  1. Hinata has party platters. Depending on the prices you could also pick up some uncut sashimi-grade stuff from Daruma and cut it into plain ol' sashimi yourself. Also at one point my aunt bought really good sashimi from H-mart, so that might also be a possibility.
  2. cucas87 and I went to Beck's tonight. They finally switched out the Sam Adams and replaced it with Delerium Apple. I talked to the beer sommelier and they've got a few more things in that he's really excited about. If I knew more about beer I would be able to tell you what they were. The mussels in white wine were good, but this time around I had the ones with chorizo and fennel and they were superlative. Realized the smell from the fries remind me of Old Bay.
  3. Mom and dad for self-critiquing their own cooking constantly, which taught me how to evaluate food. And my mom who smells every food before eating it - a crucial part of the cooking and eating experience. Never measure, cook by sight, smell and touch. My sister for buying a cookbook that described the amazingness of duck so well that it was the first time I drooled at the thought of food. My aunt for encouraging me to try all sorts of "odd" food an offal - fish eyes, tripe, eel, duck tongues, shrimp heads, etc. Taught me that you can usually make everything at home, and better. Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Little House books. The food descriptions... yum.
  4. Somewhere on the cheaper end is Lemon, which is a crepe shop not far from Trinity College. They had a great selection of sweet crepes and their savory crepes were buckwheat ones.
  5. I'd forgotten about Alounak, which is in Bayswater. Iranian food, with some more unique stuff for adults and then the kebabs would be a reasonably safe choice for the kids. And I love the name, and the variation is quite nice... S&M Cafe, which stands for sausages and mash. They have one in Portabello.
  6. Unless it's today... No Pants Day
  7. Why does it matter? It's a simple criticism. There are tons of criticisms like that on this board. Do you want to call them all out? Some of it is the fun of the banter. You seem to be taking it as a slight against yourself. It's not as if any of us would spit in her face if we met her (at least I don't think). You've made your opinion clear repeatedly, to the point of having a polarizing effect. You actually are adding fuel to the dislike-fire. Naturally you're entitled to your opinion, as is everyone on this board. But it's as if you enjoy poking the beehive with a stick, repeatedly.
  8. CAPITAL AREA FOOD BANK CAN DRIVE Summer seems to be a harder time for most charities since it's not the "giving season." So I'm going to do a collection of canned food at the picnic for the Capital Area Food Bank. Just bring your goods to the picnic and I'll take care of dropping them off at the collection centers. There's a most-wanted list of items at http://www.capitalareafoodbank.org/support/donatefood.cfm Also if you would be more interested in donating money, they have a matching grant where $1 will buy three meals. You can donate online at https://www.capitalareafoodbank.org/donation/donate.cfm We will not be taking collections for this at the picnic. The deadline for matching donations is June 10. Thanks!
  9. And then there were the Dunkin Donuts commercials. And via Serious Eats, the simple one-page Rachael Ray endorsement contract. Personally I'd be entertained by feminine hygiene products. I can just hear her cirpy little voice, "Do you ever have that not fresh feeling? I DO!"
  10. I think that in the area, it's probably the best. That doesn't say much, because most places aren't all that great. I haven't been to Izakaya in the P St. Whole Foods, which has sushi and a ton of other stuff. In the overall DC scheme, there are better places. The other day I had octopus sushi that was chewy and inedible. I actually had to spit it out, because I couldn't bite through it. But some tips for ordering there if you do go. If you order lunch specials, the sashimi is a better choice than the sushi, but it's more optimal to pick and choose from the paper. Also don't get the scallop, they don't cut it the optimal way. Rice for the sushi is a little better than for the rolls.
  11. OOOOHHHHH... edit that. We are actually meeting at 2:30PM. My mind is going. Bear with me.
  12. Yeah ham and leeks seems to be a pretty popular combo. My parents just stirfry some country ham and leeks together with maybe some jalapenos. Can be a bit salty, but we usually end up having it with rice and a bunch of other dishes.
  13. No exact headcounts needed, but we want to see how approximately how many folks are interested in going along, so we know if we have enough drivers. Not to mention, I don't want to leave folks behind either.
  14. Now that the weather is awesome, DanielK and I are coordinating a taco tour of Little Mexico in Hyattsville/Riverdale. So... May 20 meeting at 11:00a.m. 2:30PM at College Park metro station. We'll car pool and make our way to the different places. So in addition to La Sirenita, if you know of any places we should visit please post about them in the Little Mexico thread Hope to see y'all there!
  15. So from what I've seen at VinoVenue in SF, it's usually one centralized machine. It's actually a pretty neat looking thing. There are folks who are around tending machines. Now as to whether they are also there to cut you off is another question.
  16. There's a post on MattBites about Michelada http://mattbites.typepad.com/mattbites/200.../michelada.html
  17. Oh don't get me started with your LAME DUCKing!
  18. Just because I end up putting these in a whim, but really... if Rockville Pike gets to have one. Restaurant Kolumbia next Wednesday. 12:30PM. Bar lunch.
  19. Hehe... does this go under Intrepid Traveler? WaPo did a story on this three years ago. Are these still the best places to go?
  20. Yeah I would add barbecue to that list as well if that's your thing.
