  1. Will he be reviewing restaurants? The article says reporting and writing features.
  2. A beautiful ripe avocado from a friend's tree, sliced and sprinkled with a little kosher salt. Not a Hass - it's globe-shaped & bigger than a softball, with glossy green skin and very sweet flesh.

I was lucky enough to catch Todd's book talk at the Miami Book Fair today, and picked up The Wild Vine. What a fascinating story.
  4. I don't think there's a Silver Diner in Silver Spring. There's a Tastee Diner, which is an institution but not great. The Silver Diner in Rockville was a go-to place for an easy lunch or breakfast with the kids. The one thing I never liked there was the coffee - it was always wretched, no matter how fresh.
  5. I've had two very good work lunches here in the past month. The first time we split two specials, the autumn spinach salad and the wild mushroom pizza, and both were so good that we ordered the same the second time. Great flavor & some char on the pizza crust. Service was great, with both a waiter and the chef/owner serving & checking on us. Plus superb French-pressed coffee. I would come back even if it wasn't two blocks from my office.
  6. homemade chicken soup toast & cheddar cheese sliced honeycrisp apples hot tea
  7. I am going to remember this for when my son gets to be 15 or 16! There seem to be a lot of reasonable, and reasonably good, lunch/brunch buffets, but not so many dinner buffets.
  8. As the parent of two 'tweens, I see lots of AYCE buffets in my future... How about the various Indian restaurants that offer a lunch buffet? Woodlands, Haandi, Ghar-E-Kabab
  9. Both, I think. She is, of course, totally insane in a good way, and lots of the book is hilarious. That said, the recipes are actually pretty good and her style of entertaining suits me more than Martha's.
  10. It was my great good fortune twenty years ago to find an entire set of the Time-Life Foods of the World - including the American regional cookbooks and an all of the spiral-bound companion recipe booklets - at the Goodwill book sale at the old convention center. I didn't have the $100 (!) they were asking for it, so I waited patiently until the last day when everything was half-price. I'm re-reading I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence by Amy Sedaris in preparation for the upcoming holiday season, and have her newest tome, Simple Times: Crafts For Poor People on preorder.
  11. I have the basic white Crate & Barrel for everyday. The oversized restaurant bowls are fantastic.
  12. I would choose the Gibson. More important than the drinks: what will you be wearing?
  13. There was still brown paper over the windows yesterday. It's been "about to open" since at least the end of July. They are taking catering orders - we got lunch for a company a couple of weeks ago.
  14. That would be me. It's a period piece. As always, the food was delicious, and it was great seeing most of you. Thank you for organizing, Leigh.
  15. I am making beans. They will be vegetarian, because I forgot the salt pork both times I went to the store today.
  16. Sadly, it looks like baked beans are not happening this year. I will regroup & figure out something else. PS, I think I RSVP'd for 3. I will be solo.
  17. El Golfo on Flower Avenue in Silver Spring. Very family-friendly, and the owners are very involved in the local community.
  18. I dragged myself out last night to watch a little baseball & have dinner at the bar. The whole bar menu now is more casual. The burger seems to have gone up in price, now $8.99 with no extras, but all sandwiches now come with fries and coleslaw. I tried the pulled pork sandwich, also $8.99. I expected some smoky flavor that wasn't there - the pork is "Carolina style" and heavily dressed with vinegar that killed the red wine I ordered to go with it. I left more than half my glass of wine. Cole slaw was of the creamy, sweet variety. Fries arrived hot, but some of the thicker pieces were slightly undercooked in the middle. On the whole, pretty good but I probably will stick to steak next time.
  19. I am at home with a bad head cold, so I am out. Damn.
  20. Large or small? If they are little you can pickle them whole. Larger ones make great relish and chutney. Let me know and I will post a couple of recipes.
  21. Gotta agree with Waitman. For heaven's sake, does every meal has to be a transporting culinary experience? Frankly, at a place like the Birchmere all I want is a cheeseburger to soak up the drinks. I'll be at Fountains of Wayne on Tuesday 10/5, and promise an exhaustive writeup of the menu items and the wine list.
  22. People who order pork belly and complain about the fat deserve a WTF. It looks like they've changed the presentation since I was there. That looks more gyro-shaped, while mine was stuffed in a long thin pita. My only complaint was that the sandwich suffered structural failure almost immediately after it was picked up. I may have to call another meeting of the Bethesda/Rockville lunch bunch to try it again.
