  1. I would second this suggestion and I'm surprised that I didn't think of it myself. It's kind of hard to find, across the street from the strip mall with the big Giant. Next to the carpet and mattress places. Viennese I think. Good carryout stuff as well.
  2. Shopper's Food has Muir Glen tomotoes. They are not in the regular canned tomato section, they are in what I will descibe as the "international asile." There is a section with organic stuff and that is where they keep the Muir Glen tomato products. Probably cheaper than Whole Paycheck. edited to add: I'd be intersted in what Mrs. B thinks about this subject.
  3. You might give Tempo a try. It has been around a long time and seems to be a neighborhood favorite. I ate there once many years ago and have no recollection of what I had or whether it was any good.
  4. I have found many brands of San Marzano "style" tomatoes, but the DOP one's I found the other day at Wegman's were as close to "real" San Marzanos as I have seen. I'm still not satisfied that they are the real McCoy. The one's at the Italian Store on Spout Run are San Marzano "style" not DOP.
  5. Where do you get your's, if anywhere. I'm so jaded by all of the EU confusion over what constitutes an authentic San Marzano canned tomato that I'm disinclined to believe just about everything. I bought some Flora brand canned tomatoss yesterday at Wegmans. The can says "San Marzano Tomates of Sarnese-Nocerino Area." Imported Authentic Tomato. D.O.P. The designation "of Sarnese-Nocerion Area" has me totally confused. They cost $2.99 for a 28 oz. can. But the question lingers: did I get bona fide San Marzano tomatoes? There are at least 3 seals on the back side and numbers. At this point, I think it's all bullshit myself.
  6. Kudos to Todd Kliman. We need to work on getting Don Rockwell nominated for next year. Or would they look down their collective noses at a ventworm?
  7. The reason Restaurant Depot only sells to other businesses and tax exempt organizations is because they probably do not charge sales tax and therefore can't sell to consumers. Business purchasers are entitled either to a "sale for resale" exemption or they self asses use tax. Erin, have you tried to buy anything there?
  8. I think Shelly's Back Room has the best chicken wings in town. Stretch will back me up on this. edited to add: And the burgers ain't so bad either.
  9. I think I just upgraded to "grouper" level. When can I graduate to "brass" level? edited to add: And what do I get for this acheivement, my avatar no longer works. edited again to further add: Hmm. Very interesting. Avatar is now working.
  10. Species Canine seems to be the official animal of Alexandria. The Holiday Inn on King Street has a doggy happy hour once a week in their court yard and they roll out a big cart of dog biscuits and bowls of water. They also have a bar set up so you can get a beer and they have some cheese and crackers just inside. Lots of dogs. Also, I understand that Pat Troys, the Irish pub just down the street from the Holiday Inn will let you tie your dog up outside.
  11. I'll have to say that when I go to a restaurant like Palena, the hamburger is just about the last thing I would consider ordering, given all of the other creative fare on the bill. But with the previous posting, I guess I'll just have to suck it up next time I'm in there and give the burger a try.
  12. Do ventorms only have one nut, or do they pack the customary pair?
  13. At one time, Washingtonian Magazine rated the burger at Sam & Harry's as the best in town. Of course that was before Palena opened up. It sounds like there be be a couple of categories here: The fast food burger (a la 5 guys), the sit down burger (Paleana) and the seafood burger (Citronelle). What other places belong in these categories. Or is this too much segmentation? I get the feeling that the sit down places will beat the fast food places most every time. And which category would the burgers at the Tune Inn fit?
  14. I'm thinking of heading over to Firefly after work this evening for a glass of wine or something.
  15. I sort of like Thomas Sweet in Georgetown. I like the machine that combines the toppings, such as heath bar, into the ice cream. For convience, I like Sunday Times on Mt. Vernon Ave. in the Del Ray section of Alexandria.
  16. Well, now that I started this thread, what qualifies is: any sort of protein (no veggie burgers need apply) that has been chopped, formed into a patty and seared on both sides and placed between the two sides of what will pass in the industry for a hamburger bun. After that, anything goes. Bonus points will be given in cases where juice runs down your chin on the first bite.
  17. Is the lobster burger at Citronelle eligible for "Best Hamburger" consideration? Or is this category limited to beef?
  18. What about the strip mall that Ray's the Steaks is in on Wilson Blvd. between Roslyn and Courthouse. In addition to Ray's, there is Village Bistro and Guillo's. Plus, I think there is a Pho place and at least one other.
  19. For those of you interested in the new spring menu at Eve, Chef Cathal gave me an advance copy. As I understand it, the new fare is available starting this evening. Voila: edited to add: Shit, it didn't work. Don, did you disable the attach file function? [Mark, yes, because of the potential for copyright violations (and my limited time in policing them) But here it is! Cheers, Rocks] Eve_Spring_Menu.pdf
  20. I will obtain the appropriate clearances before attempting any such conversation. Sheesh, bureaucracy is everywhere in this town.
