  1. The cheeseburger I had today was probably the best burger I have eaten in the last 5 years. Cooked a perfect medium (I like the fat melted in my ground meat), great beefy flavor & crust from the grill. Even the tomato on it was outstanding.
  2. I used the need to go to Barnes & Noble at lunch as an excuse to get carryout from Taylor. I chose the 9th Street Italian, no onions, add hot peppers. Wow. I am going to dabble in heresy here and state that I liked it better than a similar sandwich from the Italian Store. Liked the selection of Herr's potato chips, and the Boylan fountain sodas, too. I have the other half in the fridge for tomorrow.
  3. I had no idea that Firehook made a "Cuban" loaf. I was planning to see what the Bestway here in TkPk could do for me. Kibbe Nayee, Mrs. B makes a damned fine version of that. It can be done at home. The key is buttering the outside and pressing it.
  4. Can you get the right bread in your 'hood? This might be my quest for the day.
  5. And my day just went to hell in a handbasket. Sorry, but I can't make it today.
  6. 12:30 is fine for me too. Mussel Bar would be good, but like Dan I would be up for anything.
  7. Thank you, Mr Kuller, for checking to make sure the phones were working correctly & sending me a PM. I was able to get through finally and made a reservation. Looking forward to dinner tonight.
  8. I've been trying for a couple of days to make a reservation and feel like I'm trapped in the movie Groundhog Day. I dial, and get a recording saying to press 2 to make a reservation or speak to someone. I press 2, it rings a few times, then I get the same recording asking me to press 2. I tried Open Table, but it won't accept a reservation for 6 people after 6 PM, which is when it says larger parties can make reservations. I get a message saying that reservation is over the limit for Open Table, and to call the restaurant. I'm on the verge of calling my friends and going somewhere else.
  9. I'll be there at the end of September for a few days. I'll report back. I want to find the El Floridano truck and give it a try. The website is just a starter page, but it looks like the Twitter feed is updated regularly.
  10. I just looked at my calendar, and miracle of miracles, there are no meetings! So Friday is good for me too. Anyone else? Scott?
  11. Hey Bethesda lunchers - any interest in getting together late this week, or early next week?
  12. This is news! Chris, can you post a link to his Twitter & Facebook accounts? Don, a Cuban sandwich with cornichons? This made me really hungry.
  13. I wind up with something from Cafe X-Press at least once a week, and so far everything has been mediocre to bad. Low-quality deli meat, flabby bagels, stale egg and tuna salad, and wilted slimy vegetables in the pre-made salads just to name a few disappointments. Their prices are very high for what they offer, also.
  14. That wasn't lunch, it was dinner. I felt I needed something with more nutrients.
  15. Jif crunchy peanut butter and Marshmallow Fluff on whole wheat bread, with a glass of milk.
  16. It's not one of my favorites either, so the reason you state above.. I prefer a lower proof that lets me appreciate the botanicals without setting my throat on fire.
  17. I had dinner here Saturday night with Malawry. There was no wait at 5:30 & they seated me immediately even though she wasn't there yet. Overall we liked our meal: half dozen "West coast" oysters, traditional mussels, pork belly sandwich. I had a glass of rose (Corbieres, IIRC) & she the Cremant d'Alsace. I had a few quibbles, of course. The vanilla sweet potato fries were too sweet for me, and the pork belly needed a sturdier underpinning than the flimsy pita, but the oysters were fresh, the mussels were excellent, and the fries were crispy and not too short. There was a buzz, but we were able to hold a conversation without hollering across the table. I'll return to try some of the other mussel variations, like the curry.
  18. I had dinner at Mussel Bar last night, and saw where it was. There were service people in for training - a good sign.
  19. Any interest in a cookbook swap? I have about 50 that need new homes.
  20. Now all I have to do is figure where the American Tap Room is. I think this should be a Rockville/Bethesda lunch bunch outing.
  21. That was a club, not a bar. That was my second home for years. I still miss it. I still miss the pre-television Fox & Hounds. It was like drinking in someone's basement rec room, except with the greatest jukebox ever. Double gin & tonic, and a turkey club sandwich from Trio's....
  22. I am still trying to work out whether I can make it. If I can, I'll bring baked beans.
  23. The centerpiece of tonight's dinner was supposed to be the baby squash I bought at the farmer's market on Saturday, sauteed in olive oil with garlic and sprinkled with fresh basil. Unfortunately, these were the bitterest little gourds I have ever tasted, even more bitter than I am for paying $4 for them. We had baby carrots with our cheeseburgers instead.
