  1. My wife didn’t believe me when I said (yes, BEFORE the match) that Halep was going to win. Tiriac was fun to watch. He looked scary. Apparently, he still does.
  2. As I said, I’ll be surprised if Djokovic doesn’t win. And, unfortunately (since I’m a Federer fan and like Nadal just fine), I think that Djokovic comes out of this stronger, having had to play real grass court tennis today.
  3. Yeah, but that’s the National news. The party needs to sink major resources into state & local races. I would think that local news media would see this as a money maker and glom onto it, knowing that people like soap operas especially when they know the local “stars”. Abrams’ race in Georgia, Beto’s in Texas, the Fla. Governor and Senate races — all got lots of media coverage. From what I can see right now, all eyes are on the current Democrat Presidential clown car and not these other key places. Shouldn’t Beto have made a run for the other Texas Senate seat, etc?
  4. I don’t mind 20+ Democrats all feeling that they are Presidential material & all of us tuning in to find out which we might think are correct. What I mind is the way too little attention given, by the party & the media, to turning the Senate & the state legislatures. Right now, we could really use the focus that was given to Beto’s Senate run in Texas, etc in order to make sure that states like Virginia don’t remain problematic on major issues like this one.
  5. Still watching? Can you now see how this guy can beat him? I’d be surprised if Djokovic doesn’t win, but he better figure out a way to keep up his rhythm & concentration over the long haul in order to do it.
  6. Absolutely. And then, most likely followed 2 days later by another classic with the winner vs. Djokovic.
  7. And she’s out, dominated by Halep (in my opinion). It’s nice that the announcers fauned over her first set, continuously stating that Halep only won 6 more points than Gauff. To me, that was a meaningless stat if ever I heard one. I hope her people are brighter than to tell her that her comeback win in the previous round (a great match to watch, but, as has been said, not great pro tennis) & this one were where she needs to be going. She looks like she can be a great player with her focus, speed & determination. But, coming under the ball over and over, waiting for an advantage or mistake, does not seem to be the future of women’s tennis. Unless your goal is to be Italian & beat Serena in one US Open semi that is. Don: I assume you know that none of those 4 players was me. I was in Brooklyn, playing at my new “high 4.0” doubles level (solid 4.5 seems to now be in the rear view mirror).
  8. Wow, but did it have to be at Venus’s expense? Great ending. And just the 1st round.
  9. Listening to JMac hold forth to ARod during Jokovic’s 1st round Wimbledon match. He just spent 10 minutes explaining why Felix is the great upcoming player of this generation & why, 5 years from now, we’ll be debating if he’s one of the greatest ever. He went on & on effusively about how good Felix is & gave Denis some props, but with reservations about his lack of height. I just had to hunt down this thread.
  10. I also stayed in Staunton, but went to Zynodoa. I remember it as being very good.
  11. Did I mention that I spent a day at Roland Garros while in Paris?
  12. We spent the entire month of May in Paris in a rental apartment on the border of the Marais & the 11th arrondissement but were too busy eating & drinking (& doing as many museum-y things as Ginny could drag me to) to post about each, so let me just list the places we ate in case anyone wants details and cant wait for specific posts (or doesnt believe I will ever get back to do this):-Aux Bons Crus-Ma Borgogne-Le Mary Celeste-Clown Bar-Fulgurances-Bofinger-Robert & Louise-Le Saint Sebastien-Waly Fay-Korus-La Bicyclette-L’Ange 20-Breizh Cafe-Grive-Fish La Boissonniere-Amarante-Le Comptoir du Relais-L’Avant Comptoir de la Terre-L’Avant Comptoir du Marche-Fifa-The Brooklyn Pizzeria (go ahead - say something - I dare you)-Chez La Vieille-Chez L’Ami Jean-Cafe Moderne-Detour-Brasserie Bellanger-A La Biche Au Bois-Au Passage We returned home yesterday. Thankfully, the apartment did not have a scale and I neglected to buy one when we arrived. I still plan to write more about some of these places, as we had things that others may wish to hear about (or I may just want to write about and remember vicariously). I want to publicly thank some notable members of MFF & CH -- Voyager, Ptipois and John Talbott -- for making many recommendations, answering many questions & even breaking the virtual friendship “wall” and getting together in person. And “joethefoodie” (MFF), aka "Weinoo" (eG & DR) aka "mitchleeny" (CH) who always shares his experiences and recommendations with me after he & Ms. Foodie (okay: “Significant Eater”) do their own explorations. Anyone who wants to know anything about any of the above places doesnt have to wait for me to write about them, but should just contact me (on this thread or off it, by pm or e-mail). Since I'm a food board junkie and friends are on boards other than this one, there are already some posts about this trip from me on MFF, CH & even Hungry Onion. And, yes, we did a lot of sightseeing, shopped at markets and attended many events (ie; Roland Garros) that I’ll be happy to go on about if there’s any interest. The Paris Metro system is unbelievably great, but the miles of walking was the only thing that has kept me from, well, being even more rotund.
  13. Several years ago we had a similar need while we were driving down to Florida from NYC. I chose Fayetteville (for no particular reason except location right off I-95) and we went to Fullers, a buffet that I cant recommend as BBQ but a place that I’ll remember fondly for years. The buffet table had more varieties of home style southern cooking than I’ve ever seen &, for a buffet, it was fresh and tasty.
  14. Well put. I have a “problem” in that I alternate with thinking that I really dont want to know the things we now get to know about our entertainers, restauranteurs, athletes, etc & then thinking that its more important that we do (& act upon it). I cant help but reject the “head in the sand” theory and walk away from those that disgust me.
  15. Well, its almost 300 miles from Brooklyn and I had to look it up to even know that so I'm not going to be very helpful here. But, if you're there on a Wed night, it seems that "Seneca Lake Duck Hunters" http://www.senecalakeduckhunters.net is open to the public and has "wing night". Looks about as quirky as it gets out there. eta: since its pretty darn close to Watkins Glen, I can't help but wonder if you're going to the 50th Woodstock Anniversary concert there (in August).
  16. Seattle is not until July. We’re flying to Paris for May. That’s why we had no miles left to use.
  17. Thread drift alert - we just bought our 1st First Class tickets for a July trip to Seattle to visit friends. It really was a big decision, since they were almost 3 times what coach seats would’ve cost. But we didn’t have miles to spend &, well, it just seemed like a good idea.
  18. Passing thru Baltimore on our way home from Florida, dinner at Clavel with friends who live here. All was excellent. The cocktails were interesting, tasty and well crafted. The queso fundido perfect, the tacos high quality (I had tongue and lamb - both solid). The shrimp ceviche was nicely done as well. Chips, nice bean salsa — what more could I ask for? Oh yeah, friendly, non-pretentious service too. A winner.
  19. On the positive side, that’s quite an Alabama defense they’re continuing to assemble, this time courtesy of the Giants (can’t find the article link, but I’m sure you all know what I’m talking about).
  20. Today’s NYT. Good article (In my opinion). Gets the various positions out there, although not with too much (enough)detail. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/23/us/politics/medicare-for-all-lobbyists.html
  21. Thanks for this. We’re gonna be in Charleston for 4 nights in mid-March & will probably include a revisit out to Wild Dunes, where we’ve previously stayed. Knowing there’s a dinner possibility out there might make our scheduling easier.
  22. 1- I would love to think that the majority of wealth (aside from inherited) is accumulated via “individual talent”. However, I think that, instead, quite a bit of it is “earned” thru the ability to put other peoples’ talent (& general labor) to work for individual benefit. 2- Is this belief absolute or is there room for it to be relative to how these “earnings” affect the rest of the pack?
