  1. Not sure that I agree with you that email is less efficient but thats neither here nor there. C'est fini......in the interests of bringing this to some sort of closure myself and Julia (the GM at NB) have spoken since the Sietsema posting and the attendant brouhaha here at DR. The details of our conversation are unimportant, what is important is that someone at NB acknowledged my complaint, which is all I ever wanted in the first place.
  2. I wonder if theres a correlation between liking good food and liking good music.....I'm seeing more and more familiar looking screen names from the 9.30 club board on here in recent weeks. and thats great news about a second Birchmere.....my aching bones find it harder and harder to stand for hours at gigs
  3. But it was the greatest salad you've ever seen, you had to see it to understand!!!! Public trashing? Hey, I gave them a chance to respond to my complaint by contacting them privately and they blew me off. The whole incident yanked alot of chains for me.....truth in advertising, different waiters implementing different rules in front of customers, blatant hostility when we politely inquired as to why some were getting magic salad and some weren't, whoever was sorta in charge completely ducking us when we wanted to talk to him, and then not following up....... ....and thanks to the folks who fairly accurately presented my side of the story in absentia
  4. had a busy day at work so only realizing now that you guys picked up on this - haven't had a chance to read what other posters are saying but wanted to reply quickly - a vendetta, no, not really but given that they can't be arsed replying to a personal email I sent them detailing what I consider to be a horrible customer service experience I had no qualms in submitting an abbreviated version to Tom I'm done now......there are plenty of great restaurants in the area that deserve my $$ more than NB
  5. Yes, the website does not make the distinction. And even if they have updated the hard copy menu I still think its a silly exclusion because it essentially takes the 'deal' out of the lunch on the run menu. It also seems strange that you can order a $10 tomato soup and a pasta but not a $10 tomato salad and a pasta. Oh well, whatever.......and none of this in any way excuses or absolves them for the conduct of the waiter or their refusal to reply to the personal email I sent the restaurant. ETA: this was written before I came across the discussions on Toms chat
  6. grilled pork chops w/ a brandy/apricot glaze grilled shrimp w/ a penzeys spice rub tomato/basil/mozz salad grilled corn raspberry peach cobbler made w/ raspberries picked at Butlers on Sunday
  7. funny stuff - in general I agree with you that the staffing is woefully inadequate, although we have had luck with Kevin at Tenleytown....not sure if he's got any formal quals but he's definitely more engaged and informed than the others
  8. I was on a really tight schedule in Seattle but believe me, I felt like impaling myself on the Space Needle when I went by Salumi the morning I was leaving to discover they didn't open until noon or something like that......they took pity on me and gave me a few scraps of meat but I didn't get to revel in the glory of cured meats like you did
  9. my wife picked up a few cheese the other day at Whole Foods Tenleytown - she didn't think the garrotxa looks great but queried the cheesemonger and was told it 'would be fine when she took the wrapper off' - as soon as I saw it I knew we were in trouble - I like garrotxa but this had the consistency and mouthfeel and taste of sawdust......the poor thing had dried out and atrophied to a shadow of what a cheese should be
  10. LOVE Father Ted!! Exactly. Someone needs to let them know this info was being given out freely to anyone who called Eve and asked.....so the 'crashers' had no idea they were crashing...
  11. another chat excerpt.... Washington, D.C.: Tom--Do you even know what you're talking about? When I called the Eamonn's, they said they opened for business on Monday. Also, it's on King, not Pitt. Tom Sietsema: Oops! I gave the address for Restaurant Eve. My apologies. Eammon's is indeed on King Street. And two owners of the newcomer told me TODAY was the official launch date. (Sounds like you were one of the naughty crashers ...)
  12. Yes, they told me over the phone and in person at the bar on Friday. Soft, friend and family or DR.com world exclusive were not mentioned with this information. When I posted that it would be opening on Monday at 5 I received several PMs indicating that other folks thought it was a restricted opening so on the chance that the staff were mistakenly telling people I took the info out of my post.....but I still showed up on Monday and I didn't see anyone on staff there the slightest bit irritated that Rockweillers were there
  13. we've had the five and the nine - the five is more than filling - the nine is great but you do end up feeling a little like the guy in Monty Python depends on what your threshold is for overconsumption on the day
  14. Adrian Higgins chat on WaPo.com today featured lots of posters complaining about their tomato yields this year. I too, have had a dissapointing summer of tomato growing but had put it down to other factors, such as gettinmg them outside too late, not spending enough time in the garden my letting the cherry tomato plants overwhelm the others.....maybe my soil was 'tired' (been growing tomatos in the same plot for 3/4 years now)....wonder how other folks are doing - I have hundreds of cherries and a few cherokee purples ripening but thats about it......I planted purple tomatillos and the plants are developing beautiful purple-veined husks but they seem to be hollow.... how are other folks faring this year?
  15. a lovely addition to the casual dining scene in Alexandria - fish and chips were very nice - we tried the cod and the ray - liked the dipping sauces, esp the curry and the chesapeake....the onion rings need a little work though....but I'm sure they'll fix that soon enough nice to see all the Irish chocolate, tea bags, biscuits etc and a fridge full of Club Orange and Rock Shandy!!!!! and triple extra bonus points for the great music being played.....The The and U2 to name but a few - made for a very pleasant soundtrack to the meal nice also to put a few more faces to names....
  16. We've been wanting to try Notti Bianche for the longest time - I remember being horribly dissapointed when the DR dinner there was cancelled. We finally got a chance to try it out today....nothing fancy....just their 'lunch on the run' menu, and while the food was good, the whole experience was ruined by appalling service that when we tried to rectify it revealed some serious internal communication problems at NB. Lunch on the run is billed as "any salad, any soup, and any 1/2 pasta for $15". We got their right at noon and were the only people in the place for a good 15-20 minutes. Once we indicated a preference for non-sparking water, our waiter took it upon himself to assume we didn't want any wine or other drinks. My wife tried ordering the tomato salad as part of her lunch only to be informed that the tomato salad, despite being a salad, could not be ordered as part of the LOTR menu. We were mildly dissapointed and intended pointing out the discrepancy between what the menu said we could order and what we were allowed order while leaving. I had the tomato soup (very nice) and a nice pasta dish w/ guanciole, anchovies, capers....salty, but then its meant to be. My wife settled for the mixed greens and a very good linguine w/ 2 huge and very tasty shrimp. Imagine our surprise when two ladies seated next to us ordered the tomato salad from the same waiter and was not told it was not a part of the LOTR menu. We started chattting to them and said that we hadn't been allowed order it so when the waiter came back we mentioned it to him. He turned on us and said, "OK, would you like to tell her she can't have her salad". I was gobsmacked. Then he made a big show of saying, "Its her birthday. Do you mind if I let her have it for her birthday". By now, we were kinda pissed but it only got worse. The dining room started filling up and the young maiitre d'/manager started pitchhing in a taking orders and at another table next to us, a table full of people all ordered the tomato salad as part of the LOTR menu. As we received our check we asked to speak to a manager.....at this stage it was more about finding out what the actual policy was because depending on who was taking your order you either were or were not going to get the friggin tomato salad. The waiter took away our check and the minutes proceeded to tick by.....tick tock tick tock tick tock.......after a good 5 minutes and with the manager skulking around at the front of the restaurant we decided we had better approach him. Even at this stage he seemed totally unsure what to do, he started off the conversation staying, yes, the waiter was right but ended by saying no, he was wrong. The waiter finally dropped us off our check at the hostess stand, nonchalantly adding that we should come back sometime........HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! He was a comedian as well as being a lousy rude waiter!! Given the recent conversations on here regarding two-tier dining and special accomodations for certain patrons, it was certainly on display today at NB! Horrible.
  17. With our son hitting the three week mark we decided it was time to bring him to his first restaurant and we wanted it to be a good one. Finally had the pleasure of trying the Lickety Split menu at lunch yesterday and even during a RW this has to be one of the best deals in the city. If only Eve was closer to downtown. I had a stinging nettle soup and a bacon, egg and cheese salad, my wife had the risotto and the Irish BLT - all 4 were fantastic and an absolute steal at 13.50 pp
  18. well it looks like the service problems we encountered on our last visit there have not been resolved - if anything they've worsened we had a $50 gift cert to Zengo thats been sitting around for a few months so we gave it a shot for lunch today - big mistake - honestly the staff seem mildly medicated - they float around the place in a daze, more or less oblivious to the customers needs.....drink orders not taken for 10 mins, entrees arriving 45 seconds after appetizers....and this was all on their 'menu del dia' 3 course lunch - how hard can it be?? I could go into more details but don't want to relive the experience any more than I have to avoid...
  19. when I was living in san fran 94, sharing a 1 bedroom apt w/ 7 other irish students, the tipple of choice was Meister Brau....$4.99 for a 12 pack of cans Stella (not that Stella) and Saqqara in Egypt......after a long day at the office an ice cold Stella went down a treat
