  1. Oddity of the evening at Palena--nicely dressed woman hovering in the hallway with the small booths. Next thing I hear is the woman telling Kelly that there are 3 people but they are skinny and will be fine in the booth made for 2 people. It sounded like she must have sat down because I next heard the staff suggesting that it would be a nicer experience for her if she allowed them to clear the table from the previous guests before getting settled. Sure enough just as we were leaving, they squeezed 3 people into that booth, including a chair by the side, partially blocking the hallway into the dining room, which was at least partially full as the plates kept flowing back there... You can't wait a few minutes for the staff to get you seated? Very strange indeed....
  2. Sweet Surrender also has decent biscotti...
  3. That's a pretty lame representation then. There was no pig flavor anywhere in my salad today. It was nice but in no way special. Now the confit of pig bellly was amazing. Wow! That was amazing and well worth the seach for a parking space. And the birthday cake was adorable and yummy. No cider sidecar alas. I had something with pomegranites what was quite nice instead. 4. I believe the Cleveland Park list serv is planning a happy hour there that night. It might be too much for such a small place!Jennifer
  5. Mixed... I think we went in Winter 02 or Winter 03. The whole menu was available with additional charges for a few items. All I can really remember is that it wasn't good enough to want to go back again immediately...
  6. Last week we made a last minute decision to grab a bite in Georgetown prior to a show at Blues Alley. I knew I didn't want Clydes. Beyond that I had no real preferences and a quick tour of Open Table suggested Old Glory as an option. Two orders of brisket later, we won't be back. Dry, tough and pretty flavorless. Oh well....
  7. Planning for Christmas eve and I want a few cheese to nibble on while watching A Charlie Brown Christmas. How long does cheese last? If I go on Thursday will I be okay for Saturday night? What about Wednesday? Thanks! Jennifer
  8. But that takes all the fun out of it!!!I recall hearing that there is tarragon involved too...
  9. I love sauteed chicken thighs. Flour, thighs, olive oil and 15 minutes to dinner. Lightly salted and I try to have brown rice or couscous handy. Jennifer P.s. The guac has to have lots of cilantro....
  10. I tend to be glad Billy's and Magnolia are so far away. I'd be in sorry shape if they were closer...I almost bought the WF's cupcakes yesterday cause I need to provide munchies for a meeting but decided to pass. Maybe next time... Jennifer
  11. Golden Triangle definitely does--just heard a news story yesterday.
  12. Stopped in for a quick bite with mixed results. (Note I did study this thread but tend to want things milder than must folks here.) The salty squid is great. But then I'm a squid slut. The duck with basil was less appealing and cold--no warning on the menu that it was cold. The fried gluten with mushrooms was very nice but too much food for the flavor and texture. Just a few bites would have been fine. I'd go back when next in the area and explore a few more options. Jennifer
  13. I had lunch at Dino last Friday. As I told Dean at the time, I didn't take the day off just to have lunch there but I did plan my day around being in the neighborhood in time. A lovely break in the day and very much enjoyed it--the seriously addictive calamari and the lasagna were my choices. I was a wee bit disappointed that the menu had to be pared down but such is life and business. Next time though I'm not sitting at the bar. As great as Chris was, I was pretty chilly! Jennifer
  14. I did a quick stop at Palena the other night before a meeting. (What am I going to do when I don't have meetings nearly every week just around the corner? Besides see my husband more often???) The pheasent raviolini was amazing. Several notches better than the previous version with duck which was pretty darn good too. This rendition of the gnocchi is heaven on a plate and I'm going to be devestated when it departs, no matter that I know the next one will be good too. I concluded with the pumpkin goat cheese cake--terrific but I think I've had enough for the season and will move on. I was tempted by the pecan pie bars but needed more info or someone who has actually tried them to report it. Ann is definitely in fine form and seems to be expermenting. There was a new cookie in Mr. BLB's takeaway cookie plate--an lightly glazed cookie with raisins. He didn't like it much but if we have to take a few tasty duds from Ann before she finds the next blockbuster, I'll happily volunteer to be a tasting guinea pig. Definitely go early--it so nice to be there as it opens and before the rush starts. Jennifer
  15. I support it 100%. It makes such a difference in going to clubs in California and bars in NY now. I think all of Ontario is smoke-free now too. Love it. There are often times where I'll want to go see a band and we'll decide not to go because because we don't want to deal with the smoke.
  16. Stopping into Palena tonight for a quick bite before yet another meeting...
  17. Someone please tell me that I'm not the only one chugging water and aspirin this morning.... I can't believe I ate everything last night. I usually have leftovers. It must have been the wine. It was a wonderful evening. Thanks again! Jennifer
  18. The Convention Center construction...It was a lousy location to begin with in a very transitional neighborhood and once construction started and streets were closed and there was zero parking, they couldn't make a go of it. At least that's what I heard. The other Jennifer
  19. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! HillValley--you are an event coordinator of the highest caliber (I was going to use a fancier word but I can't spell at this point.) Michael--A great evening for a great cause. As I do my year end gifts, I'll remember Coaching for College. It was great putting more faces to names. And a wonderful treat to try a wine older than I am for the first time. Wow! More when I'm sober! Jennifer
