  1. Are there any BYOB places in DC? I've been to a couple in NYC, but can't think of any in DC (particularly, those that would let you bring beer in?). Is the existence of these places mostly a function of the cost of a liquor license, or is there some law loophole in philly/nyc that allows these places?
  2. Did you notice if they had the Harar Hakim Stout? I remember this being the only fairly decent Ethiopian beer, and the last Ethiopian place I went to didn't have it (Meskerem)
  3. In my (admittedly not that extensive) experience as a server, this happened far more frequently than the "anonymous no tip" scenario, especially if the group was sufficiently drunk and nobody made sure that the person(s) paying with cc tipped on the whole amount. Really, really, really annoying, especially since in most cases you'd like to think the group would've given a decent tip if they had all just chipped in cash. Also, the bar I worked at had a "no splitting checks for parties over 6 people" policy, so there weren't as many instances where I would've encountered the "anonymous no tip" scenario, thank goodness.
  4. Fruit beers are typically very expensive to produce (and you generally can't charge that much more for them), which is why they're made so infrequently. I wonder what (if any) effect there would be from adding the blossoms themselves to a brew. Might have to do a little homebrew experiment with that, maybe in the fermenter: "dry blossoming" as opposed to "dry hopping"...
  5. Can we do noon? Just realized I've got a dentist appt at 2 and I don't want to push it time-wise.
  6. Also, this just in: the front of the house will be run by a kid named Rufio. And the menu will have bangerang-ers and mash.
  7. I'm not much of a potato chip fan, to be honest, but every time I go to Naan and Beyond, I find myself getting the chips and loving them. Ranging from crunchy to downright chewy, you can tell that they were fried on the premesis, by a real person and not a machine. Pretty spicy, with undercurrents of egg and potato.
  8. That's a negative, ghost rider. Naan and Beyond, here I come.
  9. I was up in Baltimore this past weekend and grabbed a late lunch at Rub (They insist on capitalizing the entire word, but I will refrain from doing so). Although it has all the trappings of a chain, it's not, and the BBQ isn't bad at all. Got the two-meat plate with Brisket and Ribs...the Brisket was the winner, but the ribs weren't bad, just not great. For $13, the two-meat plate came with your choice of two sides: I got the corn pudding (excellent texture, nice and spicy) and the macaroni and cheese (maybe not the best choice, but not bad). Anybody else been here and have thoughts? If I was back up in the area I'd probably stop by, but other BBQ recommendations in B-more are always welcome.
  10. Yes [sadly]. To try and put the train back on the tracks: it'll be very interesting to see where Hartzer takes the VIRIDIAN menu. Here's hoping he can rescue the ship before it goes under.
  11. I didn't catch too many of the names of things as they were brought to the table, but I think everything was from the regular menu, so I'm using the online menu to try and figure out what we had. The bulgogi (bulgo-ki on the menu?) and the spicy chicken dish (dak-jeem?) were my faves. The dumplings were good but I only had a couple so I'd definitely want to give those another try: the pan-fried one I had was really crispy and damn good. The seafood pancake (pa jun) didn't really do it for me, but it wasn't bad. Thanks to all the organizers, as if it hasn't been said enough. I'll definitely be back to try this place out in a smaller group: I live about a block away.
  12. I've seen it at the Brick in the last year or two but haven't checked for it lately. Birreria Paradiso might have it: they had the Hitachino White on tap for a while if memory serves. As far as retail, give Chevy Chase liquors a call, and if they don't have it, try Total Wine.
  13. Fwiw, I tried the peking duck at Nooshi tonight since I was stuck in the office for most of the evening, and I generally enjoy most of their stuff. It's bad (dry meat, pancakes and scallions were useless). And it's $13.75 after tax for half a duck. I've never had any of the ones outside of the city, but now I think I need to make a field trip to one of the aforementioned ones.
  14. The Toronado outdoes most beer bars in this country, imho, especially in the ambience/character area. Possible exceptions for O'Briens in San Diego, Horse Brass in Portland OR, and maybe one or two others that I'm forgetting. When we were there, a lady came around with a Tamale cart at like 1am. Perfect drunk food. I'm quite jealous that you were there for that festival, although I'll agree I have some reservations about a festival where the beers average over 10%. I've been meaning to get to the Alaskan barleywine festival for a few years now, but add that reservation about drinking barleywines all day and then trying to find your hotel in the bitter cold. One of these days...
  15. Nice. Restarting firefox (something I rarely if ever do) did the trick: quoting now works in FF for me.
  16. Ideally, this will be fixed in FF, and then we can all multi-quote in perpetuity.
  17. It works in IE but not in firefox. Details: 1) click on the "Quote" button of the post(s) you want to quote 2) click on "Add Reply" below posts 3.IE) the form is displayed, with each post you selected quoted 3.FF) the form is displayed, with nothing quoted
  18. Wow. I've never had a bad server at BP, but granted I don't go there as often as I'd like. Still, it's a much larger list of beers at BP than Reef and a more quickly rotating tap list, so you gotta cut them some slack there. And seriously, I don't think I've ever had a server anywhere that knew what kind of hops are in each beer. I think I'd be a little afraid of them if they did: that's some hardcore beer-nerd knowledge. And regardless, the tap list at BP has a decent level of detail on each beer, if I remember correctly. That doesn't excuse poor service, but it means you still get information about the beers if your server happens to be new.
  19. Thanks for all the recommendations, guys...am negotiating with the other gift-givers to see if we can wrange up enough dough to do the Charleston, but otherwise we'll probably go with either Pazo or Timothy Dean. And thanks to Don for making the subforum for the Bmore/Annandale stuff...I'm sure it will get to the point where this question doesn't need to be asked anymore, people can just go to that forum and do their own digging.
  20. If you're experiencing the "login" problem, try deleting your existing cookies and logging in once more...I was seeing the issue yesterday afternoon, and I deleted all of my cookies around 8:30pm. Haven't seen the problem since (although I'll post here if it recurs) bookluvingbabe, what problem are you referring to? the login thing?
  21. Count me in depending on the specific date.
  22. Hey guys, I've got a couple friends who recently got engaged, and a buddy and I are talking about buying them a gift certificate to a nice restaurant....but they live in Baltimore. I perused the Baltimore Dining Guide and come up with the following top-runners: Pazo Saffron Bicycle LP Steamers looks awesome but I don't think it qualifies in the "romantic" category (and Charleston is out of our budget, sadly). Most of the threads on the above three are pretty sparse and/or old...anybody have any recent recommendations?
