  1. Does that go for their root beer as well? I used to look forward to a decent draft root beer when visiting Hard Times, which carries Old Dominion.
  2. Anyone still doing happy hour at FF before El Chalan tonight? Time? If I can get out of work in time, I might swing by.
  3. Just FYI - I made a reservation for 8 people at 7pm tomorrow under the name "Rockwell".
  4. So what happened to Caterina at 2941 - did she move elsewhere?
  5. That was indeed my intent of posting the headcount. And I guess this answers the question as to whether there's something above hammerhead. 1000 posts! Shouldn't you be Sperm Whale or something, now?
  6. This is the list for Thursday 7pm at El Chalan so far. Please post if there are changes or additions, but also feel free to just show up even if you haven't posted! mdt DanielK Scott Johnston DC in DC StephenB shogun ustreetguy sshorter porcupine +1 (maybe) jm chen +1 (maybe)
  7. I'll have to give some more thought to the rest of the year, but after last night, I must add to the list: Hangar Steak - Ray's
  8. Though it would be nice for everyone who is planning on going to post here, so we can get an accurate headcount for when we check in. This is not a terribly large restaurant...
  9. I love Waiter Rant - wish he updated more than twice a week! I find that Bitter Waitress gets repetitive quickly, and they must have my old Apple II running their server, as slow as it responds...
  10. I'll give a more detailed description in the Oriental East topic later, but I think OE falls a bit short of both New Fortune and Hollywood East. Not by a lot, but I definitely prefer NF and HE.
  11. I am not a wine collector, so I have nothing to bring on that front. However, I am more than happy to bring a bottle of single malt for pre- and post-dinner sampling, if a some of you would be so kind as to pour me a glass or three of some vino during dinner. I could bring the other half of the bottle of Ben Nevis 10yr that I had at the picnic. Other bottles I have lying around: Oban 14yr, Dalwhinnie 15yr, Glenmorangie Port Wood 12yr, Macallan Elegancia 12yr, Glen Garioch 15 yr, Balvenie DoubleWood 12yr. I think they're all Highland malts. I only want to bring a single bottle, so if someone has a particular request, speak up...
  12. Jan 8 looks good for me - and I've never been to SF. Why don't we wait until the NoVa comparison is done, and then do a best 2 MoCo vs best 2 NoVa?
  13. It's not like you can't do dim sum with 4... I couldn't do the 11th, and the 18th is only maybe, so I vote for not changing...
  14. Only 4 signed up so far for Oriental East in Silver Spring this Sunday at 1pm: DanielK Porcupine +1 ol_ironstomach We need more lurkers, and more of our regulars (Heather, Dean, you guys in?)
  15. Jean Louis at the Watergate. Only ate there twice - my engagement in 1991, and our 1 year anniversary in 1993. The food was as memorable as the occasion.
  16. Two stars from Tom. To me, it reads more like a 2.5 or 3 star review, as he found very little at fault.
  17. Anybody who wants a ride from Southern MoCo (rockville, potomac, bethesda, chevy chase), drop me a PM. My wife is already the designated driver, so we can take 2-3 more if you don't want to drive...
  18. Works for me. Kids are with me, and possibly the wife, if she gets off work in time. We can be there by 12:30.
  19. El Chalan is at 1924 Eye St. NW. There are some garages in that neighborhood, but not a lot of street parking. Just a few steps from Farragut West. 7pm?
  20. I'm in. Already anticipating that first Pisco Sour...
  21. Speaking as a transplanted Jew from Philly (families from NY several generations), nothing we have can even be used in the same sentence as the 2nd Ave. Deli in Manhattan. That said, the bagels at Bagel City in Rockville are pretty good, and both Celebrity Delly in Potomac and Parkway in Silver Spring are worth going to. And, to keep this on topic, the burgers at American City Diner are ok, and if you do a private party of 15 or more, they'll reserve the patio for you, and you can put the movie of your choice on the TVs in there. The only reason, IMHO, to bother going there.
  22. They don't have to physically deliver the kegs to MoCo, but they do in some sense have to sell the brewed product to the county and buy it back for the taps. When Summit Station (previously Olde Town Tavern) opened, they even had to have a special law passed in Annapolis to allow brewpubs in Gaithersburg. There's a statewide law from the prohibition era that prohibits brewpubs, and the cities in Maryland that have them now have all had to lobby for a bill excepting their town from the law.
  23. Terlingua Red 4-way or Frito Pie. Keep them there beans away from the chili - them's fightin words! (wife is from Texas...) Actually, the wings are quite good, if you get them grilled rather than fried.
  24. Bye bye Blackie's. We won't hardly miss ya... Back when I was an undergrad at GW, this was one of the "destination" restaurants that parents took their little darlings to when they came to visit. I remembered it fondly, until I visited a few years after graduation, when I had gained a greater appreciation for good food. Remember those childhood shows that you remember fondly, until you catch them on Nick at Nite, and the memory is ruined by a godawful piece of dreck? Similar reaction...
