perhaps a kitchen door alarm, and the girl just compounded the already stressful situation? Heh... that's what I meant. I just didn't word it well.
  3. I've been liking Trader Joe's chicken tenderloins or any sort of chicken (but the tenderloin helps me reduce my portion), cut up with thin spread low fat mayo on a whole wheat hot dog bun with cucumber and sriracha sauce. Basically a sort of simplified, smaller banh mi. You could also go the full effort and add the cilantro and jicama or white radish.
  4. Interesting article from Slate: http://www.slate.com/id/2157840/fr/flyout
  5. Bah! Only one person has responded so far. I'm on the verge of defecting to the LAME DUCKs.
  6. My friend is seeking a bread baking job starting in April. He is an French Culinary Institute trained artisanal bread baker. He is looking to work in either a restaurant or bakery in the metro DC area. Please contact me if you know of any openings. Thanks!
  7. Just wanted to make a quick comment here. I noticed an unsupportive comment on this thread, which was deleted. I'm not bilrus, but I really wanted to just say, please if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. Everyone is doing a great job, and keeping one another accountable. People are here to support each other and disparaging comments really devalue this thread for everyone. Anyway off the soapbox. Personally, I'm really proud of everyone.
  8. I would imagine some of it has to do with the tendency to get some really fibrous ones when you but them fresh. I'd say much like a lot of frozen produce they probably get them at their peak and freeze really well. Probably cos there's a lot less water so the water crystals don't mess up the cells. I've had some fried ones in SF that were amazing and were a little caramelized. I've been trying to replicate the effect with some sugar and the broiler.
  9. *bump* Wednesday, Jan. 24, 6:30PM, but flexiblity to come whenever. I welcome any LAME DUCKs to my house. Please PM me for the address since I'm not exactly keen on posting it publicly. We'll get Popeye's, y'all can bring drinks. Perhaps appropriate drinks would be 40's or champagne (that's an interesting story). I'm also going to insist on watching Beauty and the Geek, since one of my friends is on the show. =p
  10. I happened to be browsing Consumerist and they had a link to Real Simple's one pot recipes here
  11. I was disappointed to note that the Julia's Empanadas on Vermont Ave. recenty lost their lease. At least there are still the other locations. But it's a shame, it was one of the better cheap eats near me.
  12. He's a geek. And I suppose an acquaintance, he's a friend of friends. Hahaha.... and he turned into a dating coach. So for all those ppl who say this is the crummiest dating board, I refer you to http://www.nielshoven.com
  13. Ahh.. you're trying to co-opt us! Ahhhh.... <j/k> Ok... I am going to say Wednesday, Jan. 24, 6:30PM, but flexiblity to come whenever. I welcome any LAME DUCKs to my house. 14. Depending on how you like your coffee... I like vanilla soymilk. It adds some sweetness, and while it does have fat, you also have other benefits such as cholesterol reduction. Silk also makes a creamer that I've never tried. It's also great with oatmeal for a power-packed cholesterol sweeping meal.
  15. Just an interesting article about Old Ebbitt Grill by Alex Kapranos, the lead singer of Franz Ferdinand http://www.guardian.co.uk/food/story/0,,1753956,00.html Food writing, not really food reviewing.
  16. My family went to Bob's all together today. We ordered one of the set menus and a few extra dishes. The set menu included pork stir-fried with bamboo shoots, beef and kimchi hotpot with fish balls and noodles, sauteed spinach with garlic and fried salt and pepper shrimp. We also ordered the duck tongues, coh loh and sha-cha noodles with beef. The bamboo shoots were great - tender and flavorful. Hotpot was a bit too thin for my tastes, I usually prefer the Korean-style kimchi chigae. Spinach was nice and crisp. Shrimp was nicely fried and came with the heads on. The shells were nice and crisp, making them easy to eat in addition to the shrimp. Duck tongues were standard and yummy. Meanwhile the coh loh was less salty and meaty than last time - not so good. Sha cha noodles were chewy and tasty, though I don't usually like sha cha with anything except hotpot. Also, I discovered that for some reason the Chinese menu has a tapioca/boba option for the shaved ice, something not listed in the English version. Taro was a little undercooked, but the lychees were nice and juicy. All of that with lots of leftovers from five people + 1 rice-loving baby came to about $16 per person. Maybe worth investigating for a $20 Tuesday if they can accomodate us in the space. Lots more to explore compared to shabu shabu. *oof... I forgot... beef in the hotpot was a little overcooked and tough... =(
  17. How far in advance did you have to make a reservation? Is there any special procedure like at French Laundry?
  18. Haha... umm... we could order a family pack and bring it back... BYOB. i have a blender and some pina colada and daquiri accoutrements as well.
  19. I stopped in here last night and ordered the shish kebab. Sadly our service wasn't as most of you described. Our server was rather brusque, and he was trying to upsell us in every area in a rather obvious and slightly irritating way. He clearly did not seem to keen on interacting with us. However, the person who was bringing out the food seemed quite nice and friendly. The shish kebab was not bad, though it could have benefitted from some kind of sauce to balance it out, since it seemed like the spices that were used ended up being a little on the burnt end. Otherwise it tasted ok. To me the prices seemed a little on the high end, but this is coming from going to lots of small kebab shops and delis. The decor is definitely unique and very cool. A bit womb-like with all the reds. There were some awesome intricate silver orbs hanging from the ceilings, and a "waterfall" that we found slightly humorous. It was obviously just some regular plumbing pipes with holes punched in it.
  20. I thought we were considering Popeye's in Tenley! Jan. 22nd is a no go for me.
  21. For those of you who like sugar or honey in your drinks, etc. I was at Whole Foods and picked up some agave nectar (in the honey section). I'd heard about it for a while, but it was the first time I tried it. It's 20 calories per teaspoon, but I needed only a few drops to sweeten my tea to my liking. It also has a lower glycemic index so it "does not stimulate digestive insulin secretion as do other sugars." It doesn't have the nasty flavor of artificial sweeteners.
  22. If you can't do several readings, I suggest doing it first thing in the morning. It's probably the most consistent in terms of your body's behavior. Also... excuse me for being gross, but I know for ladies... there are certain times when one's weight tends to increase, and I know I've had five lb. fluctuations around then.
