  1. U Street - The Corridor is Cool Again
  2. IMHO the tasting room at Restaurant Eve easily equals the Laboratorio experience, and Maestro & Citronelle for that matter.
  3. Understood, although I would place Komi, Eve and Palena right there with Donna's restaurant which was singled out as an equal example to the high-end hotel restaurants. It also needs to be mentioned that while hotels provide extra capital to pay for a lot more opulence than most independent restaurants can afford, they may also add problems such as union workers and restrictions to what some chefs are allowed to do in their kitchens so it's not always a better situation.
  4. Komi, Palena, Restaurant Eve...
  5. Everything was truly delicious. Thanks to chefs Wabeck (nice meeting you at Taste of the Nation the previous night!) and Slipp for trying out such wonderful dishes on the group. As everyone can see from the excellent photos (as always, Crackers!), each dish was unique and beautiful as well as full of flavor. Loved it all but the QUAIL was particularly amazing with its meatiness and that underlying kick from the chilis. Thanks Jacques for setting this up!
  6. You forgot to mention the eyeballs: A large crowd packed the Marriott ballroom: Someone we all recognize (excellent ribs!): and the Eve table: The MC announced the auctions and the cookoff between Cathal Armstrong and Jeff Gaetjen: 10 ingredients and 20 minutes to cook with judges chosen from the audience. and the cooking begins: 20 minutes later, the tasting: while the chefs were interviewed -- Jeff: Cathal: and the votes are in... Clean sweep for Cathal and Nathan! A very fun evening! Hopefully a lot of money was raised for a truly great cause.
  7. Crackers, this is AWESOME! Thanks for spending the time to summarize the year so perfectly and creating such a wonderful story that shows how interesting, diverse and fun this community really is. Congratulations Don on a very successful first year!
  8. "Lickety-split" lunch at Restaurant Eve, my treat, for anyone who goes out to the farm tomorrow. How's that for a bribe? -Camille
  9. A couple of other photos from the Food & Wine event in NY: Dana Cowin, Cathal and Meshelle: The 'swag bag':
  10. Ok. getting a bit behind in posting about the farm, partly because we've not been out there the past two weekends. HOWEVER, Beau and I will be there this Sunday, 4/9 to help with the following project: THE PLAN: Meet David at the new farm (Trappe) and travel back to the old farm (Hurlock) driving various vehicles including a 24' truck David rented so that we can packup the lab, office and various remaining equipment to remove it from the old farm. This project doesn't require power tools (that we know of), just the packing up of glass jars -- about 5,000 or so -- and other stuff so that they can get the last vestiges of Davoncrest I moved to Davoncrest II (and also stop paying the new landowner rent! -- he's already bulldozed the old wooden farmhouse from the site) Any takers? Please PM if you want to help. We'll supply work gloves, food, beverages (of the non-alchoholic kind ) so no need to bring anything along except clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. Thanks in advance! -Camille
  11. A few photo highlights of last night's Food & Wine "Best New Chef" reception. (sorry for the blurry, ghosted images in some of the pictures. The vodka mojitos I always seemed to have on hand had absolutely nothing to do with the quality (or lack thereof) of these photos, really ) Battery Maritime Building, Manhattan: Drinks and hors d'oeuveres were offered at several restaurant tables which all had their head chefs present: Scott Conant (2005 winner) - L'Impero: Shea Gallante (2005 winner) - Cru: Tom Valenti - Ouest: serving "Moroccan Spiced Salmon": Laurent Tourondel (BLT-everything) was there as well. No photos but he did confirm the upcoming opening of BLT Steak in DC is slated for August/September. And for the main event -- Tom Colicchio (Gramercy Tavern, Craft, Craftsteak, Craftbar... you get the idea) and Katie Lee Joel (aka Mrs. Billy Joel) present the chefs: while Dana Cowin of F&W congratulates the winners: For you "Top Chef" watchers we have Miguel (contestant) and Gail Simmons (F&W editor and judge): Other "TC" contestants -- Cynthia, Lee Anne, Andrea, Stephen -- were roaming around, photoless... And we end with Cathal and a few familiar faces:
  12. From Laurent himself, BLT Steak will be opening at the 16th & I location in August or September. Should be a great addition to DC
  13. Well, let the guessing begin..... From the NY Post: WE HEAR . . . THAT Food & Wine will name David Chang of Momofuko Noodle Bar and Jonathan Benno of Per Se as Best New Chefs at a party tonight at the Battery Maritime Building . . .So now we know of two of the other chefs joining our local mystery chef
  14. I would be the happy person receiving the pork belly to your left. Very good presentation today: crispy skin, moist, almost sweet meat. You could cut it with a sharp wit. It made for a really nice lunch. Also recommended: the creamy nettle soup. A great way to start. -Beau (of Camille-Beau)
  15. Ahhhh, table 103 As for dinner, we had many of the same items so excellently described by ScotteeM. Along with the fois gras, sea bass and venison, one other item worthy of note is the unbelievable Hogshead burger. Apparently all edible parts of the head (keep in mind that not everyone's definition of 'edible' is the same -- this is basically everything but the skull!) are ground into a juicy burger topped with a fried quail egg and served in a toasted brioche bun on a bed of sauteed Savoy cabbage. Really delicious. The John Dory cooked en papillote with very thinly julienned fennel & carrots and a compound butter with several herbs was also one of the highlights. When the packet is opened, the pungent aroma from the variety of vegetables and herbs smells like walking into one of Dave's greenhouses. A tender, buttery and aromatic fish course -- awesome! Creative desserts, outstanding wine pairings (as always) and the new cocktail rounded out yet another excellent dinner. I suppose we'll be back....
  16. Here's a link to the thread for the last Share Our Strength event held in October '05. If this event is similar, then you'll have no problem filling up on the small plates offered by the various restaurants. The lines, when there were any, were short.
  17. Including you! Congratulations on the nominations
  18. In DC, try Whole Foods. In Alexandria, I've gotten amazing pork butt at Balducci's. Just ask the butcher.
