  1. The Going Out Gurus said there are new lunch hours - anyone know what they are? Looks like I might have a fatter Friday than usual...
  2. To me, it sounds like the stereotypical "This place is just SO much better than this other place, and you just don't know it" attitude that people get in various areas. California, Paris, NYC, etc...it's like they have to show off how "wordly" they are by insulting the place that they're in. But I'm with you - good not to have to worry about him or her anymore. I bet local restaurateurs are happy, too.
  3. I keep wanting to go to EatBar more and keep not getting around to it. Fortunately for me last week, celebrating my raise and transfer was a good excuse to take someone (goodeats) who hadn't been there before. So off we went! I did sample her onion rings and enjoyed them. The Chorizo Corn Dog was quite tasty, and a deal at $2.75. I was disappointed I couldn't get a hot dog, but the Cubano sandwich hit the spot just right. Of course, the best part was the fun of hanging out with Gina that night. I haven't had that much Miller High Life in ages! Now to go back to convincing my friends and neighbors we need to go back THIS WEEK! ( )
  4. Straight Campari, straight Aperol, and straight Bernet-Franca after taking miracle fruit tablets...now just drinking more Bell's Two Hearted Ale.
  5. To Gina, whose birthday is today (and I'm not going to be able to make it out to say an official happy birthday to her, boo, I know, I suck).
  6. Fortunately not in the orgy sort of way. But even with the rain the spring one was fun!
  7. That's because I arbitrarily lumped together the listing I put up there. I'm not familiar enough with a lot of those areas to say what exactly goes with who where; for instance, I know Oakland and San Francisco are right next to each other... Well, I do wonder about some of that too. To quote from a friend of mine who works at UGA when I sent him the ones in Georgia: So you have to take it as-is, perhaps, for places you don't know. I'm going to NYC in mid-September and most of the people I'm hanging out with are more beer nuts than cocktail nerds, so I'm using the list as an "idea" place for somewhere to hit (though we'll probably be hitting Pegu Club at least, and I'm pushing for Death & Company, depending on how time works out). (And no - I'm not quite certain why he called me Mike, as he's always known me as SeanMike...only my family usually calls me Mike...)
  8. They haven't put this month's issue online yet. NYC/Brooklyn had a good number, as did Seattle. Lemme see some numbers here... NYC (including Brooklyn): 13 DC (including Alexandria): 6 Baltimore, MD: 2 Charlottesville, VA: 1 Richmond, VA: 1 Athens, GA: 1 Decatur, GA: 1 Atlanta, GA: 1 San Diego, CA: 4 Asheville, NC: 2 Raleigh NC: 1 Boise, ID: 1 Ithaca, NY: 1 Denver, CO: 1 Portland, ME: 2 Portland, OR: 5 Bozeman, MT: 1 Alpine, CA: 1 Santa Rosa, CA: 2 Seattle, WA: 6 Anchorage, AK: 1 Waldoboro, ME: 1 San Francisco, CA: 5 St. Louis, MO: 1 Chicago, IL: 3 San Gabriel, CA: 1 Austin, TX: 1 Pasadena, CA: 1 Albany, NY: 1 St. Paul, MN: 2 Redondo Beach, CA: 1 Manchester, NC: 1 Allston, MA: 1 Kansas City, MO: 1 Champaign, IL: 1 Pittsburgh, PA: 1 Amherst, MA: 1 Philadelphia, PA: 3 Brookline, MA: 1 Oakland, CA: 1 Cambridge, MA: 2 Tampa, FL: 1 Minneapolis, MN: 1 Mobile, AL: 1 Northampton, MA: 1 New Albany, IN: 1 Mount Pleasant, SC: 1 Los Angeles, CA: 1 DeLand, FL: 1 Salt Lake City, UT: 1 Las Vegas, NV: 1 Birmingham, AL: 1 Sioux Falls, SD: 1 Milwaukee, WI: 1 Wasilla, AK: 1 Oklahoma City, OK: 1 Lovell, ME: 1
  9. Two of the big things about Beef O'Brady's from the people I worked with were that you couldn't smoke in there and that it was really quite tiny - the bar area especially. I'm kind of surprised about the brewpub but it'd really gone downhill. When we first moved out to Ashburn (the company, that is, right around the corner from Old Dominion Brewpub) it was a really popular place. Soon, though, people stopped going there. And when they yanked out all the "extra" beers that they used to have on tap there was even less reason to go there. On a different note...anyone see Imbibe's list of 100 best places to drink beer in America? The DC ones listed were: Best Beer Shops: Chevy Chase Wine and Spirits Best International Selection: Birreria Paradiso Best International Selection: Rustico (starred selection) Best Bottle Lists: The Brickskeller (starred selection) Best Belgians: Brasserie Beck Best Gastropubs: Granville Moore's They also had Capital Ale House in Richmond, a couple of places in Baltimore, and a beer shop in Charlottesville...amongst, of course, other places.
  10. I've been thinking a lot about that post today...it's a hard one. Do you go for the best, or do you go for the ones that play the best with others? Do bitters count? Vermouths? Do they have to be in your cabinet now or can you just say "Sure, I'll have a Glenfiddich 50 year old"? But I'd probably say, based off what I've actually got in my cabinet: 1. Willett 6 year old bourbon 2. Plymouth gin 3. Red Hook rye 4. Glenfiddich 15 year old 5. Vya dry vermouth 6. Carpano Antica 7. Creole Shrubb 8. Green Chartreuse 9. Aperol 10. Anchor Genevieve gin
  11. I haven't done any charity work in a while - so I'd like to jump in, too, if there's still space.
  12. Sounds like a rickey! I've been drinking entirely too much Bell's Two Hearted Ale from my kegerator...
  13. I think we can help authenticate the rumor - my brother drove by there yesterday and the women who own Vero (whose name he knows but I'm blanking on) were outside of the old Milan place with power tools working on it.
  14. I have a shipment of "miracle berry" tablets that should arrive today. These are the berries that make sour or bitter things taste sweet. I plan on doing some taste testing on Fernet Branca and Campari after trying one. (and still, I do like Fernet Branca - just not straight. I've been meaning to try it with Coke as per the Argentina episode of Three Sheets...)
  15. I first had Underberg at a German restaurant in NYC, from the little bottles that come a dozen to a tin. I've found it invaluable since then for helping that "bloated" feeling after I've eaten too much. 999, from Lithuania, also helps with that.
  16. Yay! Yay! Yay! Looks like I'm going to play hooky from work long enough to get a bottle this week!
  17. I believe I picked up my bottle at Ace Beverage. It is tasty stuff!
  18. Why do I have a sudden craving for gin shots?
  19. Being from Morgantown - well, as of, uh, almost 20 years ago now - every time I go back I feel obligated to go to the Boston Beanery. It's a very college town. So it kind of depends what part of town you'll be in...
  20. From the name maybe a beer-and-wine bar? That's the first thing I thought when I heard the name, and honestly - it's not that far from my house, so if it can convince me to go that way rather than down to Dogwood or 4 Ps I'd be happy to give it my money. I've never been disappointed by Vero so if they owned it that might be A Good Thing (as long as it didn't drag Vero down...).
  21. No! Don't use cheap gin! Use decent gin! I'd suggest Plymouth meself.
  22. I've said that so many times - and then gone out for wings and beer that evening...(Hey, that's a good idea for this evening! Wings and curry sauce at 4 Ps along with beer and trivia! Tomorrow morning will suck even if I'm not hungover...)
  23. We finally went to Ray's the Steaks on Saturday night. After everything I read about it, after driving down there to get on the list, then the half-hour or so wait, I just kept up the hope that it'd be as great as I'd always heard. Boy howdy was it awesome. Everything was great - from the spiced cashews at the beginning and the bread, to the crab bisque and the scallops, to the various steaks (I had the cajun ribeye), and even the desserts they brought out for Marshall's birthday and the wine. And when you split up everything we had for six people five ways (thanks to a birthday) including 3 bottles of wine it was still a "wow, this was cheap!" night. Which is just GREAT because now I'm going to end up there so much more!
  24. Over the years I've managed to learn how to parcel out my Wheat Thins. Man I love those things. One of my biggest weaknesses is the mee goreng from Cafe Asia. I wouldn't go out of my way for it - but it's right across the street from my office, and lunch is a huge weakness for me. (Thank goodness Ray's Hellburgers isn't open for lunch!) I did really well on my first go-round with Weight Watchers. I lost about 60-some pounds. I've put a bit of that back on, and I'm trying to lose it again, but it's just so hard for me to get any motivation any more - mostly because I just get frustrated with it. That, and I stopped having "the only thing I drink is Miller Lite" and instead keep insisting on drinking "better" stuff. Couple that with a crappier job situation (less time to work out and more "let's go out after work because our souls are rotting at our desks") and it's a bad situation...and let's not get into the kegerator...
  25. This month's Mixology Monday is on "local" cocktails - either a cocktail invented locally or using local ingredients. So over at Scofflaw's Den we'll probably be doing our own rickey variations. I also saw that they posted Kevin's recipe (from Urbana) on the Washington Post site - that was one of my favorites from the rickey competition Monday night so I want to give it a shot making it myself.
