  1. That isn't a representative sample of the Brazilian population. You'd need at least 1,000 subjects in a double blind experiment. Come back when you're ready to present your findings.
  2. Thanks. Having a great day. And Happy to you Mr. Shorter.
  3. I do. Doing well, although over the last year I have put back on about 40 of the 160 I lost. This has coincided with a huge jump in workload and commute time and the accompanying levels of stress. Less time to cook and less energy has made it a struggle. My impending 40th birthday (this Thursday) combined with the two year anniversary of the beginning of my big diet has given me some renewed enthusiasm. I actually just hung up the phone with my doctor's office setting up an appointment for next week.
  4. I had a very similar Hickory Grilled Fish on Cauliflower at Jackson's over the holidays and if was much better than I had hoped for (grilled fish s never going to be the most exciting thing on a menu).
  5. Lebanese Taverna at Tyson's II is chain-y enough to pass as safe but local so it won't be familiar to out of towners. And I still think you can make a pretty passable meal out of a handful of mezzes there.
  6. Well, I had been kicking around the same fifteen pounds since Thanksgiving despite still losing inches. But my last weigh may have been a bit of a breakthrough with a loss of 6.5. Given my previous ups and (mostly) downs over the last three months I am at 158 now. I had been on a plateau for a while, so I decided I needed a kick start and started from scratch (although without reverting to the nasty protein drinks they had me using early on) - journaling, just grilled meat and vegetables, more exercise, more water, healthy snacks between meals. It turns out that all the things they tell you to do on every diet plan ever written still work. I'm finally at the point where I see an end to the process coming. And it might actually be one of my choosing instead of where nature decides to stop me. I'd really like to lose another 65 pounds and see how I feel and try to maintain it for a while. I'll still be the biggest guy in most rooms I step into (which I have to admit I actually kinda like).
  7. Well... This has been 28% of my weight so far. Not that I'll ever be a skinny f'er or even as skinny as you are now, Al. I was still the biggest guy at my college. Hell, at 9 lbs 13 oz and 22 inches I was the biggest baby in the nursery. At least in college I had boundless energy. Basketball 5 days a week. Raquetball 3 nights a week. Chasing girls the rest of the time. Exercise takes more motivation these days. And jenrus frowns on the girl chasing these days. I'd love to do another 100, but I'm going to ride it as long as it will carry me.
  8. I guess it has been a while since my last confession / update. December was slow with the Holidays and stress and routine change due to a job change, but January has picked up where I left off in November. I'm now down 153 and am at the lowest point I've been since my junior year in college twenty years ago.
  9. I am 6'5 - and most of my friends from back home are a little short - 5'7 - 5'10 range. That suit was actually in storage in the basement, along with dozens of shirts and pants from six years ago. It is actually back in storage now, as the pants are falling off of me. I've gone through almost everything I had in storage from the past. Another 25 pounds and I'll need to buy all new stuff in sizes I haven't been in since college.
  10. Two "Before" pictures - the first is last New Year's Eve and about 15 pounds below my heaviest but it is a good comparison to the more recent picture. The second is from the week before I started the diet in June (that's me in the middle ). The "During" picture is from a month or so ago. I've lost about 10 or 15 since then. "After" pictures are a long way off
  11. Personally, I always trust my own opinion more than someone else's.
  12. I feel good, although the energy spike I felt back in September and October has evened out, which is probably a good thing. I do like the fact that I don't have real the sluggish feeling I used to get from time to time. I guess I am feeling normal.
  13. Down 136 as of this morning. I've managed to lose 6 pounds since Thanksgiving morning after not losing anything the previous week. Go figure. Every once in a while I think I've hit the dreaded plateau, but a few days later it comes off in bunches.
  14. Yup - very good. But the half smoke is even better. Although I recall that both are grilled, not fried as requested above. Both are enhanced with the onion mustard sauce you can request.
  15. The spate of activity in the Fit for Summer forum today reminded me that it has been over a month since my last update. As of this monring I'm down 25.5 since my last post a little over a month ago and 115 since the middle of June. I've lost 10 inches in my waist and have dropped two sizes in my shirts. And it really isn't showing any signs of letting up any time soon. My pace has slowed a little bit - from 6 pounds a week for the first few months to more like four or five per week the last two months - but that is to be expected. In fact I'm surprised it has gone at this pace for as long as it has. In 2001 I lost 115 on Weight Watchers, but it took me 15 months and I was only that low for one week before it stalled and started going up. I'm not ready for that to happen, so I've recommited myself and got back to exercising daily this week. Hopefully this keeps things in gear. No good restaurant meals to report, but I'll take the trade off for a while longer.
  16. If this is any relation to the Los Toltecos in Sterling, be careful of what you wish for. See my 2003 eGullet post under the thread "Really BAD Food, Worst Meal In DC ... Ever?". Four years later it still holds true.
  17. Another monthly report: Down another 21.5 this month for a total of 89.5 in three months. The biggest thing I've noticed this month is my energy level rocketing off the charts. I'm finding myself going around the house looking for projects. Next up - re-tiling the fireplace surround. Is it because of the weight loss or the drugs and supplements? Got me, but who cares.
  18. Well, it's one month later and I've lost another 24.5 pounds for a total of 68. And about 6 inches in my waist. Strangely enough, I've lost exactly six pounds 6 pounds each and every week since the first week (aside from one week where my body rebelled and held onto all but .5 pounds). Not on average - down 6 pounds, down 6 pounds, down 12 pounds after two weeks, etc. Some of the challenges I wrote about in my last update are becoming habits. I'm getting more creative with meats. I'm really not craving carbs that much. I'm still working at vegetables but have been getting more and more variety in. Once winter comes around that is going to become a challenge again. I'm getting more exercise, even in the hot weather. Dining out is still tough and I find myself more grumpy and disagreeable than I'd like when we are looking for a place to go. I like eating out so I don't have to cook and for the change of pace, but it is losing some of the joy it brought me in the past. Tapas and mezze places seem to be my best bets. And I've gotten over the hump that reading the food boards doesn't prove to be much of an obstacle for me any longer.
  19. My recollection is that the list was initially compiled based on a dinner being over a certain price point.
  20. You might want to try Landmarc which is just into Tribecca but only about 6 blocks from City Hall. Extensive menu that both foodies and non-foodies should like, great inexpensive wine program, causal atmosphere. It is the type of neighborhood restaurant every neighborhood wants.
