  1. Whatever you do, don't try to reduce store-bought, canned "stock" in approximation of homemade. It's vile.
  2. Kid with the flu who hadn't felt like eating all day: chicken soup, tuna sandwich, ice water Kid without the flu: leftover pasta with olive oil & parm, Italian sausage, sauteed red pepper & onions, grape tomatoes, glass of milk Mom: uhhhh, forgot to eat No wonder I'm sitting here feeling hungry.
  3. Cheeseburgers on challah rolls with Cabot clothbound cheddar and A-1 sauce. Butter lettuce, sliced cucumbers, with lemon dressing Haagen Daz Bananas Foster ice cream.
  4. (The Google couldn't find an individual thread about this place, just a couple of posts in Dining In Bethesda) I've only been to Bistro LaZeez for lunch, and found the food pretty good, with a couple of exceptions. The chicken sandwiches can be a little dry, so ask for extra sauce. Their felafel sandwich is my favorite: cruchy felafel with plenty of tahini, and lots of delicious slices of pickled turnip. Mazzas have been tasty, but IMO the hummus is better at Lebanese Taverna so get the Baba Ghanouj instead. Lentil soup was disappointing, consisting of just a few lentils floating in a thin, sour broth. Grilled chicken is very tasty. It's a cute little place, service is pleasant, and the owner is very nice.
  5. Opening another location in Bethesda, next door to Burger Joint. MoCo license application is on the door.
  6. It's all sucrose to me. Beet sugar has been produced for at least a couple of hundred years. Cane sugar production has more than caused its share of grief over that time.
  7. I've been buying the throwback Dr Pepper in Miami for over a year now, and there is absolutely a taste difference. I would love to find it in DC.
  8. Baked garnet yams with butter & maple syrup Ordered-in Pad Thai & green papaya salad sugar cookies & hot tea
  9. I made my first visit on Wednesday night with a friend & we had a great time snacking and catching up. We shared the rillettes and a crudo appetizer, then I had a pear & goat cheese salad and the Cuban sandwich while my friend chose the duck proscuitto salad and the spatzle. Everything was good to very good, and it's a great space to wind down and have a glass of wine after work. I'll be back soon - possibly even tonight. The best surprise of the night was recognizing Raina (formerly of Vidalia) tending bar. She and Harper are back in town, and it was delightful to chat and get caught up on them and hear that Harper is working with RJ on Rogue 24.
  10. A great seafood option a block from my office is a very good thing. Do you have an approximate opening day? If there's a properly made clam roll on the menu then I will be there once a week, at least.
  11. Windows are papered over. I wonder what will replace it? It's such a weird location
  12. Prosaic, but both kids had big second helpings of everything: Kielbasa barbecue beans pan-roasted corn (frozen) rye bread & butter milk
  13. Apparently, I have killed enough brain cells in the past 18 months that I completely forgot this experience. Not only did I try California Tortilla again, but I ordered the same tasteless craptastic burrito - right down to forgetting to ask for no rice. This is not good tasting food. ETA: even weirder, I got chips & queso on the side, and some of the tortilla chips had sugar instead of salt on them. Ew.
  14. Mrs. B & I made a very bad decision yesterday to be lazy and have brunch at Clyde's before shopping at Mazza Gallerie because, y'know, it's usually acceptable, it's close to the shops,we didn't feel like driving too far...feh. Food was marginal. We split the corn dumplings, which are essentially hush puppies with cheese and ham inside. They were crunchy but underseasoned. A little Tabasco helped. I chose Eggs Maryland and they were bland, with mushy crabcakes & breakfast potatoes that had obviously been cooked sometime last week and reheated. Stephanie got a bowl of chili that tasted like one of the first two ingredients was sugar. I might have overlooked the mediocre food if my drink had been acceptable, but my bloody mary arrived with a half-inch of acrid black pepper in the bottom and tasted like the bartender dumped the dregs of the mix pitcher in my glass & topped it with a little vodka. Service was slow & very inattentive. I like a leisurely meal, but a line is crossed when I have to contemplate wandering the dining room to find my waiter. Lunch was at least 30-45 minutes longer than it needed to be because he kept disappearing. The process of sending my drink back and getting a fresh one took at least 20 minutes, getting and paying the check another 10-15, etc. If I ever find myself back there I will stick to cheeseburgers & martinis. ETA: we left a lot of our food untouched and I had about two sips of my remade drink because I didn't feel like staying another 30 minutes to finish it, so it was a waste of money as well as time
  15. This. I've worked in customer service for a long time. Blowing off steam to coworkers is one thing. Making videos explicitly mocking people who come to your business and spend their money, and then putting them on the internet so that other people can laugh at them strikes me as a really bad idea.
  16. Bami Goreng, AKA Javanese Bami. It made great lunch leftovers, too.
  17. Thanks for bringing that up. The thread title made me do a double-take. "jazz-taraunt?" This concept sounds like a theme-park, no doubt bowdlerized version of New Orleans musical culture that will be knee-deep in frat boys & the blondes who love them. But, as always, I will be happy to be proven wrong here.
  18. I'm afraid I'm going to hurt myself rolling my eyes at that one. Yes, Vietnamese food with French influences is so cutting edge. I'm enjoying the All We Can Eat blog, with the exception of the Lunchroom Chatter - but that's only because I'd rather see more of Tim's writing than curated links. I guess that's the nature of the biz these days.
  19. I was debating whether to stop in last night after my errands, but a parking space in front of the door & a single seat left at the bar were signs that it was meant to be. My half chopped salad needed salt & a squeeze of lemon to wake it up but was OK after those additions. My self-created pizza (spicy sausage, smoked gouda, wild mushrooms) was a flop, but I will take part of the blame for that. My topping choices didn't work with the assertive tomato sauce, and the gouda was added to an already generous topping of mozzerella. Crust had a faint ring of char around half the outside, and was floppy in the middle, probably because of the topping overload. Next time I would ask for no sauce, less cheese, and an extra 30 seconds in the oven. I had a glass of Vitiano (cab/sangiovese/merlot) with the pizza & it was fine. The bar was slammed, but I had great service from my bartender, Jamie. I'd go back if I find myself near Congressional Plaza again.
  20. I'm enjoying this year's edition, particularly the "Chefs Tell All" section. Wicked!
