  1. My pork shoulder sandwich was a little on the subpar side today. I kept biting into little pieces of gristle and I had a little pile of them on my foil at the end. I'm sure that if I had been one person sooner or later in the line that my sandwich would have been just fine. I happened along just as Chef Donna was slicing into the part where the gristle was hiding. cjsadler appeared to enjoy his meatball sandwich though. Where in the heck was everyone else?
  2. Actually, I think it is the other way around. The tax in VA is double that of DC. The prices on liquor in DC are much lower than they are at the VaABC stores. In the hey day of Central Liquors, the VA revenoors used to stake out the parking lot and watch for cars with VA plates loading up. They would follow the car across the river and stop them once they were in VA. DC sued VA in federal court and got an injunction against VA stopping the practice. Unless of course, your comment is limited to wine. In that case, VA might have a lower tax than DC, but I don't think it is double.
  3. I used to work with a fellow who is now a member of the MD legislature, representing Mont. County. I'd be happy to arrange a meeting with him for those of you in MD. Perhaps you could get him to introduce a bill repealing the MD restriction.
  4. I would think that "wine states" would vote against authorizing discriminatory treatment against out of state wineries. Right now, Congress has a lot on its plate and I don't see this coming up anytime soon. In the Senate, it likley would go before the Commerce Committee which has several members from "wine states." I don't see such a bill making it out of committee in the Senate. In the House, probably the Judiciary Committee which has 7 members from CA alone.
  5. I can't make it today, perhaps tomorrow. Anyone else?
  6. And I will point out the obvious: The regulations also prohibit cans or bottles unless they contain water, juice or soft drinks. I suggest that everyone bring an adequate supply of dixie cups - just PM me if you have any questions about anything. Signed, The Lawyer
  7. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I have been doing some looking into the regulatory environment surrounding Montrose Park. There is a very clear prohibition on "amplified music." It would be best if we didn't do anything disrespectful of park regulations. So the advice is: please leave the amplified music devices at home. If anyone wants more exposition on this, feel free to PM me.
  8. The Commerce Clause gives to Congress the exclusive power to regulate interstate commence. What we have here is the states enacting laws that discriminate against out of state goods. Those laws are unconstututional because they are not authorized by Congress. It is not a matter of amending the Constitution, it is a matter of Congress exercising the power given it by the Commerce Clause. All those statutes that were enacted by Congress prior to prohibition are exercises of Commerce Clause power. Congress could wave its legislative magic wand and authorize the sort of discrimination that the Court found unconstitutional.
  9. Kick butt, don't bother wasting your time taking names.
  10. The decision only applies directly to New York and Michigan. I suspect that there will be lots of cases bubbling up with regard to the laws of ther other states that ban direct shipment of wine by out of state wineries. State legislatures also will be looking at their laws in light of this decision. They could do one of three things: (1) repeal their existing law, (2) ban direct shipment of wine by all wineries, not just the out of state ones, (3) nothing (leave it up to the courts to stike down their law). One big winner will be the lawyers, what a litigation bonanza. edited to add: Oh, and Congress could enact a statute that permits state laws that allow direct shipments of wine by in-state wineries and ban such shipments by out of state wineries. But I think the chances of that are low. Are there any wineries in Maryland?
  11. Are there any restrictions on the consumption of beverages that are not non-alcoholic at this venue?
  12. There is a range of bivalves from oysters, to clams mussels to scallops. Might I suggest that you work your way up to oysters by starting with the scallops at Ray's or Corduroy. Or perhaps the mussels at Eve.
  13. Well, I succumbed to the pressure last night and ordered both the Palena hot dog and cheeseburger. I have to agree with the comments up-thread about the salt issue. The hot dog was so salty I could barely eat it. I don't know if the salt was in the hot dog itself or in the sauerkraut, but regardless, there was too much of it. The cheeseburger was fine but I don't see what all the fuss is about. I'll not order the hot dog again and I plan on going back to my prior sentiment that if I'm going to dine at an establishment of the caliber of Palena, I'm not going to have a hamburger and french fries. There is too much other innovative stuff on that menu.
  14. I'm no expert, but I would guess that the "season" in this part of the country is over.
  15. Nadya and johnb and I were in the back room. Nadya said she saw you stick your head in. Long line today. Massive pork shoulder (yawn) sandwich today.
  16. Depends on Grill schedule for next week. edited to add: Crap, it's raining outside. Bring paper towels to wipe the rain off of the seats.
  17. I think I'm going to stop by Firefly on the way home from work for a glass of wine and a plate of fried oysters. Anyone care to join me?
  18. It appears that Tuesdays are bad for a bunch of people. Perhaps a poll as to which day of the week people would prefer is in order? Or perhaps instead of doing it on Tuesdays or always on a particular day, rotate among different days of the week so that more people can participate.
