  1. It's just bleak.... We certainly supported Riedel's and would support something else that was new, original and tasty. Give us a Two Amy's, a Dino or a Buck's. We'd be there once a week at least! The options for a quick dinner or carryout just aren't there and I hate having to find parking and fight traffic if I want to go down to Cleveland Park or up Connecticut Avenue... I was out of town last week and Mr. BLB ordered a sub sandwich from Besta Pizza! That's just sad.... I note that the coffee place up by the car wash still hasn't opened. I haven't tried the new place next to Charlie Changs but it doesn't look that appealing. Sigh... Jennifer
  2. We went for my birthday in January. It was a perfectly nice meal but I wasn't wowed or overwhelmed by it. I remember the rissoto with truffles that they forgot to put the truffles on--they came out after about 5 minutes to quickly shave some truffles on top. I remember that the server would adjust the fork and knive if I had moved them a quarter inch back to where they "belonged." Beyond that I don't remember entrees or dessert which is quite rare for me... (I was still suffering the effects of a terrible plane ride back from St. Louis that morning and general exhaustion from a whirlwind trip home.) Jennifer
  3. They usually have a number of different stations--there is a pasta offering of some sort, salad bar, a fresh carved meat, an asian noodle thing, and maybe sushi. It's pricier now than it used to be but it is still better than much of the typical jury duty offerings.
  4. I like the cafeteria at the National Gallery of Art for jury duty lunches. Last time though I was dismissed so early I was able to go home for lunch.
  5. Don, I really think they should get first priority in whatever event comes next. I also think that the winners of this lottery should stand aside for the next event to give others first dibs and/or volunteer to go straight to the wait list. Jennifer
  6. Pegu Club! My conference call for tomorrow has been cancelled and I have 3 hours to kill before dinner. I see a pre-dinner cocktail in my future. Thanks for the reminder!I was too tired and too full after a late breakfast at Balthazar to hit the Shake Shack today. I can't believe I'm saying that. My foodie rep is being ruined!!!! Jennifer
  7. I went to Blue Smoke last fall with friends and really liked it. I've got a group of five this time and this seemed like the most likely to fit this groups bill. I think Virgil's at Times Square has good que too...Fortunately I hit NY often enough, usually, that I can get in most of my wishes eventually...
  8. Unfortunately we've got 4 people so I'm pretty much out of luck for Babbo. Maria Pia got good reviews elsewhere and had good word of mouth from friends. I just don't usually trust Italian that far uptown. I've had many a NY trip where I never get farther than Union Square. The cupcake place on the LES I want to try is Buttercup Cafe, I think. I'm too far away from my file. It's another of the Magnolia break-aways. I'll work in Magnolia after the Knickerbocker and maybe if I feel like doing some serious walking, I'll hit Billy's Bakery too. I'll need to walk if I'm going to eat that many cupcakes! Jennifer
  9. Wow! Komi was exactly what I had hoped for and Mr. BLB greatly enjoyed his birthday dinner, particularly after I assured him I hadn't mentioned it during the reservation. The amuse was dates filled with marscapone, lightly oiled with sea salt and served warm. Nice and chewy. We started with the proscutto. Very nice presentation. I had the rissotto--great flavors, toothy rice--not mushy which is why I avoid the rissotto so often. Mr. BLB had the spinach gnochi. So rich, so good. Made me wish there was bread on the table--it's hard to soak up that yummy butter with crackers. (Which were totally beyond belief good...) We both had the suckling pig. So good! I think the polenta and brussel sprouts with the salty little bits of bacon(?) were even better than the pig though. I would have liked more brussel sprouts though! It is so rare to get a full serving of vegetables these days! Dessert was the greek doughnuts with the chocolate pudding. Wow! That chocolate pudding good give Ray's chocolate mousse a run for its money. We had various wines that I didn't write down and don't remember. But they were perfect for the food... I thought the space had a very NY vibe--sparse decoration; staff all in black and that narrow town house thing. I have the spiced gingerbread lollipops in my purse for later! Jennifer
  10. New York here I come! I haven't been in the city since April. (Wow--much longer than normal) I'm going for work so I'm juggling all sorts of needs and limited time. On my list: Shake Shack A tour of the various cupcake war outlets. (Can I find my way around the Lower East Side on my own???) Blue Smoke Knickerbocker Maria Pia Either Balthazar or Pastis fo breakfast one morning. I meant to sit on my phone for Babbo reservations and then got too busy. Sigh... The only one that really worries me is Maria Pia --it got nice comments on menupages.com and I really liked the menu and it's right around the corner from my first meeting... We'll see. Then I'm off to Cincinnati with even less free time... I'll work some chili in and that's about it.
  11. The gnocchi is still the sage, wild rice, wonderful thingy. (As of Wed.) The soup is a cauliflower wild mushroom delight. No raviolini or riccota dumpling thing on Wed. Pumpkin goat cheese cake was there and the return of the brownie banana split... Jennifer (the other one...)
  12. Reviewing my notes for tomorrow night's pre-birthday, I'm a terrible wife for taking a business trip and missing Mr. BLB numerically signifiant birthday, dinner.... 1) Order game 2) Look for the sea urchin 3) Put ourselves in Seabastion's hands for the wines. 4) Eat the cheese 5) Doughnuts! 6) Stop eating soon.... 7) Plan on cabbing it home What am I missing? I seem to recall reading somewhere that Evan, formerly of Palena, was at Komi. Is that right? He was always a fave server (not that I don't love Kate and Malik too...) Thanks! Jennifer
  13. Okay, why didn't someone tell me that the P Street Whole Foods no longer has a Jamba Juice????? A sub-question is why didn't I notice since I do shop there at least once a month... Sigh.... I made a special trip for my poor scratchy throat and everything!!!! Jennifer
  14. It did but as pissed as I am about it, I think it was an aberration. If it happens again, I'll dish the dirt happily!
  15. Sigh... Don't tell me I can't have the table I requested because "the investors" have reserved it, stick me at a dinky and too small table and then not two minutes later seat a couple there who aren't "the investors." (And that the table is always reserved on that day for the investors when I've sat there on that day of the week multiple times!) And when I share this observation with management don't tell me that the hostess feels terrible when she hasn't walked over herself to apologize. Grumble....
  16. Signatures will have to wait, perhaps a special treat in a few weeks because I realized I really wanted to take him to Komi... I feel at peace with my decision.
  17. The American ones or the yummy chocolate Canadian/UK ones?
  18. I haven't been since 1988 but I really enjoyed it the handful of times I went when I was down there in 1987-1988. Gosh... I'm feeling old now... Jennifer
  19. Monday night. The dinner choices at home are a chicken that needs to be roasted (so 90 minutes from prep until dinner) or chili that was so spicy my eyes are still watering. We chose Dino instead. A little proscutto, a little cheese, a little wine. Perfect. We also tried the polenta with wild mushrooms--great, earthy dish. For dessert I tried the pumpkin "pie" which is delicious but being crust-less is really more of a custard. Mr. BLB tried the grilled nutella paninni. A lovely evening. We concluded with a stop at the organic grocery store for milk where we spotted Dick Gregory but Mr. BLB was too shy to tell him how much he admired his work and one of his books. Oh well! Jennifer
  20. Thanks! I'd prefer not to do Georgetown, though I would have made an exception for Michel and Mark.
  21. Doesn't it have like 8 or 12 grams of fat per serving????
  22. Thank you for bringing this thread back up to the top. I have been racking my brain trying to find someplace to take Mr. BLB for a pre-birthday dinner on Saturday. (Bad wife that I am, I will be on a business trip for his actual birthday...) I wanted to go somewhere we haven't been to lately (or ever). He declined Citronelle. I had planned to do Ten-Pehn but Tom's latest comments discouraged me. Dino, Palena and Firely are in the rotation pretty often. Signature's has intrigued me over the course of several RW's. I think he'll like the food and it won't be the same old, same old. One less thing to worry about! Jennifer
  23. 72 within five miles (Van Ness) 14 within two miles I have often thought there weren't enough because there isn't one right here at Van Ness when I want a Chantico fix. Of course, I can still fit into my jeans so being farther away from Chantico is probably a good thing.... There are 4 within 2 miles of where we are house hunting.... Jennifer
