  1. Looks like we are sticking with Fedora for Saturday. I'd like to find a good, not super high-end Italian for Friday. Any ideas?
  2. Thanks, that is what I had heard, and I'll stay away from Artisinal. A friend got a reservation at Fedora - worth it? Better than Balthazar?
  3. Hello! I used to be in a long distance relationship and spent every weekend in NYC. I had all my favorite local places (Lucien, Le Tableau (late and lamented), Balthazar for a big night, Schiller's, Clinton St. Baking Co for dinner, Essex, Little Owl, etc.). It's been a while since my NY knowledge has been up to date. Three friends and I are meeting for a weekend of fun, and we have two dinners to do (lunches are taken care of -- Russ and Daughters!) I could use some help on places with similar vibes to the above. Friday night we could go anywhere, but our hotel is near Grand Central. Thoughts? (I know Artisanal is nearby, but heard it went downhill). Saturday we are going out to Marie's Crisis in the Village. Little Owl is booked, I have a back-up reservation at Balthazar, but any other ideas??? Thanks!!
  4. Bistrot du coin is open all weekend. Acre 121 is open tonight
  5. Is anyone else having issues with the view new content button? It used to work fine, and with no changes on my part, now it only shows 1 or two topics.
  6. The Pad Seew is great but you have to ask them to put less sugar than normal. Also the Malaysian noodle dish is satisfying and delicious, with a more savory flavor profile than Thai when you want something different.
  7. One of my best NYE's ever was at Bistrot du Coin, which offered the whole menu, at normal prices, was great for a large group, and which handed out hats and noisemakers just before midnight, when it turned into a massive dance party. The food there is always pretty good (but not amazing), but the ambience, etc really made it great.
  8. "Death of an Urban Legend Gives Birth to a New Taco Haven in DC" by George Gonzalez on dclatina.com I have not been yet, but I have been to the old "restaurant' where you would ring the doorbell and they would throw the key down and it was some of the best Mexican food I have had in the region. This could be a very exciting place if the cooking is at the same level. ETA: I can't find a menu on-line, but the Yelp reviews reference pig's head tacos, huitlacoche, tacos al pastor, and mole tamales.
  9. As of now have reservations for lunch at Husk, and dinner at the Grocery and Two Boroughs Larder. Waitlisted for dinner at Husk and Fig.
  10. Headed to Charleston for the first time Jan 1-4 for some vacation. Based on Tom's article and what I have seen here thinking of trying to get into FIG, The Ordinary, and Husk for our three nights (although the only reservation that is open right now is The Ordinary - I think our hotel may be able to pull some strings). Good choices? Should we make changes?
  11. I don't like shrimp (it's a texture thing), anything anise flavored, and I literally cannot be in the same room as someone eating canned tuna. Also not a fan of most organ meats (with the exception of foie).
  12. I highly recommend Takayama for a night, especially if you can stay at wanosato for a night or two.
  13. Any new recommendations for Munich or Nuremberg, Rotenberg, Bamberg? Getting on the plane now!
  14. The bagel place on P st, across from the Palomar hotel, is pretty good! Bagels, etc. Not amazing, but good enough for someone who grew up with real NY bagels
  15. Any info on waits? I'd like to try to go with 2 friends tomorrow around 8:30. I will go earlier to put our names in. Have the waits been insane??
  16. We've stuck with Blue Apron for a long while now, and I'd say about 50% of the meals are great, another 40% are fine, and 10% are not so good. They do over-rely on catfish, salmon, chicken, and low-ish quality cuts of beef. Almost all recipes also ask for lemons and lemon zest, there was a period with a lot of snap peas, and we seem to be entering a season where every meal needs potatoes. I am starting to get a little sick of the lack of variety. Thinking about trying Purple Carrot, the vegan delivery service that Bittman just joined. I'd like to lose a few pounds and eat more vegetables. This might be a good way.
  17. We give out over 600 pieces in Mt. Pleasant and always run out before the end. It's Halloween central here.
  18. It takes a gallon of water to grow one almond nut. Given the drought in CA almonds are very expensive and not so ecologically sound if you are looking to move from pine nuts due to cost/environmental issues.
  19. Had lunch today. The pork ragu was just ok, and at times unpleasant. While the pasta and tomato sauce were good, the suckling pig in the ragu was not good. The shredded meat was fine, without much pork-y flavor, but there were large (very large) chunks of fat and/or skin that I had to remove in order to eat it. My friend had the tomato soup (which was a very small portion) and the burrata, which was very mealy (as noted in a review above) and not unctuous. Service was strange - overly chummy, with periods of over attentiveness (no you don't have to ask if we need anything to drink on the same trip to the table when you drop off our glasses of wine and the water). At $100 for two starters, a pasta, two glasses of wine, and two weak cappuccinos, including tip, it was a pricey, disappointing lunch.
  20. Ridgefield is my home town! Steve's bagels is pretty good.
  21. Don't know that location, but Pepe's is always worth it
  22. He later corrected himself and said he mis-spoke. He said it is open and that it had changed hands a long time ago, and that was what he meant -- the original home-grown shop had "closed". It was a really poor choice of words.
