  1. Try Sur la Table for European-style jars. I've been getting the Ball Platinum jars at Strosniders in Bethesda. The Silver Spring location has canning supplies, but it's a smaller selection.
  2. split pea soup with kielbasa parker house rolls from Woodmoor pastry shop - very disappointing pumpkin bread with cream cheese frosting apple cider
  3. I definitely agree. Unfortunately many of the ethnic places seem to be succumbing to the Sysco-fication of the world. As for your ETA...I don't know if it's a dumbing down so much as diminishing returns. I can imagine it's much, much easier to operate with a corporate structure propping you up, especially in smaller towns.
  4. I disagree that modern chefs have to compete with Applebee's (or Cracker Barrel, or Chili's, or or or). They are marketing to the people that are interested in dining as entertainment, have the disposable income & time, and the "refined" taste to eat there. It's a two-way street - they get to take our cash, and we get to congratulate ourselves on how much better we are than the uneducated masses. There is an entire continent out there that probably doesn't give a rat's ass about "fine dining," and even if it did, doesn't have the coin to spend triple digits on a meal. As for corporate food establishments...I've driven though many communities where the opportunity to sit down at Denny's instead of shouting my order into a microphone from the front seat of the car is a welcome change. Most of the quirky local places with homemade food are long gone - and I would argue that most probably weren't that great to begin with.
  5. baked chicken brushed with bbq sauce spicy pinto beans green salad toast with a sprinkle of Penzeys garlic salt
  6. Dredging up an old thread...I find this comment by Rocks interesting. Don, do you still stand by this assessment?
  7. Soup night: homemade split pea or chicken noodle Atwater rye Cheddar Milk
  8. Comet Ping-Pong reminds me of a former straight-A honor student that has figured out exactly how much effort to put out in order to get "good" grades. I had a late lunch here yesterday, and ordered a bloody mary and The Smoky (smoked bacon, smoked mushrooms, melted onions, smoked mozz, garlic). This was a favorite once upon a time, but I wouldn't order it again based on yesterday's pie. Heavy toppings with thick doughy outer crust, stretched too thin in the middle and sodden with oil. The quality of the ingredients is still there, but the execution is lacking. As my high-school guidance counselor used to say, "you're just not achieving to your potential." (A downloadable PDF menu? I'm sorry, but that's going down on your permanent record.)
  9. Whip egg whites with a little cream of tartar, add half the sugar (you're essentially making a meringue), then beat the egg yolks with the other half of the sugar until thick and light. Fold the two egg mixtures together, then fold in the flour. Pipe out. I'll have to go back and look at a recipe to get the amounts. I'd be happy to help you out with tiramisu disposal.
  10. Right? I asked at the desk, and the hostess said no valet, and that she didn't think that they had ever had valet parking...I'm reasonably certain I had used it in the past. Maybe I'm just old and forgetful? bathtub gin heavy seas golden ale, hendricks gin, juniper infused simple syrup & fresh lemon (pleasant, but I would have chosen a different gin for this) Roasted pumpkin salad lolla rossa, parmesan, spiced pecans, garlic yogurt, pumpkin seed vinaigrette Lots of lettuce, very little of everything else. It tasted good but was very unbalanced. deviled eggs smoked paprika, caper powder, garlic chips Tasty. (why is an order of deviled eggs almost always three halves?) shrimp & grits texas shrimp, little tomatoes, rosemary, anson mill's grits Texas shrimp are very tiny, and weren't particularly flavorful. Grits were creamy. I didn't taste much rosemary, and the "little tomatoes" didn't add much caramelized brussels sprouts came drowning in a painfully sweet sauce that detracted from the flavor of the sprouts pear cobbler Served warm with lemon verbena ice cream. The best part of the meal. Nothing at all was bad, but looking back I would have made different choices.
  11. It's great that they are booking local acts. For me, this will go into the same category as the Birchmere: a music hall where you can get an occasionally acceptable sandwich.
  12. Piping does give you the crust on both sides. What was the proportion of egg whites in the batter, and did you whip them then fold them in? I made lots of genoise & ladyfingers once upon a time, and as I recall the lady fingers had more egg whites and they were added separately instead of the whole egg, fold the flour in process of a true genoise.
  13. I've had pho at the Silver Spring location 3 times, most recently last night, and the broth seems to be getting better. There were plentiful fresh herbs, including culantro, and lime instead of lemon alongside. Green papaya salad was OK. Last night we had an order of trasi fried rice - good & spicy with very fresh tasting shrimp. Service is iffy, but lingering over hot pho isn't such a bad thing on a cold, rainy night. They now have a website that lists both Silver Spring and Wheaton.
  14. I did a riff on a Real Simple recipe that bookluvingbabe mentioned a couple of weeks ago. Beef, butternut squash, canned tomatoes, red onion, cumin, ginger, smoked paprika, cinnamon, salt & pepper, in the crock pot all day. I added chick peas when I got home. Served over quinoa. Tasty and gluten free.
  15. Tagging the threads will lead more people to this site through Google searches. Don, do you do your own SEO research?
  16. I can't see the tags when using the mobile version of this site. That said, tags are the way to go, especially if they can be applied to the older content. Having that search tool for old threads would be great. It makes the site more like a source of info and less like "just" a message board.
  17. I'll amend the statement - it's the best casual fish restaurant *near* DC. It's definitely worth the drive from Takoma Park.
  18. Baked macaroni & cheddar cheese with Hebrew National hotdogs sliced up into it. Steamed broccoli Milk & Oreos Not gourmet, local, foraged, or sourced, but it went down easy on a rainy, chilly night. Ian had thirds.
  19. That worked for me, too. Thanks, Don. Oh, and I really like the new look. Much more readable. And the autosave feature is cool.
  20. I checked the market, and there doesn't seem to be an Android version of the app.
  21. We were back last Friday with the kids. Emma loved the salmon sandwich with dill sauce & Ian gave the burger a thumbs-up and told Ferhat that he liked the Fries. The fish taco/burrito and grilled porgy with saffron aioli were devoured to the last crumb by the grownups. We got two orders of fries for the four of us, and I think that was just about right. Oh, and the homemade tiramisu was excellent. This is hands-down the best casual fish restaurant in DC, and the only potential replacement for our favorite place in Miami, Captain Jim's. The only thing I would love to see is the option to get the fish as a dinner with a couple of sides, instead of just as a sandwich. Maybe someday.
  22. Android phone here. When I access the threads via "view new content" instead of the individual forums, the arrow takes me to the first post of the thread. When I go to the individual forums and try it, it brings me to the last post in the thread. Too bad, because I use "view new content" all the time.
  23. "Use Mobile Version" or somesuch was in very tiny print at the bottom of the webpage. Double tap on your screen to enlarge the page, scroll down to the bottom, & you should see it.
