  1. Obviously a great accomplishment by Thompson. But, seriously, I'm not sure I get the focus on "the quarter". If someone else scored 37 points in a shorter period of time that just happened to span multiple quarters, I'd prefer that record to Thompson's record. It's kind of like how we like to talk about hitting for the cycle in baseball, but kind of ignore if a player has 2 HR, 1 2B, and a single. I mean, we don't ignore it, but we just call it a great game and don't give it a cool name like "the cycle" even though he had a better game than someone who hit for the cycle.
  2. I wasn't a great ball player by any stretch of the imagination, but I could shoot decently. I remember playing in a youth league once in my junior high years and being in the zone once...in a practice scrimmage. Everything I shot, from anywhere on the court, was going in. It was an awesome feeling. That practice was on a Thursday night, I believe. We get to gameday on Saturday and coach says, "OK, dgreen's got the hot hand so let's get him the ball." I'm thinking "WTF, dude? That was a couple days ago. How long do you think the zone lasts?" Sure enough, first possession I get the ball probably from about college 3-point range and I launch it...air ball. I probably ended the game with maybe 6 points. And then there were those times when you're in the mini-zone. Where you have maybe 5-6 straight shots that all seem to fall no matter what. I'm doing high-arcing, turnaround, fadeaway, baseline jumpers and it's nothing but net. I've never been a good dribbler, but I could run the floor, get the ball, take a couple dribbles and hit a stop-and-pop while feeling like I'm elevating higher than I ever do. And then you miss one and it all goes away. You think you're going to experience that true "in the zone" moment again, but it's gone after a handful of shots.
  3. Not sure when it happened. But, assists are only awarded if there's no change of possession. If Ovechkin steals the puck from Crosby and scores without any other Cap touching the puck since that change of possession, then Ovechkin gets the goal and nobody gets an assist. If Backstrom passes to Green, Green loses possession to the opponent, Backstrom gets it back and passes to Ovechkin, and Ovechkin scores, then Backstrom gets the only assist.
  4. My balance has always sucked. It took me a while to get a hang of riding a bike and I fell every single time I ever went ice skating. Last time I went was probably 15 years ago and I fell hard on my butt and vowed to never step on ice again. I think I've been rollerskating maybe once in my life and I refuse to try roller blades. I really like hockey, but obviously can't skate at all. I assume if I had started young then I could be very comfortable on skates. I grew up playing street hockey in the neighborhood on foot and played in some deck hockey leagues from late high school through my 20s. Really fun sport to play. I miss those days. The things some of these people can do with a stick on skates on ice is amazing. So much skill is required. Olympic hockey is arguably my favorite sports tournament. In my opinion, it's better than even the Final Four.
  5. I was searching around Google Maps the other day for "seafood restaurants" and saw this place pinned on the map. I assumed it was an error based on the location, but I guess not.
  6. Wow, you guys are old . I'm more of a football card guy with the bulk of my damage done between mid-80s and early 90s (born in '75). Taking my allowance and riding my bike to a store to buy football cards every two weeks was big part of my childhood. Under the stairs in my basement is a plastic container full of football, baseball, and hockey cards. My son (9) has bought a few packs of cards and I've used them as stocking stuffers a few times. The other day I mentioned the bin of cards in the basement and, of course, he asked to see them. We didn't have time right then; I need to remember to break those out soon.
  7. At the very least, I hope we finally see Gio dropped in the rotation to #5. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Roark get #5, but I understand the desire for at least one left-hander and the fact that Roark has experience out of the pen and Gio doesn't. But, I'm almost done with Gio. (Isn't it absolutely amazing that the rotation is so strong that Gio is a guy that doesn't inspire any confidence?) He's just way too shaky at times. Barring injury(ies), I see no way Gio should be part of the postseason four-man rotation.
  8. "Most Grand Slams in the same inning off of the same pitcher" has too many unnecessary criteria to it to make it all that meaningful to me. Sure, it's not on par with something like "Most RBI in a day game, in July, 2 days after a full moon, in the Central Time Zone, against a left-handed pitcher", but it's not as clean and simple as "Most hits in a season". Had Park been pulled for another pitcher, would that have changed Tatis' accomplishment? Had the inning actually ended and Tatis' 2nd GS happened in the next inning, would that really change much?
  9. It's been open since 2002 according to their website, so they're already doing pretty well. I've worked in the area for a while. Not sure why it took me so long to give it a try.
  10. Next time you find yourself near Suitland and you're wanting some good seafood at very reasonable prices, go find Food for Life Cuisine on Suitland Road. I've made two visits and I'm amazed at the amount of food you get for the price. Oh, and it's good, too. Today I'm enjoying the whiting nuggets (about 8-9 large nuggets for $6.00) and hushbabies (10 large puppies for $3.50; not sure why they're called "babies"). Good hushpuppies can be hard to find around here, but I found some! Looks like they mainly have whiting, tilapia, and salmon. They also have some chicken items and burgers, southern style sides, desserts, and carrot fries (which I have yet to try). You get two sauces with your order, which I believe are made in-house. I'd post a link to their website, but for some odd reason I'm having trouble pasting here. You can copy and paste this: fflcuisineonline.com.
  11. Willard's BBQ is in Chantilly. I feel like there's probably a few places worth exploring in Sully Plaza that I've never tried. The shopping center has a few Thai, Indian, and Peruvian places.
  12. Wife and I tried it today. Didn't even know it was here even though they have been open for seven months. Pizza was good. Service was fine. I wasn't really clear whether all pizzas are VPN or just the three under the VPN heading on the menu. The waitress gave a confusing answer when I asked, so I am still not sure. But I think they are all VPN? Anyway, nice to have this place nearby. My kids always whine about going to Pupatella because of how far away it is. Ciao isn't Pupatella, but still good and much closer. I will have to take the kids soon.
  13. Trummer's is running a pop-up Seafood Shack located at their Clifton restaurant. It runs through early August and is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Also, I read that they are looking into opening a Gainesville location called Trummer's Coffee and Wine Bar.
  14. Went her for lunch. Food was solid. Wife and I shared the Shrimp Badda Bing and one of the pizzas (artichoke, mushroom, olives, and ham). Both were good. The shrimp was an appetizer but larger than we expected. The pizzas are sized for one, but are a good size too. Definitely not on the level of some the areas best pizzas, but still good. I really liked the set up and the decor. Good atmosphere. The courtyard looks like it will be a great place to have an outdoor meal once they open it. You can also check out the market and pizza oven connected next door. The lady today said they import most of their market items from Italy and some from France. They'll start pizza delivery in a month or so to approximately a five-mile radius (which won't cover much since it's a sparsely populated area).
  15. If you are ever in the market for a used car, used tires, psychic reading, or a tattoo, there's no better place to be. And we might be on our way to saying the same thing for Mexican food (yes, I'm using "Mexican" to include Salvadorian, Peruvian, and others).
  16. The owners of Guajillo and Casa Oaxaca are now in Manassas on Mathis Avenue. Wife and her sister went for lunch last week and were the only customers the whole time they were there. My wife and I were there for lunch Friday and there were three other parties the whole time we were there. I haven't been to Guajillo or Casa Oaxaca, so I can't speak to how it compares to them. I enjoyed my chorizo quesadilla and my wife's five tacos plate (steak, pork, chicken, fish, and lamb). Thin crispy chips and warm salsa were good.
  17. Anyone been to Second St or Mad About Chocolate? Headed down to Williamsburg in a couple weeks and would like to try something new.
  18. Some Clifton news. After having breakfast at Clifton Cafe this morning, my wife and I walked around town for a while. After strolling along a few of the streets, we were walking along Chapel Road back towards Main Street and noticed some construction in progress at the old Heart in Hand building. We went around to the front porch and I saw the building permit and another flyer. Coming soon (Fall 2012, according to one flyer) to old town Clifton is Villagio of Clifton and it appears that the old consignment shop right next door will be Villagio Pizzeria. According to this article, the owner is Sal Speziale, who has opened other Italian restaurants in Northern Virginia.
  19. El Fresco is pretty popular and isn't bad. I've been a few times and all visits were fine. I like it for the price. But, all else being equal, I definitely prefer Picante for Mexican.
  20. Lynn's Paradise closed abruptly on January 11. There are some news articles out there speculating why.
  21. Is this place open right now? I've seen articles saying it opens Saturday. But, on their web site, there's a graphic that says "YES...THE MARKET IS OPEN" and "OPEN SATURDAY & SUNDAY 8-8". My wife and I were thinking about going tomorrow, but I really can't tell if it's open or not.
  22. I don't see anything wrong with his advice on how to use Yelp. I only listened to a few seconds at that 20:00 mark, but he was simply saying, "Read the long, well-thought-out, smart reviews on Yelp. Ignore the ratings and simpleton reviews." I guess he could have said, "Go to donrockwell.com," but that wouldn't have worked for every city not named Washington, DC. (Yes, I realize there are other cities on here, but you get the point.) Hey, I'll admit I'm biased. I'm a GMU econ grad and really enjoy reading Cowen.
