  1. they had an ad in this weeks Northwest Current offering 15% off any reg priced wine upon mention of the ad
  2. this summer I built a 'cellar' underneath the basement stairs - looks great and the basement stays fairly cool even in summertime - I guess I should put a thermometer in there to see what the temp fluctuation is
  3. Trianon is my favorite place for pizza another restaurant we enjoyed was Da Dora - some info here - sometime very charming about strolling up a residential cobbled street on a warm evening, past families getting ready to eat or relaxing after eating and then you find this unassuming little place with great food http://viatraveldesign.com/journal/archive...09/da_dora.html and the late RW Apple had this to say about it....didn;t know this at the time - just googled it "Dora's spaghetti con vongole sets the standard for the whole town. It is made with dime-size clams, called vongole verace, colored a beautiful brown with cream stripes, plus olive oil, garlic and gobs of parsley. The pasta is dressed when it is blazingly hot, which helps it to drink in all the fruitiness of the oil, the brininess of the clams and the herby freshness of the parsley. Ecco! A cliche becomes a classic. I kept ordering things, because I was alone and the plates headed elsewhere looked so good. Each dish was a study in glorious simplicity: a little heap of deep-fried calamari, flavored with a few drops of juice from a sweet-tart Sorrento lemon; four grilled scampi, their long, charred shells lending them an evocative seaside taste and aroma; a delicate little fish from Capri called, I think, a pezzogna, cooked in a spicy bouillon called acqua pazza (crazy water); and a plate of wild strawberries with perfect lemon sorbet. The waiter wrote out the name of the fish for me; it tasted like orata or another of the breams, but I can find no reference to it anywhere, not even in Alan Davidson's encyclopedic ''Mediterranean Seafood.''
  4. we'll bring some kid-sized non-sparkling and some individual-sized Perrier
  5. I hear the oyster po' boy calling me for lunch today.....
  6. actually, this might make it more likely that we could swing by (the fact that I'm not working, not the fact that Daniel won't be there!!!) - question - is Kolumbia non-smoking?
  7. Nice space, great staff, good to meet Danny again, only had a beer (Victory prima pils) so can't comment on the wine. The complimentary caramel popcorn is a fantastic match with the pils by the way. I was on my way elsewhere so only had the soup sampler, 4 'shots' of soup....tomato beer soup and mushroom veloute were both very tasty, lobster chowder and oxtail soup didn't quite do it for me
  8. grabbed a late lunch there today, had the half oyster po'boy which was um, huge....don't know how someone could eat a full one....not bad....8-10 oysters on the roll, decent 'not so hard as to make your mouth bleed' roll, the accompanying sauce was a little bland but all in all I think I will return fairly regularly for this sandwich....beats anything else in the area and only a few bucks more..... $9.90 w/ tax
  9. I'm going to swing by PS7 for a drink and check things out...should be there by 5.15 if anyone would like to join me
  10. They repainted the outside this week so we might be getting closer - I did hear another rumour regarding an opening date but was so spectacularly wrong the last time I'm keeping my mouth shut.....
  11. Randomly pulled a 2003 Tinto Pesquera from the cellar last night. Fiendishly difficult to uncork...the damn thing just wouldn't budge.....ended up dismembering the cork and pushing the remnants into the bottle and then decanting/straining....but worth the hassle...wonderful fruit, lush wine...
  12. I too, am salivating at the prospect of all that charcuterie but am also knee deep in diapers so will have to skip this one.
  13. I have the strategic advantage of two beautiful kids and grandparents in Ireland who are highly motivated to see them!! So at least 3 or 4 times a year my folks arrive with (i kid you not) an entire suitcase (sometimes more) full of chocolate (and Lyons tea)
  14. AYCE of about 25 differetn varieties of oysters, AYCD award-winning white wines (as judged by an Old Ebbittt Grill panel of experts) and beer.....some passed oyster appetizers
  15. based on a review of the current cadbury inventory in my house, the Moro's, Twirls, Time Outs, Dairy Milks and Golden Crisps are all made in Ireland (Coolock, to be precise).....and the Time Outs have Arabic script on them which may be they are marketed, but not made in the Arab World.....I need to get a life and go to bed
  16. well IMHO the best Cadburys is manufactured in Ireland, but its what I grew up with so its not too surprising Different HOs are what make this site so interesting anyway BUT Irish Cadburys and English Cadburys IS different, just as US Cadburys is also different (and very very yucky)......the recipe in Ireland is different because we never liked the English recipe.....burn everything British except their coal....... and certain Cadbury products (e.g., the Moro bar) are ONLY made in Ireland.....now a fried Moro bar, that would be something
  17. Congratulations!! Having had two preemies at Sibley you can rest easy knowing they are in good hands....can't say enough good things about the nursing staff there
  18. I would urge folks to read smokeys post again....unless I'm sorely mistaken, I **THINK** this is his tongue-in-cheek reply to Michaels tongue-in-cheek response....scalding showers, blood running in the halls, firing the entire female staff etc etc.....not sure he wants anyone fired......
  19. I will briefly add to the massed chorus of praise for RTC - we ate there with my parents Thursday night - the sausage biscuits really are all that - they have to be tasted to be believed - I went for a NY strip which was excellent, several had the crab royale which also received the thumbs up - my wife did not care for the chicken so much but the staff were very good about taking it back desserts are very good, in particular the chocolate trifle which I had to arm wrestle my daughter for and an amazing peach tart of some type which a very crisp sweet crust space is beautiful....very classy....service top notch Thanks to Michael for creating such a great dining option so close to our house!
  20. 6 of us had a nice meal at Blacks last night - I had never been in its previous incarnation so can't comment on the scale of the changes but can say that its a handsome room....didn't find noise to be that much of a problem service was excellent.....gracious and friendly we started with a dozen oysters, a mix of malpeques, blue points and pickle points out of which the pickle points were the clear winner....just delicious.... we shared a variety of apps and small plates - they had a fantastic small plate special of seared lamb tenderloin that was delicious and a steal at $4.....the corn cakes w/ green tomato jam were different and very good and the fried oyster was decent but maybe I was expecting more based on other raves....the scallop w/ pea puree was excellent and brough back memories of the pea soup @ Citronelle I had the scallops as an entree and they were excellent - beautifully seared, and served w/ garlic mashed potatoes and swiss chard w/ the added bonus of some shrimp nestling underneath it all.....others had the cod w/ chorizo...spicy, earthy very good....the seared halibut w/ vanilla sauce......interesting taste but would have been too sweet for me as an entree, and the tuna dish someone also had the tuna carpaccio which was the one dissapointment of the night - the tuna itself was excellent but was overwhelmed by the various other accoutrements that were sprinkled atop it - a definite case of less being more for this dish the 6 of us were sufficiently ful that we only split one dessert, the trio of chocolate - it was fairly good with the silky chocolate panna cotta being pronouned everyones favorite and the collapsed chocolate cake and ice cream sandwichs generating less excitement all it all a good meal.....worked out to about $100 pp incl tax and tip including about $130 of wine, 6 cocktails, and bottomless pours of sparking water (which I love!) which I thought was quite reasonable
