  1. Wow, there's a surprise at the Location of Death. A mediocre restaurant quickly fails. Since the site clearly doesn't work as a restaurant, why don't they just blow the building up and put a bank there. We need more banks around here, right? Rocks, how about a pool on the lifespan of Tap and Vine?
  2. We have enjoyed Blue Iguana over the years but at our last meal there, Thanksgiving '07, it just seemed really tired. The apple cobbler was nothing but canned apple pie filling with some sort of crumbs strewn about. I would hope the place has turned it around, because it's a nice change from all the chains out our way.
  3. For Loudoun Countians, there's also a new market in Ashburn this year. Saturday mornings I think. We haven't tried it yet.
  4. Doesn't disgust me at all. Someone at the Texas State Fair within the past couple of years (the mega state fairs are the breeding grounds for new deep frying techniques) was offering deep fried Coke. As in Coca-Cola. You read that right. He figured out how to fry Coke foam. Makes a monte cristo sound downright gourmet.
  5. I haven't thought about Bennigan's in years. My memory of that chain will be their Monte Cristo (AKA Monte Crisco) sandwich, a great guilty pleasure.
  6. How many thousands of people are going to wait in line for two or more hours for a piece of cheesecake? The mind boggles. Since few if any will just order cheesecake, the "loss" CF suffers on the cheap cheesecake will be more than made back on the other stuff. My personal view of CF is that the food is perfectly adequate, but in no way worth the wait. At my local mall (Fair Oaks), you can get similar food with far less wait at Champps.
  7. N.B. The Original Pancake House in FC is on W. Broad St. There's not many better breakfast values than the breakfast burritos at Anita's. Their coffee is not bad, too.
  8. We've been going to Rosemary's Thyme for many years -- certainly never have had any kind of bizarre experience like this. The food has always been good -- wraps, salads, grilled stuff. Good bread for dipping.
  9. After reading Warren Rojas's glowing writeup of this place in Northern Virginia mag -- Warren generally knows what he's talking about -- I went to the Web site and found it very off-putting, and that's without even noticing the dress tips. I suspect this clown will fall flat on his face.
  10. I'm almost honored to be one of the few people apparently to have actually eaten a Dad's Backyard Burger. What a bizarre saga.
  11. Not just within walking distance, but crawling distance are Argia's (Italian) and Clare and Don's Beach Shack (seafood). Of those two my choice would be Argia's. Still well within walking distance are Ireland's Four P's, Pilin (Thai), Maneki Neko (Japanese), a pho joint (Pho 88, I think). Have fun in FC!
  12. Thanks to hexerei, I rushed right out and over to Linda's. Got a Lindaburger and a side of onion rings. Everything freshly prepared. O-rings a bit watery, perhaps owing to being made with fresh-sliced onions, but the coating was nice and crunchy. The burger lived up to expectations -- the paper sign in the window says "Excellent Burgers." I like these older parts of Arlington, where the streets are lined with these so-called taxpayer strips. Linda's also has an outpost in Sterling, according to the menu, for us Loudounians.
  13. You want hot? Try the tiger skin peppers. Make sure you have a bottle of beer handy. In my experience crispy beef is not what I'd order if I wanted a spicy dish. Please give it another try and let the server (I don't know Melony personally but might as well seek her advice) offer some suggestions. For a few cell-phone photos of a meal my brother and I shared at HKP, go to his entertaining blog, EatWells LiveWells, http://www.eatwellslivewells.com/2007/08/h...-church-va.html
  14. Here are some brief comments on many of the restaurants mentioned in this thread. I've worked in FC for nearly 16 years: Bubba's BBQ: Meh at best. Silver Diner: Pretty dependable. Good milkshakes. Sweetwater: Good safe choice. I'm generally a GAR fan. Grevey's: Not bad, but I'd pick Sweetwater of the two. SOTW: Decent for burgers. Pistone's: I find it rather gross. Pho 75: The Mother Church of DC pho. Still among the better purveyors. Leb Butcher: Good, interesting food, but SLOW! Myanmar: Again, good food (salads especially), but SLOW! Clyde's in Tysons: The worst Clyde's. Punjab Dhaba: Good bare-bones joint, try the goat. Argia's: Very dependable. Sandwiches are good and filling. They make a great Arnold Palmer. Old Hickory Grille: Good food, but it's heavy. You'll need a nap. Victor's: A carnivore's delight. Meat and more meat. Llajtaymanta: Interesting food, but it's pretty challenging. For more accessible Bolivian, try Luzmila's on West Broad St. in FC.
  15. I know where the space Rocks is talking about for the new pizza joint is located. It's not the Broad St. Grill space. Where is Pie-Tanza going in?
  16. This whole fiasco has been very illuminating. All these years I (and probably many other people) was under the impression that the name of the barbecue joint was the Mighty Midget Kitchen. But it turns out that the barbecue operation was in fact called B'z BBQ Co., and will be moving to Paeonian Springs, according to the owner. In other words, the Mighty Midget Kitchen is neither an idea nor a company; it's simply the little building, which will now be leased to Hamburg Doener, a very popular German chain.
  17. Regarding the name, HKP was once a very good Cantonese restaurant. When the Szechuan folks took over, they didn't bother to change the name.
  18. Agreed -- one of the joys of living in Northern Virginia is finding good eateries in all kinds of beaten-down strip malls. This one, for example, has two worthy spots: Caribbean Grill and House of Biryani.
  19. Well, Don, with fried squid you can get either tentacles or c-rings -- your choice
  20. I will second Clyde's. Their fried calamari has always been one of the best items on their menu. Huge portion, crispy, plenty of tentacles, zippy remoulade-ish dipping sauce instead of boring marinara -- what's not to like?
  21. We had a very nice meal at Cafe Panache a few months ago, and out of the blue they just sent us a 20% off coupon, so we plan to go back in the next couple of weeks. It's not gazpacho season, but I suspect they will have something equally delicious.
  22. LOL I just happened upon this hilarious thread and I have to concur with the consensus. There are exactly two places where I have had great monte cristos: The late lamented Great American Melting Pot (AKA Gampy's) in Baltimore, and Bennigan's.
  23. We FINALLY made it to AF this past weekend. And since we had some out of town relatives in tow, we got to try four pies: Med Bread (basic cheese and tomato), Punctuated Equilibrium (see above), Sun-Dried Tomato and Mushroom, and the Meat Special (sausage and ground beef). All were at least very good -- the standouts were the Punctuated Equilibrium, and the Sun-Dried Tomato and Mushroom. The former was a perfect combination of toppings, while the latter was covered with mushrooms -- really too much for the thin crust, but the taste more than made up for the sogginess. Service was also excellent.
  24. Oh man, I'm ready to finally try AF. We're going to be going there next week with the out-of-town guests. Definitely we'll be getting a Punctuated Equilibrium pie. We were actually in the AF plaza this past weekend. We had a nice meal at Callalloo Cuisine (I was pizza'ed out for the week or we would have gone to AF). Not blow your socks off great, but good and fairly priced. We also walked past the Thai place, Anothai. Anyone tried that one?
