  1. Do you ever end up going somewhere regularly that you don't particularly like for no reason other than it's convenient and the only other choices are worse? "But SeanMike," you say, "you work right near the strip mall heaven with Pho 75, Ray's, Guajillo, etc. How could you ever get tired of that?" Well -- you do. Or rather, I do. And to be honest, when the weather sucks for whatever reason, and I just can't decide on what I want to eat, more times than not I end up over at Cafe Asia. And I always end up with the same thing - pork mee goreng. I mean, it's not bad - after all, I get it regularly - but it's not anywhere near what I'd call good. It's a filling bowl of noodles with a supposedly spicy (occasionally it still is, but most of the time it's bland) sauce, small hunks of occasionally fatty pork, and some cubes of deep fried tofu. The later is best when you get small cubes that are fresh and hot - today I had more than a couple that were too big and a bit cool. The service is very hit or miss. A couple of visits ago I had a killer waitress who never left me hanging for a refill or anything - most of the time it's not so good. And don't take the lemon or lime wedge off your diet soda or you'll get regular. The happy hour is pretty good but gets incredibly packed. If you know the bartender, you'll get great service. If you don't...well...oh well. I can't in good conscience really recommend the place. Thanks to so many people in my offices being hooked on it - and it being the most convenient "big" place to go - we eat there way too much. Still, the service and food ARE better than Piola, but that's like saying licking the concrete on Wilson Boulevard is better than licking the asphalt.
  2. I took two friends from out of town here yesterday. They loved it, though both had also heard that same myth bandied about (I believe from the radio). I hadn't realized that the only side that came with the burger was a wedge of orange, but that was fine - we couldn't eat more than our burgers (and a half-pitcher of root beer for me) anyways. I had the Punisher - very tasty.
  3. We went wine tasting about a year ago to some of those. Chateau O'Brien raised the price of the tasting on us when they realized there were more than a couple of us and the owner did the tasting, spending most of the time talking about how great he is. I won't spell out what we called the winery after we left but I'll never go there again. It was by far the most obnoxious experience I've ever had at a Virginia winery.
  4. At a fantasy draft party one year, a young lady who was from Pittsburgh brought in a pierogi casserole. (We claimed that it proved her Pittsburgh heritage.)
  5. I had a great time there last night and I would only add that Peter Smith was incredibly friendly and cool. Gina, of course, is a killer mixtress, it was great to see Lauren and the other non-working people there last night that I'd met before, and all the new people I met were also quite cool! I felt like I could've hung out there all night - and given how this morning went, almost wish I'd done so!
  6. Their Baltic Porter wasn't TOO bad, but it was kind of "eh". Like "why pay this much for this, when I could get something happier at the same price?" When it was local, I'd be more willing to pay that price...
  7. I went there the other week for the first time, having an egg roll, wonton soup, and kung pao chicken. Very reasonably priced, I'm wondering if I had some kind of a discount in there (I was the only person in there), but it was all rather darn delicious. I'm going to try to hit there again. That beef and hot chili sounds good...
  8. My brother absolutely loves crab rangoons. Anyone have any more up to date recommendations in Arlington area?
  9. Last time I was at Lost Dog I got their new(-ish) Pitbull Pie - salami, ham, pepperoni, onions, and jalapenos with spicy tomato sauce and cheese. Washed down with a draft double IPA it was very tasty.
  10. Entirely too many Bols Genever old fashioned - current favorite is to use some demerara sugar simple syrup plus repeal day bitters. DARN YOU JAKE PARROT for getting me hooked on these!
  11. last night at Central: a Hurricane courtesy of Justin, and then two of the maple manhattans. Yummy. I needed them extra after spending over 90 minutes on Metro to get back to EFC. Grrrr...
  12. I went there a couple of days ago for lunch - one of my Indian coworkers says it's one of only 3 kabob places he'll go to. I had the chicken and the lamb kabobs. Both were very tasty. I got the bread, which was delicious after soaking in the juices from the various meats. I'll definitely be going back for lunch.
  13. Converted? It's not already?! (looks around again)
  14. If you're trying to lure someone into the world of cocktails, there's plenty of choices on this menu. The Whiskey Skin has introduced my brother to Scotch, and the Expat is easily quaffable and very good for a change of pace. The Brunswick Sour shows how a small addition to a drink can completely change it and the Salad Days Sour just makes the place smell good. But if you know you like your drinks strong, I can't resist the Malt & Hops. Every time I order one it's all I can do not to order another...and another...and another...
  15. Well, time to stop drinking beer and switch to rye. Never a bad thing!
  16. Given some of the people "donrockwell" is following (Metrocurean, DCist, Todd Kliman, etc.) I doubt it's a scuba industry guy in Cali.
  17. And Next Door didn't appear to have the "one Urbock per customer" rule. I've never seen Raven on draft before and I am quite excited about that. By Xingo, do they perhaps mean Xingu, the black South American (I believe Brazilian) beer? I've had that at Lost Dog and at the Brickskellar. I could swear that the Teeter near my house has carried it. I know at least 1-2 stores (probably Westover Market and Total Wine) carry it in NoVA.
  18. My brother's fiancee went there today to procure chocolates for their wedding. She loved it, and loved the service she got. The chocolates she brought back - at least, the ones I got to try - were awesome. She's already called dibs on any uneaten ones from the wedding.
  19. I had Urbock 23 last night for the first time. Delicious!
  20. They don't? Because I know I've definitely paid corkage fees to bring my own wine when I lived in Charlottesville. Did it change in the past 4 years?
  21. Recovering (a bit) from too many killer drinks last night at The Gibson. Thus...Old Chub. Mmmmm.
  22. I miss some of their more decent beers they killed when they got bought out... Oh well. I don't miss them THAT much.
  23. They usually use student groups as volunteers but will be soliciting them starting in January. When/if I see something I'll post it, or you can e-mail/PM me with your contact info and I'll pass it on to them in one big list near the end of the year.
