  1. On November 15th, the grand opening of the Bourse will be happening. I'm not sure how I feel about food halls yet. My experience so far has been 50/50. I have been to the Block VA, and was not impressed one bit. I frequently head to Belvedere Square in Bmore, and love it there. If I were to give a crude description to food halls, I would describe them as souped up food courts. Am I wrong? A great write up about the opening of the Bourse, The Bourse Marketplace grand opening set for November, wriiten by Kenneth Hilario 9-13-18 Phiiadelphia Business Journal It may be worth mentioning that a couple of the vendors at the Bourse are District imports, Takorean, as well as Mi and Yu Noodle Bar, a DC based chain. Actually I think the developers are from DC as well, now that I think about it. I did a bit of research and learned that bit. I can't seem to locate the article.

  3. I may have the opportunity to write an collection of places not to be missed in Philly. With the wealth of the posters in this forum, I am asking for a little help. Please chime in where I should visit, and places that are not to be missed. The spots can range from where to eat, where to dine, where the best public bathroom is , think unusual, think funky, think like a local. Please and thank you for all your suggestions. Once I am chosen to write this book, I will personally throw a party and invite everyone to celebrate my very first publication. This is our opportunity to go public. It is with the support of everyone that I have met along the way, including a few of you in this forum, that will encourage me to crush this challenge. I plan on KILLIN' It. 1st time, kat
  4. In PA for a wedding this weekend. Looked at us a bit funny as 3 families with kids strolled into a pub for brunch, but frankly not much else was open or looked good...plus all the parents needed a beer. Great draft list. I had a local bitters on cask (Yards ESA, I think). Po-boys were tasty and filling, and the fried green tomato BLT with Benton's bacon hit the hangover helper high points. Definitely a solid brunch/lunch option if you're in that neck of the woods.
  5. I have a reservation at Osteria the Sat. before Christmas. It's on the early side, 5:30, but I thought better to secure a spot than take a chance later. My only problem is that I'm going to have to eat a DiNic's pork sandwich for breakfast at that rate! Although, I'm very intrigued by Fork etc, which is a cafe next to Fork. The concept seems very unique; a great restaurant, Fork, that opens a cafe to serve breakfast, lunch, dinner to go and high quality local products. Perhaps Sunday brunch.
  6. Mr. Monavano and I went to Amada, an authentic Spanish tapas restaurant, last week. Amada is located in Old City, and features 3 seating areas; a large bar and high table area, restaurant table seating, and a few seats looking into the kitchen. We sampled about 10 dishes ( I can not remember one) and the red sangria. The sangria had small diced pears and apples with a cinnamon stick to swirl in the aroma. Our dishes included: Complimentary flat crisps to scoop up a tuna, caper and balsamic dip. Charcuteria mixto - I'm not a connoisseur of serrano ham, but it was delicious and freshly sliced to order and paper thin Tortilla Espanola - This came with a saffron aoili, presented in a mortar and pestle. More saffron was sprinkled on top to be ground in. Fun. The "tortilla" was more like a big potato pancake with onions. It was fantastic. It's filling, so consider that. Almejas con chorizo - Tiny clams and chorizo in a broth just begging to be sopped up with the bread. Albondigas - soft bite size lamb meatballs and fresh peas in a creamy manchego cheese ? sauce Flat bread with manchego cheese - this was good, but we ordered it without knowing we'd be getting gratis crips with tuna dip. Probably redundant. Kobe beef carpaccio - This was a special. Seared kobe slice thin and fanned out. Topped with truffle emulsion and garnished with candied carmelized onions. This was melt in your mouth good. The emulsion lent an earthy tone to the dish. Even though it was Kobe beef, it was only priced a few dollars over the regular menu items. Arroz con leche - warm creamy rice pudding with current compote. Served in an old fashioned glass, this was totall comfort, not your mom's rice pudding! (at least mine, sorry ma) Almond crips - complimentary after the meal. I will not make the mistake of being in Philly and NOT eating here again. It will be interesting to go to Jaleo now to compare and contrast. eta: all this for $85 before tip. Our server (Stephanie) and runners were very hospitable and kept the meal going at a perfect pace for us.
  7. My boyfriend and I were in Philly last weekend and had some amazing meals. We started on sat by getting drinks at continental. You can sit outside and they have fun drinks like the Champagne-a-rama! Then we ate at Budahkan, which is always amazing. We had a tuna pizza (thinly sliced tuna and wasabi on focaccia) as an appetizer and i had the seared ahi tuna, which was on of the best I have ever had, while my boyfriend had the steak which was equally delicious. On sunday we had brunch at Continental mid-town, which is such a fun kooky atmosphere. For dinner we went for drinks at Jones and dinner at to Morimoto, which was very impressive. I absolutely LOVE Stephen Starr restaurants (as you can tell from my culinary weekend). Why oh why can't we have a Stephen Starr in DC??
  8. "Garces Leases Old Original Bookbinders" by Michael Klein of philly.com. A big story on several levels, this has also been reported on by Jason Sheehan at phillymag.com. Super-heady stuff, if you're in the tourism or PR industry; I wish I could get excited about it. Actually, I just did! I'd neglected to include Old Original Bookbinder's on the Oldest Restaurants in Philadelphia list (since it was open when this website was founded on April 15, 2005, it gets included despite it having closed in 2009).
  9. Had to chime in about a lovely little spot where we had a wonderful lunch at in March. It's called Pizzicato and is a few blocks from the Ben Franklin House at 3rd and Market. Nice and sunny, as it's on the corner of the block, and lively, with an open kitchen. Since then, I've been thinking about the honey lavender dressing on the salad I had, which was a tasty mix of pears, gorgonzola, crispy pancetta and some very nice greens. One of these days I'm going to have to try to recreate the dressing, as I asked for the recipe since it was so good. We also enjoyed the calamari appetizer dressed with a trio of sauces - plum, a spicy marinara and a third one that escapes me. A seafood pasta dish was generously loaded with all sorts of shrimp, scallops, squid, etc. and the pizza was nice and crispy. Nicest treat of all was that the meal ended with a dessert on the house, just because the manager was a nice guy.
  10. Perhaps check out Fork on Market- 3rd and Market - a convivial bistro open 7 days a week(Old City- also where Amada is on Chestnust so you just can't go wrong in the area). A great location to grab a drink too- 2nd St.
  11. While staying on the edge of Old City at the Sheraton Society Hill, my daughter and I decided we needed to venture out for Sushi. Just a few blocks away we stumbled across Zento. It was a late Saturday lunch on a chilly afternoon and we were one of the few patrons at that hour. The service was attentive and fast...and the sushi quite delicious. We stuck with pretty basic sashimi and a couple of rolls and were pleased. The only downside was their lunch special was only offered during the week days and not on Saturday. Regardless, we would definitely recommend.
  12. Had dinner at Farmicia this past weekend and had an enjoyable meal. Highlights for me were the Tuscan Grain Salad (organic spelt, chopped garden vegetables, lemon-basil vinaigrette, arugula) and the Crispy Fried Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail (atop a trio of fries, bloody mary dipping sauce). My entree of Boneless Pork Chop Dijon (grilled, honey glazed turnips, broccoli, cider-sage sauce) was good, but the meat was slightly overcooked and therefore a bit dry, but the sauce helped. It did have a nice bit of char from the grill that went well with the sweetness of the turnips.
