  1. ...as is Bucks (although it fails your across the river criteria)
  2. I went back again today. I may be facing a major yuca fry addiction over the next few months. Those things are so damn good. Had a beef and a pork taco today and happy to report the quantity control problem they had on day one seems to have been resolved. Service was much much smoother today as well so they are clearly getting things figured out. No special today, they said they'd have one tomorrow.
  3. We're swimming in arugula and spinach right now. Decided that growing from seed was too much hassle this year and am off to DeBaggio on Friday afternoon to pick up some tomatoes, eggplants, basil varieties etc to round out the summer crops
  4. Not physically in Johnny's....if you walk along Johnny's patio towards the office building entrance, its a seperate little storefront on your left....but its hard to see from the street.....and yes, I probably mucked up the spelling!!
  5. Given the lack of decent, reasonably-priced lunch options in the vicinity of Union Station I was excited to try this place out. All things considered I think this place has a lot of potential. There were a couple of first day teething problems but its cheap and most of what I had tasted great. Tacos run either $2.25 (chicken and pork) or $2.50 (beef and fish). Sides including beans, yuca fries and a few others seem to be about $1.50. There will be a daily 'American' special - today it was Chicken Pot Pie for $4. So you can get in and out of these for as much or as little as you want. The yuca fries were excellent, crispy on the outside and gooey warm goodness on the inside. They reminded me a little of the fries at Blue Duck Tavern. The fish tacos were also good, 3 large (maybe even too large) chunks of fried fish battling for space on a tiny soft taco, with some shredded cabbage and a mystery sauce. It was harder to evaluate the pork taco as the amount of pork approximated what I'd expect to get on a pork dish at Minibar as one of my 35 courses! There are also 3 self serve salsas, tomato, chile and green....none super spicy but all quite tasty and flavorful. So all in all a promising start. Service was slow for fast food (15-20 minutes), I ended up with two fish tacos instead of the one I ordered and there wasn't a lot of pork to be seen on my pork taco but I'm sure all these things will be remedied as they get up to speed.
  6. We had an absolutely wonderful meal at Cityzen on Saturday evening. This is one restaurant that absolutely lives up to expectations. Stellar service in lots of little different ways including a wonderful sommelier and you could tell they were really paying attention - based on my wifes request for one dish, they proactively came to her and offered to change a second dish, excellent food (and easily the best cheese cart in DC, stocked with lots of great cheese and served with knowledge and enthusiasm by our waiter). We went with the 5 course tasting menu and enjoyed (don't have the menu so these descriptions don't do full justice to all the ingredients) lightly seared tuna w/ crispy shitake mushrooms, shoat belly, soft shell crab on a bed of citrus fruits and rhubarb, beef tenderloin, the aforementioned cheese and AN AMAZING chocolate chip cookie dough souffle. And then add in two amuses at the beginning and at least two sweeter treats at the end. Fantastic stuff. The only mild surprise was that such a well-stocked bar didn't have any cachaca as my wife wanted a Caipirinha for a pre-dinner cocktail (although they did offer to make one using rum). Easily one of the most enjoyable experiences I've had in a DC restaurant in quite a while. And a beautiful room with soaring ceilings. Now I get why people are so enthused about the $50 bar/lounge special!!
  7. a couple of different Baltic beers that I managed to 'win' at my daughters school auction - quite good actually!
  8. When we went a few weeks ago, we had the chefs tasting. Everything was excellent including the aforementioned lobster ravioli and an amazing porcini mushroom risotto. There was also a great dish with salted cod croquettes and squid....
  9. looks like my spinach and lettuce seedlings survived the freezing temps! Although they are cold weather plants I did cover them on Fri, Sat and Sun as a precaution
  10. only getting around to reading this now - what a great book - very thought provoking (as are many of the posts in this thread).
  11. Its a wonderful wonderful area and a food lovers dream. We were at a wedding there in 2005 and were blown away by the quality of the food and the pride even the smallest places have in what they serve. We were only in San Seb for a day but made time for lunch at Arzak - superb. We also spent some time in Getaria, a little village to the west of SS, featuring lots of great little seafood restaurants - nothing too fancy, just good grilled fish. The tapas/pintxos were excellent in both SS and Bilbao - the Casa Viejo in Bilbao is an old square with 10-15 different tapas bars. We also enjoyed the cheap local wine Txakoli, nothing fancy but great on a hot summers day.
  12. Chubby's made for a nice post-Gettsyburg lunch yesterday. What we liked: the tasty, meaty crab soup the onion rings the pulled pork the brisket Smithwicks in a bottle What we didn't: We thought the ribs were a little on the dry side We'd definitely go back the next time we are in the area
  13. We're heading up to Gettysburg tomorrow with my parents and the kids. Any suggestions for decent places to eat. Gettysbrew appears to be either closed or on the market again and the number has been disconnected (and judging by the comments on a beer review site it may be just as well). Appalachian Brewing Company is closed on Mondays. It doesn't have to be a brewpub, just somewhere delivering better than tourist fare. Thanks
  14. Picked up a dozen assorted donuts this morning. They were still hot when I got to work and judging by the rapturous reception they received people seemed to like em! Some pretty crazy flavours/toppings available....but I guess thats the point...
  15. Thanks Jake....an unbelievable result....now if only the rugby boys hadn't gifted Italy that last minute try to hand the 6 nations to France.
  16. yesterday: green chicken curry w/ okra, eggplant, peas and peppers today: pork and chicken adobo both were delicious
  17. the above points are all very good, esp the year round population observation Is your friend a baker already? The lifestyle can be pretty tough for the uninitiated, particularly in a small business setting (my cousin owns a bakery in a small town and while she loves it she also works an ungodly amount of hours)
  18. Made this beef stew yesterday. Humdinger of a recipe! Tasted great, sopped up the extra sauce with a little bread.
  19. I snuck out from a meeting Thursday to grab lunch at the bar. Had the burger, it was nice but as LaShanta noted quite a messy proposition to eat. Service was great. As I was eating I noticed a bottle of liquor called Vieux Marc Chateneuf de Pape. As CdP is one of my favorite wines, I was curious as to what it was. The bartender immediately asked if I'd like a sample and one of the managers came over to give me a little tutorial on what it was. (for those of you like me who haven't heard of this, its made from fermented grape stems, "like a French grappa" I was told, very limited production, I think he mentioned 200 cases a year). When I googled it later I also found out that it features in a Picasso painting. Anyways, its a lovely little drink, light and fruity and very warming on a cold day like Thursday.
