  1. I know this is non-responsive, but, seriously, drive to the south side (311 E. 75th Street) and get an order of rib tips with mild sauce (or a small end) from Lem's bbq. Drive back to your hotel, open the sauce-soaked paper bag and enjoy. You will smell the smoke two blocks away from Lem's, and, depending on when you go, there may be a line. Be assertive when you place your order, kinda like you have to do at Eastern Market. Tell them you are from DC and they will love you.
  2. Zora, Ken remembered you and your husband (of course!), and he looks forward to your return!
  3. I had a phenomenal time in Montreal. It wasn't as cold as I'd expected, and as a native of Chicago, I really enjoyed the snow. Zora, thanks for the B&B recommendation. I loved Boulanger Bassin, and will post pictures of Ken's lovingly-prepared breakfasts. Yes, I had a smoked meat sandwich from Schwartz's deli. No, I didn't smuggle any into the U.S. No time for jail. I went to Au Pied de Cochon, and what I enjoyed more than the food was watching the kitchen in all its glory, doing its dance. I was perched at the bar next to a couple from Amsterdam, and the three of us were mesmerized by the five women and one man who made the magic happen, with seriousness, joy, calm, and the occasional beer. Also, lots of Obama mania around town. Go to Montreal, especially in January.
  4. Thanks, Zora and Waitman! I hope I will be able to return to Montreal when the weather is warm, but I've purchased my tickets (Amtrak there, plane home), and will have to dress in many layers! I'll check out the B&B and work on a brisket plan.
  5. I'm traveling to Montreal next weekend for the first time (unless you have other suggestions for my much-needed weekend getaway). I'll be on my own, and hope you can recommend places that welcome solo diners, particularly restaurants, cafes, etc. where I can eat a nice meal at the bar. Not trying to break the bank, but if there is a must-do experience that will be fun for me, i'll try it! Also, I know this is a food board, but if you have hotel/b&b recommendations, that would be great. Merci! (Btw, I've read the thread but I'm not sure which places are a good fit for a solo traveler.)
  6. It has become obvious to me that the NYT has our number. Published yesterday, this article suggests 19 restaurants and other establishments where people should eat when they're in town for the inauguration. Here's the link: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/01...116_DC_MAP.html. (After all these years, I still don't know how to post a link!) The restaurants are: Palena Dino Cashion's Cafe Milano Citronelle Marvin Al Crostino Cork Posto Ben's Chili Bowl Vinoteca 9:30 Club (they sell food?) Zaytina Central Ten Penh Proof Oyamel The Source Rasika
  7. I was there several nights last week, and I had a blast. They were so busy they ran out of the bar-menu food (shrimp and grits, scallops, ribs, hand-cut fries, crabcakes --technically, it was supposed to be a soft opening), but the chili cheese dogs were available all night. Next door is warm and welcoming, and even though I was a newcomer, Nizam, his wife, and their staff treated me like I was an old friend. I'm excited to have such a special place so close to home, and look forward to trying the items that will be available on the full menu.
  8. Komi From what i've gathered, you don't go out to high-end places very often because your're busy maintaining a very high-end place. I like to call it, "Chez Zora." Have fun!
  9. I've got a date with Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper, and a bottle of bubbly from Ace Beverage. It doesn't get any better than that.
  10. Thanks, Scott and Hillvalley! ETA: BrettAshley, Our posts must have crossed in the mail (internet). Thanks, and happy birthday!
  11. My brother and I are throwing my mom a surprise birthday party on Nov. 15. We're having the party at my house (and my brother is catering), but we're receiving more RSVPs than we expected, so we may have to change the location. Any suggestions? We're not trying to break the bank and would prefer a place that does not have a lot of stairs and will allow us to bring the food, although the former is more important than the latter. Thanks for your suggestions!
  12. Well, Chris, I followed you from Andale to Dino, and now I will have to check out Enology. Congrats, and thanks for everything!
  13. This has been a blast. I haven't laughed so hard in weeks, months maybe. But, serious, flossing at the table or while sitting in your airplane seat? I couldn't make this stuff up. I am pro-floss!
  14. LMAO! I wish you could upload a video of that, in particular your and jlock's reaction as the flying bits of food landed on your plates. I have braces, so I am brushing and flossing constantly, but rarely (LOL!) in public.
  15. Happy Birthday, mdt! Happy Birthday, rocks!
  16. Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes. Way too much for one weekend.
  17. I went again today, but only because my mother insisted. She had the burger with bacon, mushrooms, grilled onions, roasted garlic, pickles, aged cheddar, and guac on the side. Whoa!
  18. What concerns me is this post by Tammy Newsom: "Interestingly enough we have a list, I am in the Business, of the names of the members and their user names. Not just for Rockwell, but for other sites. . ." Is it possible that she has a list of our names? If so, how would she have obtained it?
  19. Call the authorities. This place is a problem. I returned from California on Sunday and drove directly from Dulles to Ray's and had the Soul Brother #1 burger, "the hardest working chow in the business." I returned yesterday and had a burger with mushrooms, grilled onions and Vermont white cheddar. I ordered both burgers to go, brought them home, and enjoyed them with a glass of red wine. Only shame kept me away tonight. Also on the menu (with subtitles I will have to add later): The Big P.O.P.P.A. The Let's Get it On The New Jack The Mack Why does Michael know so many r&b and hip-hop songs? Why does Michael look so happy? Why would I dare to ask these questions?
  20. I went to Meridian with friends yesterday, and had a good time. I also enjoyed my and my friends' food -- crawfish mac and cheese, catfish, sauteed swiss chard, and scallops. Unfortunately, my first visit to Meridian will also be my last, since Meridian is closing for good on Tuesday. Last night, they were serving "The Last Supper", which included a buy one entree get one entree free special. The place has a nice vibe and I'm sad to see it close, particularly given the limited restaurant options in the neighborhood.
