  1. How does #18 Mon Ami Gabi qualify as independent? There's one right in Bethesda. I thought maybe it was different from the Vegas one, but when I clicked on the link on the list, one of the first things I noticed on their site was "locations". Also, while some of the celeb chef fronted restaurants are not chains per se, I don't know if its fiar to include them.
  2. Friday night on the late side at Dino. Chris took care of us with wine suggestions and we had a few small plates - a great salad of raw porcinis (the Ragusano (?) went great with them) with just the right amount of salt, the proscuitto, the meatballs and the flavorful grilled veggies. Hi Dean! This is Courtney, my boyfriend Chuck and I enjoyed meeting you and chatting with you a bit before you headed home for the night.
  3. All that craziness at the end was made crazier by "creative" editing I think. The scenes where Dale was yelling at Lisa cutting to the scenes of Jen clapping and then kicking a chair over just didn't make sense or seem to follow from each other. Yea, Spike came off badly in this episode... and Antonia was right, she did offer to make the soup if the 2 of them were really into it.
  4. Our dinner there on Sunday was good - as appetizers we ordered the crabcake and the mushrooms. The mushrooms were as good as I remembered them from my first time and the manchego cheese went well with them. The crabcake was alright in terms of being almost no filler and almost all lump crabmeat. However, i did get a piece where the pastry/phyllo dough (whatever it was) had doubled or tripled up on the bottom and hardened to the point of being inedible. As entrees, our friends ordered the surf and turf and the salad with blackened salmon, I didn't try them, but they both enjoyed them. I got the Creme steak and my boyfriend ordered the meat and potatoes americana (short rib) which I'd had my first time at Creme. My steak was ok, a little over seasoned and salty though. The "fat fries" were huge wedge shaped ones - only alright, but I tend to be a thinner fry lover. I much preferred the meat and potatoes americana - the short rib was very good and tender. All in all, a pretty good meal.
  5. I thought for sure that Ryan and Mark were doomed (the movie discussion between them was pure comedy) but it managed to work - I'm sure due to Mark. Zoi was really obnoxious this past episode! All that stuff about "if that's what they want then see ya"
  6. Oh this episode had me howling.. they've really upped the camp factor this season, huh? The opening where the contestants are all miniature - haha! Ramsey in "disguise".... Anyway, dude with the above referenced exotic tartare - Ramsey's reaction was priceless.. and everytime they cut to this guy it looks like he's taking a severely painful dump. That Jason guy is a lazy jerk - "the only thing I'm losing at to a woman is an ironing contest" ?!? I wonder if he was seriously outside smoking and picking his feet or if that was creative editing.
  7. Has anyone been lately? I've only been once before maybe almost a year ago and had the meat and potatoes americana and thought it was very good. So was the musroom appetizer. We're going with friends on Sunday - just wondered if anyone's had any recent experiences there...
  8. No spoilers - just what someone on the show is up to now. Don't look at the link if you think this has the potential to be a spoiler.
  9. Am I the only one still watching? I think it was a good thing they got rid of Erik before he had to plate another dish.
  10. I think his choice of shoes (and no socks) and rolling of jeans in his bio pic are odd But better perhaps than Richard's pink crocs.
  11. He's from New Zealand. Looks like this season will be entertaining! When I heard the judges comments about Nimma's oversalted shrimp I knew she'd be a goner.
  12. Saturday lunch - Ching Ching Cha teahouse in Gtown - salmon miso tea meal - comes with rice and a choice of 3 different vegetables (kale, snow peas, cabbage or squash) - very good! One of the places we keep returning to. Saturday dinner - late at Bar Pilar - calamari (grilled, not battered and fried) with a great tomato sauce, arugula salad, mussels with arugula puree, suckling pig with bean puree (I could have done w/o this one) - and too many glasses of Cava. Sunday lunch - A&Js - scallion pancake, fried chicken, cucumber salad with garlic hot sauce, and jiao zi. Love this place - and so cheap too. Sunday dinner - Comet - very oval pizza with red sauce, greens, olives and smokey mushrooms - good if a tad salty (prob just the olives).
  13. Not sure if this counts - but we were in NY this weekend. Lunch at Momofuku - pork belly buns, veal sweetbreads, and the Momofuku ramen (more pork belly, shredded pork, collard greens, top with a poached egg) - all totally excellent. Very good deal for the quality of food. Also dinner at Bon Chon for Korean friend chicken - crispy even with the soy garlic glaze slathered on it. So good. Pinkberry for dessert - blakcberries, mango and mochi topping - when are they opening in DC??
  14. Hmm I'm not sure. Maybe so, because he was specifically referring to whether she could cook or not? and professional mashed potatoes are better than triscits and cheese whiz a la Sandra Lee??
  15. I think what he meant was that he couldn't believe she was still on the Food Network because he thinks that they are taking everyone who can actually cook and putting them out to pasture, so to speak. He mentioned that a little bit too, how slowly, one by one the network was taking them and storing them away or something. So, he was being positive, about Ina's cooking ability at least.
  16. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought he said he didn't make it to Ben's Chili Bowl on this visit, but that he liked it. Haha the "gateway protein" thing re bacon was funny too
  17. I was at the talk last night as well - it was great! Very entertaining... As others have mentioned he did his usual vegetarian and Food network bashing - although he admitted that (despite being a bobblehead) Giada can cook and (despite not wanting to spend the wkd at her house) so can Ina Garten. Goldenticket - I'm glad someone else noticed that!!! The look on her face was priceless!! Also, in the row in front of me, a lady had brought along her son - I'd put him at about 7 - wonder what she was thinking!
