  1. Mr. BLB and I are in the early stages of deciding to stay home this year. As tempted as I am to go make reservations at Corduroy, I also really want to cook dinner right. (Mostly I want to make a dinner that tastes good and isn't cold...) I always want to plunge into the Gourmet or Bon Appetit recipes but they are always for 8-10 people or more. Since I don't want LOTS of leftovers but some would be nice. Somehwere, perhaps Eating Well, I saw a recipe for a stuffed turkey for two. That might be fun. Any good recipes out there for the basics? Thanks! Jennifer
  2. Bravo on the well-thought out and fair system! I'm insanely jealous as I have a prior commitment that evening. Enjoy!
  3. I was toying with a stop somewhere after work and before yet another meeting. Firefly or Palena???? Hmnn.... The choices are endless.
  4. We stopped in on Sunday for a hit and run proscutto plate along with some lovely wine and cheese. Had the la perla, the la tur and the blue ashy goat cheese. The la perla is amazing! Also had the amazing calimari fritti, which I think gets better everytime we go. We also walked down from Van Ness so had the advantage of feeling almost virtous. Jennifer
  5. Thought I saw you go in as I was leaving...Had the hotdog in honor of the start of the playoffs (Go Cards!) and wasn't wowed by it. Perfectly good hotdog, it just wasn't the right combo of flavors for me. (Please note I am considering the hot dog breakfast.) Brought home a pork shoulder to nibble during the game--yum! (That was lunch!) I have a cannoli in the fridge for later. Jennifer
  6. And I'm off tomorrow!!! Was considering a trip out to Bethesda for some greasy red sauce but this would be much, much better... Jennifer
  7. You should bring both--see if people can tell the difference!!!Wish I was going to be there but we're "fingers-crossed" condo shopping this afternoon... Jennifer
  8. Ouch, ouch, ouch... Just emailed Mr. BLB to say perhaps a visit this weekend was in order--sort of a show of support. Although given how busy they always are when we drive past, I'm not sure this review will hurt too much.
  9. I did and they were very good. I can usually only a have a few before I get tired of them and these were hard to resist. I had hoped to go nearby to Mandalay but we were in a rush so...
  10. Stopped by--the door said they opened at six but there appeared to be no life inside. Had a decent burger nearby at the Quarry.
  11. I tried calling this afternoon and the phone has been disconnected. Anyone been lately? Thanks! Jennifer
  12. It's the only place I've even seen my husband buy wine. It's not intimaditing and they are good at hand holding. Now I don't remember a damn thing about the bottle he bought there but I applaud his effort. Jennifer
  13. New sign on the door indicating they are renovating and reconcepting toward a "pit barbeque" place with a full bar/limited sit down options and will be back on or before October 10th.
  14. Went into the Van Ness Giant for the first time in months and they have officially set a date to close for renovations--October 7th. They will run shuttles to the new store on 14th Street a few days a week but it won't be the same. Not that I really shop there much. They also seem to have stopped getting deliveries on somethings--the magazines and candy are completely gone and the canned goods are starting to look a little thin. Jennifer
  15. Derek, we would order desserts even if they were scribbled on the back of the staff's hands...! BTW, I loved the new menu holders last visit. Nicely done! Jennifer
  16. I had a VERY quick dinner at the bar tonight before a meeting. Getting there early makes all the difference! The veal raviolinis (sp?) were terrific and the sauce was great--perfect to soak up with the bread. The pesto version of the gnocchi was also amazing. Yum! More bread soaked up the extra sauce. (I know...two pasta dishes but what can a girl do?) The sour cream goat cheesecake was lovely but not nearly as good as the pumpkin version. Roger (?) consoled me that it is still too early for pumpkin season. Took home cookies to Mr. BLB who was working late. Sipped a very much needed Bronx too... I also haven't been in much lately--not really sure why. Dino is probably a factor. We've had lots of baseball and I've been working like mad. My affection for Firefly is too... Whatever the excuses, I need to get back more often. Are they doing Saturday lunch again? Cleveland Park book sale is this weekend... Jennifer
  17. We're just drowning in extra Nationals tickets aren't we? I've still got 2 seats for today and 2 seats for tomorrow that I can't use! Sigh... Jennifer, who didn't get to Sonoma last night....
  18. Abandoned by my darling husband I possess one extra ticket for tonight's Giants-Nats game (2 sections over from where Bonds hit his homer but alas in foul territory...) We also have 2 seats for tomorrow's game (4:35) that we aren't using in Sec. 323. Free to a good home! Will messenger and/or email them depending on which ticket(s) you want... PM/email me! To keep it food related, I'm thinking of a hit and run raid on Sonoma before the game if I can get out of my office at a decent time tonight... What's the latest I should plan to get there to be at RFK on time? (I will be SO glad when baseball season is over...And this is from a lifelong Cards fan...) Jennifer
  19. Not sure but I know they have another branch in Prince George's County that predate the one on 8th...I seem to recall finding a website somewhere...and now I can't find it...
  20. I know someone who has had them caterer events to good results. It's on 8th on the other side of the highway, close to the Navy Yard.
  21. Lightly snacking... I've had an apple and a pear plus the last of some very nice expensive dark chocolate. Will probably eat a necatarine later....
  22. First pear of the season from Reid's. I discovered pears just in the last few years and it's been a real love affair. This was a regular Bartlett--hoping for the red Bartlett's soon. I love this time of year--still getting tomatoes and necatarines but the apples and pears are starting to appear. Yum! Jennifer
