  1. Don't forget about residual heat, Grasshopper. You must cook until it is almost done . . . .
  2. Friday, April 7: Happy hour at Corduroy! 6-ish to ???
  3. This Friday April, anyone up for a post-birthday (that would be my birthday) post-work (that would be everyone's work) celebratory HR at Corduroy? The Walrus and I will be there with bells on :-D
  4. Hell, we were lingering over coffee when Landrum brought us out another dessert. We must have looked underfed ;-)
  5. Jparrot, the Walrus, I and two non-DR friends had a super meal at Ray's last night, too (we were the other wing of the post-Szechuan Boy contingient). Since we weren't able to sign up for Sunday's mystery dinner, we wanted to get a good dose of RTS goodness before the hiatus. Crab bisque, seared scallops, tomato and mozzarella salad, cowboy cut ribeye with diablo sauce, garlic mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, key lime pie, chocolate mousse, some great wine, super friendly, no-pressure service--what's not to like? People who've been jumping on the bash-Ray's bandwagon can stick it.
  6. I think the seafood at Los Tios is one of its hidden attractions ... the shrimp appetizer and tilapia main are very good too.
  7. Vanilla ice cream + Odwalla orange juice + immersion blender = yummy. Or is this technically a milkshake? Either way, it rocks.
  8. I was delighted to get a brief tutorial from Michael one afternoon when I stopped by to pick up a quartet of uncooked ribeyes and he asked "Have you ever grilled a 2-inch steak before?" (He said they usually require a written test, but would make an exception in my case ... I must have looked hungy!) His instructions, tailored to my grill (versus the 900-degree behemoth at RTS), resulted in pure steak goodness. Almost as good as the RTS version! Thanks, Chef!
  9. I made my pot rack from a remnant of 4x4 landscape timber and some large screw hooks from Home Depot. It's got rustic good looks and cost <$10 (originally <$5, but I have since added more hooks). Because I cook in a relatively tight galley kitchen, I was able to "mount" the rack simply by laying the timber so that it spans the space over the window between two kitchen cabinets.
  10. Ditto for "So's Your Mom," but my recommendation is based on old intel circa 1996 :-D The Heidelberg Pastry Shoppe at Lee Hwy and N. Culpeper St in Arlington is also a good source.
  11. Michael, while you are riding this wave of success, why not auction off 90-minute blocks of table time on eBay? That way, market forces could determine the price of entry--times that have high demand (say, Saturday at 7:30) would go for a higher price, set by the bidders. Less popular times might be available at a relatively minimal cost. Just think, you could make extra money and call anyone who bitches unamerican ;-D.Can't wait for the next time I get to eat your delicious steak!
  12. My latest crave: A heaping spoonful of natural crunchy peanut butter (eaten off the spoon) and a 12-oz. glass of chocolate Ovaltine flavored skim milk. Malty peanut goodness!
  13. Different strokes for different folks ... I tried this dish a couple of nights ago and it is one of my new favorites. Beautiful with a good pinot noir, perfectly seared medallions of savory stuffed skin-on dark chicken meat balanced with the vegetal sweetness of the mash and that intense sauce. A spot-on remedy for the cold wet of winter.
  14. Look for one of the many area Comfort One locations in the area.
  15. Dropped by for dinner again last night. I am consistently amazed at how much I enjoy the seafood here. The shrimp in garlic butter app really pops. And comfort on a plate doesn't get much better than the huevos rancheros!
  16. That's a good point. So many of the chatters seem to view dining out as an unpleasant burden instead of a joy. They seem frustrated that they don't have total control over the experience, but are too insecure to bring problems to the attention of their server or other restaurant staff. Although that private-room cigar dinner anecdote did take the cake ...
  17. Or was concerned about ingesting soft-cooked eggs. As for me, salmonella is always worth the risk ...
  18. Clearly, FLOTUS didn't get DR's memo about triple spacing!
  19. Zuki Moon ... it was a favorite lunch and pre-KenCen dinner spot. Glad the location is still being put to good use :-)
