  2. I wonder if the obsession with chasing and catering to Parker's 100 points will be beneficial to VA wine makers? Since none of them are getting cover stories in the wine mags, and since Parker is not scoring them, they're free to make the kind of wine they want to. Maybe in a few year when/if the tide turns, VA wines will be way out in front (in getting back to the way things used to be)?
  3. Somebody asked Todd Kliman about it in his chat this week and I love his response: APPS SELLING RESERVATIONS ...: On a similar note: what do you think about all these new apps "selling" reservations to places that don't take reservations? As a diner, I am completely against it. If they get in line an hour before and can get paid to do that how am I going to get in? Will it be like the concerts and sporting events for which the tickets sell out in a minute and sold online and double/triple the price?? How do we stop this? Todd Kliman: As for apps selling reservations to places that don't take them "” it sickens me. Whenever people set out to game something, it sickens me. Ticket brokers sicken me. People flipping homes sicken me. They sicken me because they reinforce the idea that life is a scrum, and that if you aren't ruthless and thinking constantly about money and positioning you're done for, screwed. Game over. I've heard and read the arguments that compare it to games and shows. It's sad that restaurants are going in that direction. "Dynamic pricing" "” where's George Carlin when we need him? "” is going to be more and more with us, I'm afraid, at the buzzy restaurants. Already many of the best restaurants in the country are working to distinguish themselves from the merely very good restaurants. They're issuing contracts and taking credit cards in advance. They're styling themselves as speakeasies, so that you have to be in the know in order to eat there. They're situating themselves as restaurants within a restaurant "” in this way signaling to the diner that this is a more rarefied, more exclusive "experience." This is the culture now. And just wait five, ten years. It's nothing to do with the food, you know. Nothing. It's everything to do with celebrity, with show, with a sense that a restaurant is a place where things happen.
  4. For a "very Portland-ie" breakfast, try the Tin Shed at 1438 NE Alberta St. It's one of those places where you want to try every single dish on the menu, and each one is very difffernt from the next. They also have a menu for dogs! (Dogs eat free on Tuesdays!)
  5. Wow! That's a bummer. Not that I ever shopped there much (too expensive for my blood) but I liked the option for high end meat or weird stuff like a tub of duck fat. It was also a cool place to pop in for a glass of wine....sort of an under the radar wine bar. Maybe Society Fair did them in? (that's another place that is way to rich for my blood)
  6. Not sure. I didn't see it mentioned when I skimmed the article.
  7. I didn't see it until now. Had I seen it earlier I might have applied for the job if: a) The kids didn't have something to do that required me to be there [they did] b My wife didn't have any conflicts [she did] c) Neither of us were too tired or worn out by thursday night [my wife has had a very rough week at work, so that would have killed it] d) We could have gotten there on time [i'm usually done with work around 5, but my wife is more like 6:15, 6:30, 7:00, so that would have probably killed it] e) I'm not quite sure what a "media event" is but to my untrained ear, it doesn't sound like my cup of tea. I conjure up images of "get a free vacation if you listen to our 4 hour real estate pitch" events. Lots of competing interests, already scheduled events, and general tiredness
  8. There was just an article in the Mt Vernon Gazette about the new meals tax they're talking about doing in Fairfax County. This table was included:
  9. Do you know about the "GardenWeb" site? They have different forums for every type of plant under the sun. Here's the link to the vegetable gardening section: http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/cornucop/ There are a ton of real pros over there. Post a photo and someone will ID your problem in no time.
  10. I'm going to a general admission show at the Lincoln Theater tonight and would like to grab some food beforehand. The doors open at 6:30, but I was thinking of going in at 7:00 or so (the point is, it's GA so I can't just waltz in at showtime and get a good seat). Any ideas for a good meal, that's kind of quick in that area? I know there are a ton of options, but I won't have time for a 90 minute wait for a table!! Thanks!
  11. According to Virginiawine.org, there are now 249 vineyards in VA!!!!
  12. I'm surprised this is the only Linden Vineyards thread (that I could find, anyway). There's an article in todays WaPost about "6 Linden Wines to Try": http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/food/six-linden-vineyards-wines-to-try/2014/06/05/bdb14152-ea82-11e3-b98c-72cef4a00499_story.html Featured: Linden Vineyards Hardscrabble 2009 ★ ★ ★ Virginia, $50 Linden Vineyards Hardscrabble Chardonnay 2011 ★ ★ ★ Virginia, $35 Linden Vineyards Petit Verdot 2010 ★ ★ ★ Virginia, $28 Linden Vineyards Boisseau Chardonnay 2011 ★ ★ 1/ 2 Virginia, $28 Linden Vineyards Avenius Sauvignon Blanc 2012 ★ ★ 1/ 2 Virginia, $24 Linden Vineyards Claret 2011 ★ ★ Virginia, $24
  13. Thank you! for doing this. I should have thanked you in the first post. Here's another for Front Royal: Apartment 2G - it's owned by the people, and directly upstairs from Element. Husband and wife team who both used to work at the Inn at Little Washington. They have kind of a weird schedule. They're only open on Saturday nights for a 5 course prix-fixe meal which is a bargin at 50 bucks. The only other time they're open is the third thursday of the month for tapas night. I've done the saturday night meal a handful of time and have always loved it, but never the tapas. They feature a bunch of VA wines at prices only a dollar or two more than what you can get them for at the vineyards. Tom S reviewed them a few years back.
  14. I look at Rose's rooftop policy as extension of their no reservations policy and along the lines of Ian Boden's post above (#71). It's just cheaper and easier for the restarurant. Instead of having to keep track or 8 or 10 reservations per night, they only have to keep track of 1. (which is a 100% or 1000% or 100000000% increase from what they were doing before!) It's not like they're trying for exclusivity or to go the "club route", they're just trying to minimize the effort they have to expend in filling seats. At least that's my uninformed opinion of what's happening
  15. Huh? Please point to statements that show a "lack of thought to older people" or that "make you ashamed of this website". I just re-read the whole thread and found no evidence of either. And where is anyone "advocating that elders should not go out to dinner"? (I won't even address the silliness of of the "lock them up" comment).
  16. Thanks for the tip! A Del Ray buddy of mine recommended the GreenStreet Garden Center at 1721 West Braddock Rd, Alex, VA (near Route 7 and Quaker Lane) and I swung by there today at lunch. They had a ton of stuff still left including 5 or so different eggplant varieties, 10 or so peppers, 20 or so tomatoes, herbs, etc. For most of these items they sold them in the 4-packs and well as in bigger one-plant-per-pot pots. Good prices too!
  17. Does anyone know of any garden centers that sell vegetables in 4 or 6 cell packs? It used to be you could get a 4 pack or 6 pack of peppers or eggplants or tomatoes, etc for 3 or 4 bucks, but now the only things I can find are 1 plant per pot at 3 or 4 bucks per plant. I checked at Lowes, Home Depot and (gasp) Walmart today and all of them only sold individual plants. My local garden center (non-chain) also only carries plants as singles. Are there any old timey places out there that still sell the multi-packs? Thanks!
  18. Here's a photo from RdV twitter account yesterday. What's the idea behind 18L bottles? Some sort of an aging thing?
  19. I was just going to post this. If anyone wants to organize a group dinner on the roof, I'm in for two people (weekday only though)
