  1. Instead of whisking breakable salt and pepper shakers away when kids sit down, perhaps the server could just bring an age-appropriate set to the table when taking the order, or serving the drinks: breakable for adults, plastic for the kids' tables.
  2. Whole Foods in Alexandria does not have it. Planet Wine does not have it. Arrowwine now has one left. $12.
  3. I'm sure nobody would suggest that Keller and Richard leave the kitchen in the hands of talentless cousins! Sometimes the student is every bit as talented as the teacher, if not moreso. So yeah, I'd love to own a piece of art supervised by, say Ghirlandaio, because his apprentice, Michelangelo, was one bad-ass painter!
  4. Corridor only has the 2004. Beltway's office is in Potomac, but their only retail store is in Towson. It has the 2005. They are both - as well as Total Wine in Virginia - the same company. (At least that's what they told me when I called.)
  5. Anywhere in Maryland? [fyi: it is that small state on the other side of the Potomac River.]
  6. Something tells me there may be at least two sides to this one.
  7. Here is the Montmartre thread. Here is the Bistro d'Oc thread. But you'll have to wander through the Dive Bars thread for more about Tune Inn (or start your own thread for it).
  8. Thanks to Heather for arranging our dinner - there were 12 of us at the $20 Tuesday last night. We were at one long table and decided to order in three groups of four people each. Our group ordered the lentil "samosas" and three mains: the vegetarian platter, a lamb and the beef short ribs. The samosas and first two mains were wonderfully tasty and satisfying. The short ribs were really dismal (not braised - they were dessicated gristly little bits of beef that had been baked to a faretheewell and adhered stubbornly to the bones.) The vegetarian sampler had about 10 different items arranged around the perimiter of the injera, and the lamb and short ribs were mounded in the middle. We probably could have ordered another main, but with the injera swelling up inside us, we felt satisfied with what really amounted to two. Service was very good. The beer selection last night consisted of one kind of Ethiopian (not honey or St. George) and it tasted like Budlite. After one of those, I switched to Guinness. Total damage including two beers, tax and tip: $24. Ethiopian is definitely the kind of food that is meant to be shared - perfect for a $20 Tuesday. Thanks again Heather!
  9. Tweaked and I walked past this place two times and didn't see it. And while we didn't know the exact address on the block,* we were looking for it. Turns out there is no sign right now, the lights were out due to a power outage, and there is nothing in the window (which is rather high up off the sidewalk- at least to me) that indicates what is being sold inside is good wine. It looked like it was a closed-up old package store with construction going on. We had to settle for some wan Ethiopian BudLite wannabe brewskis while we waited for the rest of you winos to show up at our $20 Tuesday dinner at Etete (which is on the same block.) *1905 9th.
  10. Unfortunately the opinion that having a lot of boisterous children in 2Amys on a Saturday night is a bad thing, is not an abberation. There will always those who do not enjoy being around a lot of young children eating pizza. 2Amy's is being responsive to this by giving those types a choice. They will be able to go from home to work to dinner and back home without ever having to interact with a child or a family. If that is how they want to live, so be it. There are also going to be those who are around kids all day long and just want a nice Calgon dinner. [Not that an adult-only upstairs with a bar will be any less noisy or rowdy.]
  11. That was only because I got whip lash from the triple-take I did when you tapped me on the shoulder.
  12. I agree. Leave the bar downstairs, make the whole floor an adults-only space, and have families with kids wait outside or go upstairs into the new play pen dining area. [TedE: I'm sure they will figure out the logistics.]
  13. eh... that's a drop in the bucket compared to this meal. Or this one. Chump change compared to this one.
  14. HH / lite dinner at the bar at Ristorante Tosca, around 7pm, followed by a French flick at the E Street Cinema. Feel free to join us.
  15. Shoppers has boneless short ribs for $3.99/lb pretty much all the time. Bone-in are about $3.59. Meatiness varies. Asking the butcher to put a pack together will result in a very good deal if he/she is amenable.
  16. There is an entire thread on eGullet called Deal Breakers - Ditching Someone over Eating Habits. I suggest you read the 90+ posts, including some by members of this board, as a good start. Some of the stories are hilarious.
  17. Baltimore City council has just passed its own smoking ban, and the mayor is looking forward to signing the ban into law. Starting January 1, 2008 smoking will be banned in restaurants and bars in the city. Brewer's Art, here I come.
  18. Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in awhile.
  19. There once was a man, went by Sweeney With offal and such, quite a genie Made his head into cheese Turned sow's ear into purse But was stumped when it came to his weenie. HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHARLES!
