  1. I hate football with a passion - but the rest of America does not. Am I right to think that it might be relatively easy to get a table at Rose's during the Super Bowl, as most people will be at home? ETA: Never mind, just realized the Super Bowl is on a Sunday (duh) and they are closed on Sundays.
  2. Just wanted to note for future visitors to this thread- if you will be close to the Julian Alps in Slovenia near the Austrian and Italian borders there is a lot of great food to be found nearby in Kobarid and further south in Istria. See my posts in those threads for details. It's not too far to detour to a not very visited part of the world.
  3. Big pizza fail at Etto last night. My friend and I lucked into two bar seats after being turned away by a long wait at compass rose. The hostess/server was lovely, but my meal was off. We each ordered a cocktail, then my friend ordered pasta and Brussels sprouts, I ordered the Calabria pizza, and we split the farro salad, as I am in a major farro kick Our cocktails took about 20 minutes or more to arrive, even after the server noted the delay several times. Also, it was not a backup at the bar- we saw several other people who arrived much later get cocktails while we waited. It was ridiculous. The drinks arrived about 8 minutes AFTER we got our food, and while there were apologies, I think something should have been comped to make up for the delay -one of the drinks or a dessert (and I am a person who thinks restaurants comp too much, but this was one of the justified times, I believe). My pizza was a real disappointment. I like the whole grain, but somehow the crust was like a wet dishrag. Spongy, soupy, totally flaccid and not good. It had nice black char, but even those parts were still spongy. How do you even accomplish that? The farro salad was fine (I liked the pomelo in it, which offered contrast) but also a bit dull and not better than what I can whip up at home from pantry staples. My friend thought her pasta was fine, but I didn't taste it. We had fun, as we were just wanting to eat before an event at DC9, but I won't be back to Etto for a long time, and there may be a reason it wasn't totally slammed at 8 on a Saturday.
  4. Thanks, before I saw lovehockey's post I went ahead and ordered two bottles of the very good Pisano Tannat from Total Wine in McLean, which I will trek out to to pick up some time early next week. I also saw on MacArthur's site that they have a baja red that I have had before and that is pretty good, so maybe I'll stop there on my way to McLean via Chain Bridge and pick up a bottle too.
  5. Sadly, the party is next Friday, but I will start with a call to MacArthur and Ace Beverage.
  6. Trickling Springs ice cream is also available at Each Peach in Mount Pleasant.
  7. I've been invited to a wine tasting party where we are supposed to bring wines from "unexpected" countries. Since I travel to Latin America a lot, I thought about bringing a red from either Uruguay or Mexico, which would be unexpected as wine countries to someone who does not know the region. But, where in DC can I find a good Uruguayan Tannat or a Baja red? I'd really rather not go to VA if I can avoid it, although I know Total Wine has a Tannat in stock. Anyone? NW preferred....
  8. Sarasota Last night was dinner at Owen's Fish Shack. It was great. Long waits and no reservations but they have a lovely patio out back with a live bluegrass band, fire pits, many mismatched benches, tables, and chairs and a guy grilling oysters. We loved the ambience, it was like being at a really cool friend's backyard party - the oyster guy even gave me a free beer. After an hour and a half, which flew by, we were seated. The food was phenomenal- we shared a delicious fried green tomato salad, and both has grouper with caper butter, grits, and succotash. Wonderful local seafood. We split a key lime bar for dessert which was ok/ I heard that you can ask for smores ingredients and put them in the fire. That would have been fun. Ambience is amazing, the place is an old wooden house.
  9. Ended up coming back towards home and hitting Sakuramen in Adams Morgan. Our desire for hot soup and noodles beat out our desire to have healthy food.
  10. Thanks all, For now we may just take our chances and try to get into the bar at Blacksalt. I didn't think of Black's though, which I have never been to.... interesting option.
  11. Headed to see Into the Woods tomorrow evening, and want to grab dinner for 2 afterwards around 7:30. After a lot of heavy holiday eating, I'm craving somewhere where we can eat on the light side (i.e. no French) so I thought Seafood, but open to other ideas. We will have a car, so anywhere nearish is fine, but I'd rather not venture into VA or downtown, as we live in Mt. Pleasant and it seems out of the way. I immediately thought of Blacksalt, but they are booked on Open Table. Should we try to get in as a walk-in? Try to sit at the bar? Or, other suggestions in the Friendship Heights/Bethesda/Palisades, etc. areas? Thanks!

  13. Did you notice if they had Lomo Saltado on the menu? Peruvian/Chifa foods are among my favorites. So excited to have this open!
  14. Closing. It really sucked, so I am not surprised. I live two blocks away, and would have been a regular if their service and execution had been anything more than horrible. PLEASE, someone, this is an excellent space for a great locally owned restaurant or bakery. PLEASE take it over!
  15. They sell Vigilante at Each Peach in Mt. Pleasant.
  16. They've been in the frozen section of the meat area. Maybe they don't carry them just after thanksgiving. I had to ask the butcher to show me where they were last time.
  17. The Harris Teeter in Adams Morgan has had them from some place that says they are "natural" when I have looked in the past.
  18. New posts page is painfully slow to load. So much so, I have been giving up.
  19. Went for the second time tonight. The curry puffs remain excellent. The spring rolls were disappointing, but the drunken noodles, requested spicy, were delicious.
  20. Everyone I know who has been to Talinn has loved it and it is a quick ferry from Helsinki. In Helsinki, I had a wonderful meal at Spis, and the excellent Chef and Sommelier. A trip out to Suomenalina island is also interesting, as is the Finnish Design Museum. We also had wonderful cocktails at Liberty or Death. ETA: I had 2 full days in Helsinki as a tourist (before working) and that was the right amount.
