  1. I've made a ganache frosting with soy cream to work around a dairy issue. If that is too intense for the preschoolers, you can whip it so it is lighter and meets their expectations for fluffy frosting. Or what about a vanilla cake with chocolate drizzles?
  2. Wish this would make a difference in my being able to come but my meeting ends at 6 in Reston. Will have to look at their online system to find another shift.
  3. That's better then me -- I'm going to have to bow out due to an afternoon meeting that won't end until 6.
  4. Boynton Beach My parents and I stumbled upon this Flakowitz Deli when were visiting my brother in August. I thought the pastrami was the best non-NY pastrami I'd ever had. We mentioned it to my cousins who live near one of the NY Flakawitz Delis and had raved about it for years.
  5. Oy. I signed up for the 17th online. There were several available slots if anyone who can't make the 28th wants to join me.
  6. I tried these a while back and thought they were nice little pastries but not great canales. They had no bite to the crust, just the soft, almost soggy, texture you expect from the microwave. Maybe they'd benefit from a pop in the toaster oven. For me, the contrast between the crust and the custardy inside is what makes a canales great. Wouldn't stop me from eating these with an afternoon tea, but in my mind I'd be calling them something else.
  7. Tried the grilled peaches with pancetta, duck stock & onion reduction, mascarpone at the bar tonight. A fantastic dish that we couldn't decide if it should be an appetizer or a dessert. Or if you should order a portion to start your meal and another to finish it. The sweet/smoky/creamy combo really works. Have I mentioned how happy I am to be home?
  8. I like pan sauces with red wine and huckleberries over duck or a pork loin.
  9. It is a shame that we could only fill 8 of our 10 spots because DCCK makes it so darn easy to volunteer. They have a great setup and the time flies. I've been to other places where I felt as if 1/3 of my volunteer time was wasted because they had a disorganized setup -- not this place. I tried to sign up via their website for other shifts and they are booked solid for months. I would tell DanielK to sign me up now for next month but I'll be welcoming my new nephew. So the rest of you should step up -- a great cause, great company, and probably easier than any other volunteer shift you've ever done.
  10. Had to run an errand in Tenley today. Had planned on stopping at 2Amys but my dining companion saw this place and wanted to go. The burger was decent -- better than typical fast food. The fries were a tale of two stories. The regular was an enormous portion. You could have fed a family of four for a week on the amount of fries they gave me. The regular cup was full and then there was more than another cup's worth in the bag. Which brings me to the two stories. The fries in the styrofoam cup quickly became a soggy, inedible mess. The overflow fries in the bag stayed crisp thanks to not steaming themselves and the having the bag to blot the oil. These were fabulous. Were I to return, I would order the fries just dumped in the bag and ask them to hold the cup.
  11. Had my first dinner at Proof tonight and start to finish an excellent experience. My dining companion was running late and our server did an outstanding job of taking care of me without hovering and making the delay seem three times longer than it was. We split the flatbread with ricotta and prosciutto. A great blend of salty and creamy. I had the seared pork loin with carmelized shallot risotto with mozzarella and collard greens. I wasn't sure how the the mozzarella would be incorporated into the risotto since it wouldn't get saucy when melted but it gave it a nice chew and somehow stayed soft and creamy to the last bite. The collards were very thin shreds and cooked crispy. They gave a brightness to the dish to counter the smokiness of the risotto. Had a glass of the rose of the day -- a grenache that was dry, crisp, and perfect for the muggy day. I'll be back soon. Their lunch deal is calling my name.
  12. I had this same experience and wondered if it was an off batch. I dubbed it shredded salami.
  13. A friend picked this place for dinner last night as dinner is 40% off on Monday nights. The weather was perfect for their pseudo-patio dining room. She'd warned me that the service could be a little spotty but it was fine. They kept our water glasses full, were fairly attentive, and didn't mind our lingering (in a 2/3 empty place). The food was good enough for a Monday in the neighborhood at the lower price point but I'm not sure I'd come across town or on another night. I had the crab and shrimp soup mentioned above and I thought it was well seasoned and let the ample crab shine through but the egg just didn't work for me. This was followed by croquetas that would have been excellent as a tator tot but though the ham was visibly present, it didn't add to the flavor. My dining companion had the crab and avocado salad which she really enjoyed and the mushroom quesadilla which she didn't -- something about it being the wrong cheese.
  14. I'm seriously jealous! With li hing mui?
  15. During my four year (!) hiatus from DC I often found the bus much more useful when I came back for business trips than the train. Just something about hotel and meeting locations I guess. The schedule is more of a suggestion than something to count on. It'll give you a handle on frequency -- main routes are great but side ones aren't as user friendly. I found it safe and enjoyed the sightseeing both on and off the bus. There was one time when an obviously drunk guy tried to pick a fight with another passenger and the driver pulled right over and escorted the drunk off the bus.
  16. Agreed! Keep us posted -- we're cheering for you!
  17. Same here - at least to start. I like that they are more comfortable to carry while walking home and that each bag holds more then your typical grocery bag. It did take some training to put the bag immediately back into my purse or backpack or car -- now it is habit. The clincher for me came when sorting through some marine debris data for a project at work -- plastic bags are the #2 most commonly collected trash at coastal cleanups accounting for 12% of the total debris (double that of plastic bottles, triple that of glass bottles, quadruple that of cans). That made it seem like a much simpler change for me to make.
  18. Or 600,000 of them that were collected in last years' coastal cleanup.
  19. The semester just got crazier as it went on and my pledge to to take the scenic route lasted about a day. The good news, I managed to maintain the 20 pound weight loss over the course of the crazy few months without putting much thought into it. This tells me I've changed some eating patterns for the better. We were putting together a slideshow to run at one of the graduation events and several were commenting how different I look from the start of the year. And with that, I'm off to buy some pants that fit!
