  1. You should try the Weenie-Beenie's North Carolina barbecue sandwich. It's a very respectable facsimile of eastern NC barbecue (complete with little packets of Texas Pete hot sauce, which is actually made in Winston-Salem). Here's a nice pic of the W-B: http://www.flickr.com/photos/48600084074@N01/75002206/ and even better, here's the obit for the man behind the Weenie-Beenie. Looks like he was quite a character. http://www.onepocket.org/StatonObituary.htm
  2. Hence the defunctness of the latter. That place didn't take long to go belly-up, did it?
  3. Wow, this is very intriguing news. Chrysalis is one of the best of the Loudoun wineries, which now number at least a dozen. Their Viognier is really good. Nice to see that Hump landed on his feet and not his, uh, hump. We live around 8 miles from Chrysalis. I love to tell people that we live in Virginia wine and horse country. And speaking of Hump, any recent reports from the French Hound, which replaced Aster in Middleburg? It got a very nice review in the WaPo, but then I saw a negative posting about it on another web site -- the poster speculated that perhaps the review had brought too much business for the Hound to handle well. And haven't we heard that before?
  4. As a resident of SoLoCo (I just made that up) -- I'm just happy to have another decent restaurant around here. Now that Twinsmommy and I are finally going to try to get out to eat once in a while, having a closer option for Clyde's calamari is ok by me.
  5. Did you notice those new buildings going up in back of Elevation Burger? My company is moving into one of them in early December. Many of us are already fans of Elevation Burger. They will be getting a noticeable shot in the arm when we move -- as will the nearby Italian Cafe, the German Deli, Super Chicken, Victor's... And also, dear god, Milan Donuts.
  6. We hit the Rehoboth location this past week. Three generations (ages 2 to 79) enjoyed the donuts. I found that one (mocha glaze with chocolate bits) was sufficient, but I could have had my arm twisted to "force" another one down.
  7. Come on, you don't know where Broadlands is? It's just north of Ashburn and Brambleton. Everyone knows where those places are, right? Seriously, this is a good move by Clyde's -- and a natural expansion of their market.
  8. I probably get Taco Bell more than any other fast food but I will not get anything with chicken. It never seems to be fully cooked and having had first-uh, hand experience with campylobacter from touching raw chicken (wanna lose nine pounds in week? it's not pretty) I am not going to take a chance when there is such deliciousness to be found elsewhere on the TB menu.
  9. Even with the bar that low, this place probably won't clear it. The mere thought of any place in the Myrtle Beach area with the word "Calabash" in the name makes me ill.
  10. Shirataki noodles are supposed to be the latest miracle diet food. A guy at Lotte Plaza told me they carry them. Any other sources would be most appreciated.
  11. There's a little banh mi stand inside the mall that is very good and of course dirt cheap. The proprietor is a very nice lady, who might show you a picture of her daughters.
  12. Chutzpah, which has been in Fairfax for probably ten years or so, has opened a branch at Tysons Corner, not too far from Reston. Actually, the original location at Fairfax Towne Center (West Ox Rd at Route 50) might be a little closer.
  13. We haven't tried the Tysons outpost yet, but at the Fairfax location for brunch I always order "The Oops," which is lox eggs and onions mixed with matzo brei. Get the fries instead of the homefries. It also comes with a bagel -- a ton of food. For lunch I usually get a reuben. The sandwiches come with fries, which are surprisingly good. Avoid the chopped liver -- take it from one who used to help Aunt Pearl make chopped liver in her wooden bowl. Among the side dishes, I much prefer the kasha varnishkes (AKA bowties, bowknots (what we used to call them), and of course farfalle) to the kishka. My guess is it's impossible to get good kishka any more.
  14. Sadly, the photo of Chef Astorga's beautiful dish provides substantial insight into why his restaurant failed. Wrong place, right time (and how often do you hear that formulation?).
  15. Well the name is certainly promising (Twinsmommy and I are owned by two petits bassets griffons vendeens, which are indeed French Hounds). I hope they make a go of it -- another failure in what is truly a beautiful building could lead to another "Location of Death" designation.
  16. We got takeout from the Chantilly Minerva last week. I had forgotten that because they specialize in South Indian cuisine, the food is generally spicier than some of the other local Indian joints. That's fine with me but it limits what Twinsmommy can order. I'm tempted to try some lamb vindaloo -- it's gotta be pretty darn hot!
  17. That Applebee's sits on the site of a beloved local hangout called Mountain Jack's. Applebee's truly blows. The classic example of "corporate" running the show.
  18. I tried the avocado at Song Que, and it was as good as I had hoped. Very refreshing on a hot day. Of course, I don't think I've tried a flavor there that I haven't liked.
  19. that's a great idea for a thread. south of virginia, almost no good barbecue joint has either a billboard or a line on a gov't highway sign.
  20. Yeah, both good choices. I've worked in Falls Church (just over the line) for 14 years so I know both of those places well. Caribbean Grill has OUTSTANDING side dishes -- their yuca is superb, and their plantains melt in your mouth. While their chicken is very good, I've often just gotten side dishes for lunch. This was actually my first time trying any of the eateries in Lee-Harrison (other than Dogma for my pups). Pietanza looks interesting too, but also a bit pricy. Then there's Sushi-Zen. Any 411 on either of those? I'm guessing "Oriental Gourmet" is as bad as you'd expect from the name?
  21. After my lunch plans fell through today I decided to finally try this venerable eatery. I walked in around 1:45, the place was deserted. I told the guy I wanted to order some takeout and started perusing the takeout menu. He came over and tried to direct me to the lunch specials. I said "No, I don't want that." Soon he came back over to me and said, "You want to order something else? She [the cook, i guess] can't make anything else now." That leads me to believe they have eight vats, each containing one of the lunch special entrees. Has anyone else ever heard of an asian, or any other kind of, restaurant that serves ONLY its lunch specials during lunch hours? I took a takeout menu but I won't be using it. Sorry Charlie, it's one and done for you. What a bizarre experience. That allowed me to try Taqueria El Poblano: good, but a little pricy for take-out tacos. I'd go back and eat there. I also tried Mother's Macaroons across the street, next to the Secret Safeway. The mocha macaroon was delicious; the orange macaroon didn't have much orange flavor, but was still a good macaroon.
  22. I just saw that they will have a Hot Posts feature. That's always how I have used Chowhound. I did just try the Search feature and it worked well.
  23. Great call on the IC 'za. When I headed downtown for the GMU-UConn tilt I stopped at IC and got two slices of 'shroom 'za. I was able to eat it one-handed while driving because the crust held up so well. Generous on the 'shrooms too. IC also has Martin's chips from York PA and Berger cookies from B'more, both hard to find in this area.
  24. try this: http://www.northernvirginiamag.com/
