  1. Friday: Blacksalt. Their rockfish entree is one of the tastiest dishes I'vehad in a while. Sunday: American Flatbread. Very underwhelming. A bruschetta special seemed out of place in March and inconsistent with their shop local philosophy (unless someone in VA has mastered the art of growing tomatoes in Winter). Pizza was ok but nothing special. I would take 2 Amy's or Comet over this any day.
  2. hmmm, no personal chef recommendations out there? I'm looking for either a personal chef or a small catering company to put together a nice meal for my wifes upcoming birthday. I'm having a small get together at our house for about 12 people and don't want anyone to have to think about cooking/cleaning. Awaiting a quote from 3Citron whose online menu seems interesting/appetizing but happy to receive recommendations from other folks. Thanks
  3. saw it yesterday and meant to post - another hopefully great addition to that neighborhood - DC has undergone quite the transformation in the last 5-10 years for beer lovers from just Brickskellar to RFD (admittedly far from perfect), Birreria, Beck, Rustico, the Reef etc etc
  4. had a great lunch at Oyamel yesterday - despite Andres success and high profile it almost seems to fly under the radar a little their tacos run from $3-4 each and while thats more expensive than Taqueria Nacionale you're eating in much nicer surrounding and they taste just great, I had a wild mushroom taco with shallots and garlic, and amzing fish taco with practically a filler of fish in there and a nice pork taco would love to go back soon and be able to imbibe a little more than water service was outstanding
  5. aaah, I Ricchi!! Against my advice my company had a disastrous Holiday lunch there. Oily waiters telling us our apps would be served family style which turned out to be code for miniscule portions of two apps instead of a proper sized single app, ruthlessly pushing one entree they clearly wanted to shift above all others, opening as many bottles of mineral water as possible etc etc.....I believe it turned out at something like $75 per person when all was said and done - if only I could have been given $75 in cash I could have gone to Vidalia, or Firefly, or anyhere but I Ricchi...
  6. Have not been but its received one or two positive mentions on our neighborhood listserve (not necessarily a good thing - some folks on there love Arucola!) I too, am going to try to swing by as they deserve support for setting up shop in a nontraditional part of town.
  7. Yay! A new season of the UK version of Kitchen Nightmares just started tonight on BBC America.....first ep looks like a doozy so far!!
  8. Any Green Bay suggestions? I'll be there for 24 hrs on Sunday/Monday and assuming I don't die of the cold or the heavy drinking at the game are there places folks woud recommend for drinks/food/fun either prior to or after the game? GO PACKERS!!!!
  9. We enjoyed a 1998 H. Billiot Reserve that we picked up from Joe a year or so ago. Outstanding champagne.
  10. Tune in on Sunday, November 18th at 9pm ET/PT, as Symon takes on Chef Ricky Moore of Agaria restaurant in Washington, DC, in his first battle as Iron Chef. Will he live up the title? Watch and see in this special Thanksgiving-themed episode.
  11. darn, I had a bunch of thai basil that I had not gotten around to harvesting on a brighter note, I did harvest 4 of the cutest pumpkins you've ever seen on Sunday and the kids had a whale of a time carving them....next year I think I'm going to go all out and try and grow a monster pumpkin!!
  12. filipino chicken stew w/ pepper leaves for dinner then baked a lovely peach cobbler and our first ever bread pudding!
  13. so how is everyones harvest - despite being neglected for two dry weeks while I was away I'm doing quite nicely with a variety of yummy heirlooms
  14. 2005 Lusco do Mino Albarino 1998 Bodegas Muga Prado Enea Gran Reserva 2003 Artadi Pago Viejos 1994 Bodegas Ismael Arroyo Valsotillo Gran Reserva 2002 Bodegas Y Venedos 'Alion' 2001 Aalto 2003 Bodegas Y Vinedos Pintia 2001 Cims de Porrera 'Classic' 2004 Mas Doix Costers de Vinas Viejas .....burp....
  15. Had a couple of nice meals in Seattle this week. Shiro's for sushi and finally got to have a sandwich at Salumi which was transporting. It was a pork cheek sandwich (special of the day) with a few grilled onions and a little garlic and parsley spread - one of the best tasting sambos I've ever had and worth being 20 minutes late to a meeting for!!* * we got there at 11.40 and there were already 50 people in line..... Dinner Tuesday was at a little unpretentious hole in the wall burger joint in Kirkland called The Slip - good beers (Hales) on tap too!!
  16. had the lickety-split with friends last friday - everything was really excellent - I had a morel soup and a chicken confit sandwich....others had cockles and mussels (a generous bowl) and oyster po' boys the one minor quibble I wold have is that it wasn't very lickety-split - we waited a loooong time for food to come out and in between courses.....2 hours from start to finish....we weren't in any particular rush but thats a little long for a two course lunch and yes I did see Cathal advertising Kerrygold in this months F&W - nice to see them (Kerrygold) finally trying to use one of Irelands greatest culinary exports (Armstrong)
  17. yeah, that was, uuuuh, wild - where the hell did they find those people?
  18. I'm probably gonna swing by there today....will report back I had the meatloaf last week.....good but not in the same league as the burger.....
  19. Heres another question - I picked up some basil plants, including thai basil plants at DeBaggio a few weeks ago. The Thai basil plants already seem to be trying to flower, despite not being very big - is this normal? - should I pinch back like with genovese basil?
  20. lettuce is bolting so..... Arugula Gazpacho, topped w/ diced roasted red pepper (surprisingly good and not as bitter as I would have thought although there was loads of non argugula veggies in there!!) Arugula, Radichio, Feta, Medjoool date salad, w Lemon dressing no jokes about arugula ice cream!!
  21. Calvert Woodley has canned six-packs of Dales Pale Ale. Had never heard of it before but I have to say it kicks ass. Theres almost a cognitive dissonance in raising a can of beer to your lips and being rewarded with such a flavorful beer!!
  22. Oh. My. God. At the risk of being thought of as some PR flack for Taqueria, you absolutely, positively, definitely HAVE to go there next Monday for the burger special. Having had the burger at Central and here I can say that at $5.50 w/ some fries, the Taqueria burger more than holds its own against Central AND you can eat three of em for the price of one at Central!! Swell meat never tasted so good!
