  1. I can help with this. do you have any geographic specifications within the city?
  2. Drinking a Sagres Portuguese lager. To my friend Don Rockwell, in helping me work through (continually) the hardest time of my life.
  3. rocks is going to hate this, but I also have a pop-culture reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motherboy_XXX
  4. I went to the Rosslyn one in February and it's still one of the best phos I've had. Following my rating system: Broth: Probably my benchmark pho in terms of balance. Just a great recipe. It could maybe stew a bit longer - 9 Beef: Consistently fresh, but they sometimes skimp - 8 Noodle: Only once or twice have I had doneness issues here - 8 Condiments: Nothing special, many of the places in the Eden Center will give sawtooth herb. They don't - 7.5 Service/Atmosphere: Always efficient with varying degrees of brusqueness. It could use a fish tank - 7
  5. how did you have the 11th item of a reader's digest online article queued up for this very topic?
  6. I think given the constitutional jurisprudence on this very issue, it's fair that Ravi's behavior should attract strict scrutiny.
  7. Interesting. Not to impugn your experience, but simply to add a data point: I only ever go with an older Chinese woman named Lilly. She has been going there for years and knows the older man you mention. She's pretty well off and I think tips well. She brings me (visibly Caucasian), my Chinese father, and my Caucasian mother. She goes up to the register and orders a bunch of stuff and the staff happily brings it out. It's good service. There are a lot of factors there that alter the experience - the personal relationship and the fact half of our party are visible minorities - but might be useful.
  8. Wins count the same early in the season as they do late in the season.
  9. I cheated and went to the dining guide but in my defense, I really wanted to get on the scoreboard. Pretty sure 4 is Open Kitchen.
  10. I can take an initial stab at number four. It looks like DR has some kind of fish tartare, maybe salmon. There's an green herby topping with creme fraiche. Maybe some kind of pickle or squash chip? then a piece of toast. I think he's drinking a chardonnay with that. Then his dining companion has some kind of plate toast, a pate, gherkins and a little salad.
  11. cheezepowder nailed it. who would have guess it was a lemon and thyme crumble?
  12. Looks like morels, some kind of pea puree, watercress and a fish of some sort?
  13. looks like grapefruit, radish, pickled red onions, and queso fresco, so i'm thinking something with a latin flair. ETA: Oyamel?
  14. Escoffier: I'm sorry to say that I read your criticism of Tom's review and I find it logically incoherent. I get the sense that you had your mind made up prior to reading it, and were thus attuned to any small mistake that, frankly, is immaterial to anyone without your level of knowledge of Korean culture. And several which really weren't mistakes unless some unreasonable meaning is read in - as you were quite willing to do. You don't think it's possible he simply mentioned Seoul because it's South Korea's largest city and the most likely place to fly in? I think he is simply is informing the lay reader that soju is an alcoholic beverage. Once again, an innocuous turn of phrase not meant to be taken literally. A valid complaint, but hardly relevant to the assessment of the food. A fair criticism, but it just as well speak to his familiarity with grape leaves. That sounds an awful lot like custard. I think he means it stands out with respect to the other restaurants in Virginia that perhaps do not evince the same level of detail. I come to this conclusion because it would be highly unusual (and not very useful) for a local restaurant writer to use restaurants in Korea as his basis for comparison. If only we were all so lucky.
  15. May I suggest a new rule? Only one game going at a time - winner of the last game posts the new one.
  16. There were always cats in the restaurants in Shanghai. I fed this one, although that probably wasn't a good idea in hindsight. (didn't reuse the chopsticks!)
  17. Judging by the caption, I inferred he got it at au pied de cochon. what i can't figure out is if it's the restaurant in france or montreal. i've been going over that picture like the Zapruder film. I'll let you know when I've got more.
  18. I e-mailed them and this is what they had to say about happy hour: "Our Happy Hour specials include half-price house wine and beer, as well as a special Happy Hour menu on which all items are discounted from their regular price." edited to add: thanks for asking for me TSchaad!
  19. What is the substance of the happy hour deal their website mentions? Thinking about bringing my mom there after a matinee @Ballston.
  20. Don, when I read your account, which was a good read, I got angry and upset for you as you built up to the realization that you paid a great deal more than you should for the growler of beer. However, and this draws a great deal on what seanmike said, I think it can be reframed. In particular, this is a restaurant/bar that seems to provide excellent food and beer at a pretty good value. In order to do that, they sell growlers of beer at a premium for those who wish to maybe have something they can't get at stores, or that will serve as a keepsake. Maybe they think it's fresher than beer bottled and shipped to wherever they normally buy beer. Either way, the prices are available if one asks, and they don't seem to make the representation that this is a better deal than buying it at stores.
