  1. Man, the things you learn from reading dr.com, albeit belatedly. DC limits wine shipments to one bottle a month? I been breaking me some laws! Happily, none of the online wine merchants whose kids I am putting through college seem to either know about this or give a hoot. And how the hell is such a regulation supposed to be enforced, exactly? A tiny mind is boggling here.
  2. It speaks volumes about the magical effects of Gastreaux's tender butt on the fairer sex that, when I hinted to my wife on the way home that it would be really neat if we had a smoker of our own, her response was not: "In your f*cking dreams!" But rather: "Yeah, that would be awesome!"
  3. It's OK. Bourdain gets paid, and the show won't be around long enough for anyone to remember it. Like that other great sitcom based on the hilarious behind-the-stove antics of a noted celebrity chef, "Emeril." Although at least Mr. Lagasse has made a lasting contribution to the culture.
  4. Still life of the day: Ventworm Sur-preeze with Assorted Fine Cheese.
  5. Many, many thanks to the organizers, table sitters, cooks, bakers, patissieres, piss artistes and everybody else who helped make that the. most. epic. picnic. ever. Feel kinda sick. But it's the good sick.
  6. How, um, discreet will we have to be with the, um, refreshments. Need we decant the, um, grape juice into Welch's bottles?
  7. I'm going to miss this thread once the picnic is over. It's been sorta like a food porn telenovela.
  8. Any excuse to go get a good pizza. On that note, I should add that I think they've now perfected one of the special pizzas that shows up from time to time -- the one with fontina and hot and sweet peppers. Previously, this was usually served with the house-made sausage, which is very good but perhaps added just a touch too much oiliness to the already-quite-unctuous cheese. Today they were doing it with gabagool (capicola, for those that don't watch The Sopranos) instead and it was great. The ham is drier and adds a salty/spicy kick that nicely complements the sting of the peppers.
  9. Had lunch at Montmartre today on their little terrace and thoroughly enjoyed it. They have a braised paleron steak on the menu right now that's like beefy butter. It's even better than their onglet, and that's saying something. The iles flottantes were also as good as usual. I'm going to make an effort to get down there more.
  10. Screw it. I'm gonna go tomorrow with the baby strapped to my chest. If pesto drips on his head, we'll just consider it an early education in Italian cuisine.
  11. This month's Washingtonian Best Bites has info on a passel of new places due to start up downtown, mainly in the new hotness that is Penn Quarter. (Blue box at the bottom of the page.) Looks like the Latin-Asian thing isn't going to be limited to Merkado, as the similarly-oddly-named Zengo goes up in that big new Gallery Place development. Others that sound interesting: "Rasika, specializing in Indian tawa (griddle) and sigri (barbecue) cookery" and yet another Tunks concept, "Acadiana, a Louisiana seafood house." Ray's Classics also gets a mention. Can't say we aren't spoiled for choice in DC these days.
  12. Erm, is there a shamefaced emoticon? Because, well, we were sort of in the neighborhood, so... (By the way, lunch is fast going the way of dinner, crowds-wise. While it's not Pizzeria Bianco crazy yet, they were two-thirds full today within a few minutes of opening the door at 12:00. Tim says the current record is zero to chock-a-block in 13 minutes.)
  13. To 2 Amys today to forget two weeks of too few carbs. (Albeit 11 lbs lighter.) Stuffed squid with saucy eggs, stuffed pizza with lamb meatballs, fontina and pecorino, all the chocolate/toffee icecream we could stuff in our faces. Maybe it's the insulin reaction talking, but I can't think of three better courses I've had in a row for, like, a really really long time. Must. Not. Go. Back. Tomorrow.
  14. I'd guess the lack of buzz is attributable to the fact they've been quietly doing what you described since 1976. Also, perhaps, related to the divergent demographic profiles of this site and their clientele in general. The wife and I went once, a few years ago. Everything was great, but our general sentiment on walking out the door was: "See you in 20 years, when we'll fit in."
  15. The crank don't work 'cause the vandals stole the handle!
  16. Tom Sietsema's review. Big fan of the original Hollywood East and excited that they're now doing dim sum. Looks like the new place is right across the street from Good Fortune on University Boulevard, hopefully the competition will spur both to new heights. (It sure it won't make parking any easier round there on weekends, though.)
  17. I'll be there + 1 1/3. Bringing: Summer chicken marinated in garlic and herbs. Avo/Kiwi sambal. Chenin.
  18. "Roger Miller's atmosphere is ... authentic" -Washington Post Most equivocal review clipping ever given pride of place on a restaurant's own Web site?
  19. Not just whiny, downright scary! "Washington, DC: Hi Tom!; PLEASE AT LEAST ANSWER QUESTION 1!; We're leaving for Ocho Rios in 3 days and we're trying to find out the "must not miss" dining experiences you or the chatters have had. I did my homework and didn't see any postcards, so PLEASE POST THIS!; Second, does DC have any 'raw food' scene? A friend who's coming to town is interested in trying this together. Thank you VERY much!;" Ya mon, go to Jamaica and maybe ya find a little mellow, now...
  20. Rocks, for a moment there, I confess the thought seriously occurred to me that you were so plugged in you got advance transcripts of live chats that haven't happened yet.
