  1. I've got 5 tomatoes now, 2 Cherokee purples, an Early Girl, a German Johnson, and I can't remember what the other is. Also have 24 okra plants doing well, and the roma beans (about 14 germinated) will be put into the beds this weekend. Also re-planted the cilantro and it's doing well now, said to hell with the dill, and I've got one hot pepper and a basil that are finally starting to forgive me for planting them out too early.
  2. that the whipped cream is served on the side instead of on top?
  3. hummus stuffed in celery sticks is my go-to quick gluten-free snack offering
  4. Any recommendations for pollo ala brasa places in the general range of Route 50-Columbia Pike out to Annandale? Someplace to eat in, and even a little atmosphere appreciated. Heading out with some friends in a couple of weeks and realized none of us have a go-to for Peruvian style chicken in NoVa. Thanks!
  5. I won't be able to make it Thursday, either. --- Postings about this dinner here.
  6. That's how I got here -- following mentions of the DR name on CH. Just saying
  7. I think most of the folks who post here on DR are not the average American when it comes to eating/cooking, though. At a glance, my typical week's groceries look mostly like a cross between France and Guatemala.
  8. most commercial leases run on a base term with 1, 2 or 3 five-year options of renewal with rent based on a yearly percentage increase (maybe 3%) over the original rent rate. At 20 years, it seems likely that the options had expired and the landlord decided not to renew under the same terms for business reasons. Sounds like Max's was offered a new lease at current market rates and turned it down for business reasons.
  9. No, the parsley and thyme are the survivors! I've got raised beds and thought they would be warm enough. Guess I was wrong! The plants were small, though.
  10. Thanks for the offer. Maybe next time we'll both have something to swap.
  11. I've got mint, chives & oregano (I keep those thugs in pots, not in the garden beds), and the rosemary is shrub-sized. But if you have any sage and/or dill you're willing to part with, they would be most welcome!
  12. I introduce myself and tell the person that I'm a member of the DR board.
  13. Came home after the picnic yesterday and found all my herbs except my parsley and thyme had crapped out on me and the basil is barely hanging on. I don't know if they dried out, or if the squirrels disturbed them too much while they were trying to get their roots set after planting. Will replant, of course, but hate to lose them.
  14. Thanks for the recipe link, Bettyjoan. The jalapeno cheese squares were courtesy of John G. Williams and his wife Monica.
  15. a second request for the buttermilk pie recipe, Bettyjoan! scrumptious! the bo ssam was also kick-ass, as were the ribs. And Matt's guilty pleasure was indulged in by.........well, I'm not naming names, but it was popular.
  16. lots of strawberries this morning at FC but none of them had much scent. Priced at $6/qt pretty much across the board, no bargain for a bland berry. Asparagus is everywhere in the market now, typically $6 bundle (around 1 lb.), but a few stands had them for $4.50. Lots of early onions to be seen as well, running ~$2.50 a bunch. Prices on herbs are coming down. Lots of veggie and herb plants for sale as well. The crepe makers are back, as are several more of the summer vendors.
  17. I got a cooler and I've got a bag of ice, so those are coming. I made the GF lemon bars this evening and they are not up to my standards..... the store is carrying a different variety of GF flour and it didn't perform as I expected. Still edible but I hate when things don't turn out.
  18. I'm going to make the Sicilian cauliflower salad again, along with the gluten-free lemon bars. And if I get a wild hair, who knows, maybe I'll throw something else into the car to bring along. I'm definitely +1, maybe +2.
