  1. We've pretty much decided to go here for dinner next weekend (Sat 10/6) and have made reservations. Sounds like our type of place.
  2. It's been quite awhile, but it looks like Ginny & I will be in D.C next weekend. Our plan includes Sunday evening (10/7) at Dino's bar for drinks and dinner. Starting around 7pm. Just sayin' (hint to anyone who might want to join us, if that wasn't clear enough).🍷
  3. I can only speak to the Brooklyn locations, where I believe that the plan is to close their Prime Meats restaurant next door to the original Frankie’s and expand Frankie’s into one side of the space (where the bulk of seats are) & create a wine bar on the other side, where the current bar for the meat place is. Additionally, they plan to open a pizza place several blocks down, where the Brooklyn Cafe Pedlar was (closed about 8 months ago), next door to a beer bar called Congress. In my opinion, all good ideas.
  4. Okay, i'll take another shot at this. For many years in baseball, umpires allowed a "phantom tag" of 2nd base when the fielder was trying to turn the double play. The fielder needed to only be in the vicinity of touching the base before throwing on to first. It was accepted this way for years. Then, finally, in the off season, MLB informed all officials that they were to call it by the book and that 2nd base had to be touched by the fielder for the out call to be made. So, does anyone here think that, in Game 7 of the World Series, prior to MLB telling the officials that this rule was to be enforced, if an umpire had taken it upon himself to enforce it during an 8th inning ground ball play there would have been a calm acceptance by the fielding team? I'll go out on a limb and guess that a Manager would've gone ballistic and gotten thrown out of the game. And that MLB would've been shocked that the umpire handled it that way. Again, I'm not denying that Serena's team broke the coaching rule. Or that she isn't responsible for her actions and potential consequences. But I just can't see the defense of the seasoned umpire who decided to interject himself and his strict interpretation of official consequences in a crucial match when other options were well known & could've been employed? (Like an aside to Serena during the changeover before the 1st penalty that went something like "tell your coach to stop sending signals... he's your employee and his actions, received by you or not, are against the rules and will cost you if I spot it again" or before the 3rd penalty "you have to stop now... if you continue, I will issue another penalty and it'll cost you a game"). It's not about whether Serena knew the rules, its that she could've been given perfectly acceptable chances to rein it in. And wasn't. And that's on him... and his overall ability to officiate.
  5. I get it. She caused the situation with her reaction & should've had more self control. I just think that the umpire's latitude in this case was inconsistent with what he's seen fit to do elsewhere and way more concrete and hard assed than the norm (which, to be honest, is his reputation). He did what was allowable, but he also knows better. As a total aside (yep, let's make this about me) - While the "young" (in their 40s) 4.5 players I play doubles with in Bklyn are busily trying to push their way up the ladder, I tell them that I'm basically trying to manage my decline. When I'm in Florida during the winter, all my older 4.5 doubles playing friends are, one by one, getting themselves dropped to 4.0 so that, at age 65, they can remain at their comfort level. As time goes by, poaching becomes, more and more, for eggs.
  6. Agreed on just about all counts. I mean, it’s not like she could’ve expected that the guy would come down off the chair and ask if she was ok or needed anything 😂Of course it’s her fault for melting down & putting herself in that position. And she was going down either way. However, I don't think that the rules are as "cut & dry" as you state. While officials can't change the penalties once they've called an infraction, they do have a lot of latitude about calling them. The coaching issue that started the dominoes falling has frequently resulted in an aside to the player to tell your coach to stop and not issue the 1st penalty. Especially the way her initial interaction with the chair on that call concluded, she may well have thought that, when she slammed her racquet, it would result in a 1st and not a 2nd (point) penalty. As for the 3rd (game) penalty, have you seen the footage of this umpire's similar interactions with at least 3 superstar male players who cursed or loudly demeaned him? Not a penalty assessed. He certainly could've at least warned her to stop or he would issue the penalty. First rule of officiating in any sport is to do everything possible to not make yourself a moving part of the game. Some do it better than others. He blew it. (5.0 huh? I'm impressed)
  7. F.A-A and Shapovalov play against each other in the 1st round on Monday. I really hate this but I have tickets for that day and will be more than happy to watch.
  8. So, there we were, 2 rows in, watching him semi-struggle thru a 6-3 1st set win against G.Melzer, who is an experienced solid player from Austria. Then, the 2nd set flew by, as he started hitting incredible shots and returning what looked like ungettable blasts from his opponent. He won that one 6-0. It's gonna be an interesting US Open for him. As an aside, here's one for the books. I have never ever, in over 50 years of watching and playing tennis, seen a player double fault 5 times (yep, not a typo - 5!) and win that game! 3 aces and some really good points. He's clearly still a work in progress. 5 double faults in 1 game - unbelievable.
  9. He's thru to the 3rd (final) round of the Quals and I plan to go watch his match at 3pm. Its on a medium back court and follows Robredo vs Mahut, only one of whom will make it into the tournament after all these years.
  10. Another year, another chance for Felix A-A to break through. Unfortunately for him, his performances this year so far puts him in the quals. again. Yesterday he got thru the 1st round of the quals. but not convincingly. He needs to win today and tomorrow to get into the main draw. Hopefully he will, but he's still not looking like he's making the transition with a bang. eta: we went to the Quals on Tuesday and spent an hour watching Andy Murray hit, drill & play points with Gasquet. We saw several good 1st round Qual. matches, then got seats on a practice court to watch Shapovalov. Nice.
  11. You all do realize that the article was published in a satire site, right? Never happened. Not that, based on our 1 dinner there, it couldn't. That's what makes the article good satire. We'll be going back this winter on our way to or from Florida. I'll let you know if they do a good pasta w/broccoli. 😇
  12. Actually, I'll put my 2cents in and say that, although you are/were seem to be correct in this case, your generality doesn't really stand up for another reason (other than RWBooneJr's, which I also agree with). That is, there are quite a # of folks who take pleas and/or settle even though they know they are not guilty simply because they don't believe that they have the resources to win. Sometimes its "better" to not take a chance in our system.
  13. This is an excellent documentary about a champion Pakistanian female squash player who grew up in Taliban controlled territory & had to disguise herself as a boy to play sports or get educated. Highly recommended & now seems to be airing on PBS stations. http://www.pbs.org/pov/wartobeher/
  14. Just to be simple minded about this, I paid the $450 for the CSR + $75 for my wife as authorized user/cardholder this year. That's $525/year. Two year total cost = $1050 I got $300 credit within a month by paying for my garage with the card (they consider this travel -- if they didn't, then my gas would've gotten me the rebate eventually even if I didn't do anything else). This'll happen again next year. That's $600. I received 50,000 points for signing up, which can be used for cash at 1 cent/point. That's $500. Two year total credit = $1100. So, the way I see it, the other major feature of 3x miles on my gas + restaurants is a perk, since my card is free for at least 2 years. Quite a perk, as both my car and I eat a lot.
  15. Yes. Its great for the backstory and sets the stage nicely for the series. Its also pretty good. However, be aware that a)there are 2 versions and the one you'll probably see is the revised one (which I think is better anyway) & b)the series has a very different cast of characters than "The Gathering" so don't get too attached to any of the characters. I actually liked Babylon 5 more than the Star Trek series.
  16. Of course I gotta add another 2cents here. There are players who I think are the best and there are players that I love watching. Federer is at the top of my list on both. For me, Johnny Mac is much more one of those I love watching, but who I don't think showed as one of the greatest players ever. And Sampras is the opposite for me, although I admit that during his reign I wasn't watching as much tennis, since I was fully engrossed in squash. Lupica's article is nicely written. Thanks.
  17. Sorry you didn’t get to spend more time in Florence but I’m sure that where you stayed was gorgeous. As a side bit of trivia, Figline Valdarno is where Sting has his estate. We met his staff one night at a restaurant in Florence (Cucina del Garga) when we overheard each other talking about the same town - where we had just toured around (our Florence landlord lived there & invited us to dinner) & where they were living.
  18. Just looked at their hours (after your posting). As we leave Brooklyn heading south on a weekday (Jan 2nd) & get to Richmond after 4pm, it does seem unlikely that we're going to get to try this place unless our return trip in late March brings us to Richmond on a weekend. Oh well.
  19. Interesting. I remember having almost this exact conversation with you just before we launched this food board. 😇
  20. It was on our short list of places to try when we passed thru in Jan and in March, but we went elsewhere (see above post for those). We'll probably go this Jan when we pass thru again. Unless, of course, you hate it.
  21. Well, that one I actually knew without even thinking. If you know that Eisenhower was next, there's just no place for a Republican, other than those 4, to have run subsequent to that. Just think: Jeb was very close to making that trivia even more interesting.
