  1. Stuffing blue cheese (of whichever is handiest) into dried apricots is one of the easiest and tastiest noshes one can produce in a hurry. Just sayin'.
  2. I was exhausted just reading the story.
  3. He played Left Field for the first time. He caught both hits to him for outs and hit TWO doubles in the game!
  4. One of my very favorite salads is chopped endive with lemon juice and olive oil, sprinkled with bacon and blue cheese. Yesterday, I picked up some endives and "roquefort" cheese at TJ's with the intention of making this for supper tomorrow. Now, all I need to is to find some bacon. (BTW: my brother won't touch blue cheese in any shape or form. )
  5. Send a PM to Waitman and see who he's using for his kitchen project. Might help, couldn't hurt.
  6. I believe she is referring to this actual place. I'm guessing you don't have to buy any gifts for young women.
  7. I can't believe it's been eight years, either. Your mother's mini food processor is still going strong and has to proved to be very handy for our two-person household. Not to mention the other things we bought, which we use all the time.
  8. I can laugh, since the Nats won today! Dame Edna made note of Brian WILSON pitching to WILSON Ramos.
  9. I went to bed at around 11 pm or so, thinking the game had been cancelled. Was surprised to see that it had gone ahead and ended at 1:21 am. I had to laugh at the description of the very sparse crowd left at the end--an American Legion baseball crowd.
  10. There is a separate bar menu to choose from. Some things are also on the regular menu (like the soups). You can skip the bar menu and order off the regular menu, but there is no special pricing for that.
  11. When we would be traveling on the Autobahn--which had no speed limits--in West Germany (note the name) in the 1960s and be passed by some nut job doing over 100 miles an hour, I would say out loud (sitting in the back seat with no seat belt), "See you in the accident up ahead." It actually came true often enough to scare me. I'm talking wrecks so bad that nobody could have made it out alive. Since I was way too young to have a driver's license, that sort of mayhem put the fear of Dog in me.
  12. HEY LOVEHOCKEY: This didn't take long: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/george-springer-misplays-ball-at-least-four-times-and-allows-denard-span-to-score-153929309.html
  13. Since I'm listening to the game on the radio, it was referred to as a "Little League home run." Texas is first, second, third, etc. a Football state. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the Nats won a World Series before any Texas team does--and, the Rangers used to be the Senators. It took them almost 40 years to even get to a playoff game.
  14. Those barriers were put up yesterday, I believe. TedE: Thanks for linking to that site. I just love this stuff. The Washingtoniana Room at the MLK Library is full of old maps of the city before street names and numbers became standardized. I worked on the committee that created the Adams Morgan Heritage Trail (and, my name is on every one of those signs--in case anybody cares to look).
  15. If the Japanese PM called the restaurant to say that he was bringing the Prez, Kennedy, and assorted others to dine on a given date, what fool wouldn't take him up on it? This is such a no-brainer.
  16. I've got two stacks of unread books (I don't do the Kindle thing) going back at least three years. Before the intertubes came long, I read at least a book a week. Now? I can't even get through the New Yorker in a week's time and they start piling up, too. I've started Unbroken at least twice, before putting it down for other things--and I just Laura Hillenbrand's writing and back story. The last books I sat down and read until the end as soon as they arrived were the latest biography of Julia Child- Dearie and all three volumes of Call the Midwife.
  17. Well, I hosted Easter dinner again this year. Seriously, if Dame Edna wasn't here to do the dishes, I wouldn't bother. Noshes: Bacon stuffed cherry tomatoes. Seriously good and all were eaten. Mini crab cakes by Phillips from Costco. These had been sitting in my freezer since last year and were seriously good. Served with tartar sauce from Whole Paycheck. Prosecco and Martinelli's sparkling apple cider were on offer First course. Asparagus served with an Avocado dressing, with slices of watermelon radish and garnished with pea shoots (the last two items from the farmers market) Brazilian Cheese Balls (see the other thread on those). My guests seemed to really enjoy these. Dry white wine from Portugal (which was really excellent--this is the second Portuguese wine I have had that is worth seeking out). Main Course: Masitas de Puerco served with black beans and rice and Goya's fried plantains. (One of my guests is Puerto Rican and a couple of the others don't like lamb--so there we are). Dessert: Rhubarb and Strawberry Custard Pie with whipped cream. I don't know how other people do this so easily. I started thinking about this weeks ago and have been cooking for two days. Even though I cleaned dishes while I worked, so that by the time everyone arrived there were only the pots and pan I needed at the moment--plus the place settings--there was a mountain of dishes to clean at the end. Thus, my gratitude to Dame Edna who made a point of getting out of the way this weekend. The Easter Bunny brought him a gift.
  18. This is why I finally surrendered to the Tomato Gods and stopped bothering to plant them. Those nasty little suckers would take a bite out of every single tomato--just as they were starting to ripen. Admittedly, I had more luck growing cherry tomatoes, but those weren't the ones I was really after. And, even though I plant basil every year, I buy tomatoes and basil at the various farmers markets every week during the season--so it is all kind of a waste. Also, it's amazing how many acorns I find in my pots. Removing nascent oak trees requires taking the plant out of the pot and doing some real yanking. "Rats with good PR" sums them up nicely for me.
  19. I had to watch "Dancing with the Stars" (so sue me) and, thus, didn't turn on the game until 10pm. The way these games have been going, I figured there was at least one inning--if not two--to go. Nope, i caught the last out of the ninth. Still, a win is a win and the Nats have won ALL their games. . . except the ones with the Braves, who they won't have to face again until June.
  20. I didn't realize that. I was just happy to go there a pick up a couple of baskets and then wandered around the store and found the olive oil for a ridiculous price. Oh, and grabbed another bottle of Sriracha for $2.99 (what with the possible closing of the plant and all).
