  1. First the Childe Harold, now Bennigans for the boss. I hear they're looking for a good man at the consulate up in Novaya Zemlya.
  2. This is a label to look for. Their Sauvignon Blanc's are usually good too, as are their Chenins. Other Southern Hemisphere roses that I've enjoyed recently are the Delheim Pinotage Rose from South Africa and the Margan "Saignee" from Oz, which is shiraz. Get them before the dollar tanks, erm, even more.
  3. Judging from the upwelling of complaints about BlackSalt's front desk, it's also quite useful for transmitting bad vibes...
  4. Wasn't there a lot of discussion about Miracle Whip around here recently? And wasn't it mostly declared harmless? Well the problem is that once you create something like that, people are inevitably tempted to do really, really unnatural things with it.* (*Kinda like free will. And genitals, obviously.)
  5. No. Their only booze outlet in DC is on Connecticut just below Chevy Chase Circle.
  6. Let's keep this thread going. I'm tired of drinking the same stuff. Couple of bottles I've enjoyed recently: Neil Ellis -- Sincerely 2004. Ignore weakly punning name. Good South African Sauvignon Blanc. Quite "Loire" and racy. $11ish at Magruders. Falesco -- Vitiano 2003. Umbria. Sangiovese, Cab, Merlot. $8-$10. All over. Marquis Phillips "Holly's Blend" 2004 -- Semillon/Verdelho. $9. Nice. PS: Magruders has the Domaine De Pouy at $5.99 this week, Joe!
  7. Ditto. Cold leg of lamb and tapenade in wholewheat pitas. Hummus and salad on the side. Bottle of Abadia Retuerta. Power, and aircon, and fans, went out halfway through dinner so family repaired early to bed by candlelight with a couple of beers, on the grounds that they would just get all warm anyway.
  8. This is without doubt the worst voting decision made in this country in the last 214 days.
  9. Wow. So much for paying extra for DOP! And Hunt's the clear winner. If you'd run a betting pool on the side, Mike, the house would have cleaned up...
  10. Maybe it's time for a US chapter of The Campaign For Real Ale? Those guys know how to get the message out! This article, while dated, is a good primer. Anyone ever been to Racer's Cafe in Bawlmer?
  11. Sietsema didn't hate it. Edit: Dammit. Always late.
  12. Is there anything decent in that neighborhood? The Hamburger Hamlet isn't going to cut it. Maybe Addies on Rockville Pike? Anyone been to Jean-Michel across the road from HH?
  13. Leg of Aussie lamb from Trader Joe's. Very nice. Pan gravy. Haricots verts and a spring green salad. Barossa shiraz (Shotfire Ridge, OK for the price.) Couple of Macallans. Screw diets and screw abstaining. PS: Bought a bag full of Bahn Mi from An Binh the other day and put some in the fridge. Today I nuked one for breakfast. I highly recommend hot white radish with your morning coffee.
  14. Way to go the extra mile, Paul. I'm not sure Dogfish are going to be sending their best stuff to anyone else in the trade down here, though, given that they are going to start their own bunch of brewpubs in the DC area in the nearish future. First one was supposed to open in June in Silver Spring, but given that the site is still in the demolition phase I think it's probably on a "Ray's schedule."
  15. I agree on Jackie's. I like it too. But not as much as I'd like to. As for Ray's, I think it is becoming Gatsby's green light for us area eaters, month by month it recedes before us. But that's no matter -- tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms further. And one fine morning...
  16. I'm a dog fancier, myself. As far as sourcing goes, I favor The Frist Method. Efficient, and economical. Edit: Groooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuperrrrr!
  17. Anne Hull seems to be making the new P St. her beat. An earlier, prize-winning piece on the new Whole Foods.
  18. "Bon Vivant." Fun to say and annoys fuckhead Freedom Fry Francophobes.
  19. Brunch starts at 11:00. It is not wise to get there much later than that unless you want to hang out and study the Colorado Ave. street life* for a good while. (*Wave if you see me walking my dog.)
  20. Don't worry, I think we all recognize the need for the regulation of socializing.
  21. Without wanting to start another "Is the customer always right?" thread, I can't help but think that there's a point beyond which trying to make sure that your guests have a good experience just ceases to make sense. Hard as it may be to cast your pearls before swine, once they explicitly tell you: "We don't care", I think you're pretty much free to just shrug your shoulders, take their money and laugh about them later while closing up. Trying to reform a well-done steak eater or mid-course smoker only lays you open to the above variety of chickenshit backshot. Vive Eve! Le complaignant, merde!
  22. Rocks, tell me you didn't ask the question just so you could show you knew the answer?
