  1. I'm going to a Kristin Hersh instore at Crooked Beat at 6 - I could meet up around 5.30 for a quick drink - maybe Bourbon?
  2. anyone up for the oyster happy hour at Hank's today?
  3. We were in Borough Market the week before Christmas and it was amazing. Cold but festive with lots of mulled wine and the locals picking out Christmas trees. A food lovers dream.....must have been at least 10 individual cheese makers there with their cheese (Quenby Stilton and Gorwydd Caerphilly were my two favorites), in addition to several other cheesemakers, delicious breads and pastries, loads of prepared foods, oysters.....and Neals Yard Dairy just around the corner.....I was in heaven!!
  4. at the risk of getting punched by someone how about Tuesday? I know some folks can't make it and maybe I should move this to the whim thread but I'm definitely free on Tuesday, just not sure what I'll do yet.....any takers?
  5. I agree completely! As someone who both works at and attends a lot of concerts its making my nights out much more comfortable.
  6. I've been and continue to be out of town - will pick up in Jan if thats ok
  7. ha, ha! Your Mom sounds like she has similar tastes to my parents who I will be spending this weekend in London with....so I'll add to this request The North Sea sounds good - thanks Joe
  8. Went back again last night. They have menus now with 4 or 5 pizzas with specific toppings (e.g., smoked mushroom, smoked mozz and smoked bacon - YUMMY!!) and also offer beer by the pitcher (not sure if this is new or not. Prices all very specific and laiid out on the menu. We had a lot of fun - the pizzas were excellent, the service was good, the kids were able to roam around after eating their pizza
  9. Um, ok, I'm glad your friends treated you to dinner but my specific circumstances are different....this is for people who I know are going to Maestro in the near future....I'd like a gift cert for them to take some of the sting out of the final bill....I'd also like to be able to order it over the phone without paying a $15 fee for the privelige of doing so.....
  10. Wow, has anyone ever tried to get a gift certificate for someone at Maestro? Not the easiest or most customer friendly of processes. First off they won't take your cc # over the phone due to 'security issues' but they will happily fax you a form where you can fill out your cc info and fax it back them....yeah, MUCH more secure Second, there's a $15 'processing fee' associated with getting a gift cert. Now I know dinner at Maestro ain't cheap but this still seems a bit steep to me.
  11. Finally got around to trying Comet last night - I think its pretty good. I had a red pizza w/ melted onions and smoked mushrooms. One thing that stuck me was that the tomato sauce had a nice little bit of heat to it, as if there is some kind of pepper in it. Thin crust, nicely charred....my one quibble would be that for an extra $1 per topping I would have expected more than 6 slices of smoked mushrooms on my pie, exactly 1 slice for each of the six pieces. Washed it all down with a pint of Allagash White.
  12. Anyone interested in grabbing a drink at Firefly around 5.30ish today (Tues)?
  13. I don't get back to DC until Jan 1 but you guys should get together that date anyway....
  14. I can't make it those dates (will be in London on the 18th and Dublin on the 20th - yay!! ) but am a Ch Ch neighborhoodie and would be up for future events....
  15. Searched but did not find a thread for this restaurant. We have acquired a gift certificate for this place somewhere along the way and need to use it - any Rockweillers been there? If so, your thoughts? Its in Bethesda. Thanks http://www.neworleansbistro.org/
  16. we were very pleased by our effort this year and judging by the satisfied smiles at the table our guests were fairly happy as well..... corn bread white winter vegetable soup corn souffle oyster, leek and mushroom stuffing regular stuffing parsnip, potato and carrot gratin french beans w/ pine nuts a a little lemon zest mashed potatos port wine, fig and cranberry sauce turkey frango mint chocolate cake
  17. stopped by the Blue Duck Tavern early on Thursday evening with kids in tow - I have to say I was quite impressed with the place, in terms of decor, service and food - the place is so sleek and chic that when you walk in you do worry that they'll be too cool for school but the service was just great from start to finish we grazed through the menu....fresh oysters were excellent, marrow bone was very good, fries were extremely tasty, biscuits reminded me that RTCs are basically impossible to beat and the black feather chicken is indeed succulent, moist and everything that chicken should be but so often is not they've realized their error with the Chimay pricing....its now $11 a bottle which is still pretty reasonable for 750ml....I went with a glass of Acacia pinot instead
  18. to this date, I look as driving in Naples unscathed as one of my singular achievements! glad you liked it!
  19. right now: Dogfish Head Shelter Pale Ale last night: finished with 21 yr old Bushmills and some 18yr old Glenlivet - both lovely - Bushmills probbaly had the edge
  20. given that this is a semi-technical thread I thought i'd ask a question that has been bugging me for a while does anyone else have trouble using dr.com with safari (apples internet browser) it routinely crashes when I am on DR but no other site.....just curious
  21. it never ceases to amaze me how worked up people get over Bucks! Is it expensive? Sure....do they run out of menu items....yes, but as someone pointed out, inventory management is a tricky business in a small business that can dramatically affect your bottom line. If you read the thread on Bucks, many of the reviews are positive....and many of the negatives are from people who have never even dined there....this old canard that the place has been trashed by everyone on DR.com/egullet wherever but Sietsema still likes it is irritating and plain wrong.....has everything I've head there over the course of 5/6 visits been sublime....no, but alot of it has.....her soft shell crabs are amazing, the steak can be fantastic (although overpriced at $38) as is the home-made mozz salad and the desserts... If it was that bad, people wouldn't go....other restaurants have failed in that area, while she is opening another one.....if you think its going to be that bad, don't go... oops, and I just realized that BAR wanted everyone to move on
  22. maybe this was the reason behind your conversation but the best peking duck used to be at Dino's, when it was Yanyu - I think they still may make it at Spices I misss Yanyu - I ate there 4 or 5 times and rarely was anything less than delicious Theres a place in Van Ness that always has some kid of peking duck promo going on
