  1. This document lists Virginia as one of four states "where bills have been defeated." So what's the real story in Virginia? I thought (and this thread suggests) it is legal to recork and go here.
  2. Well, your mileage may vary. I think it's just as good since they expanded--although I prefer to sit on the "original" side for a cozier ambiance.
  3. Dollars to doughnuts any guy who comes back with lines like these is either embarassed himself by your rejection, covering his ass because he doesn't want to get into trouble on the job, or playing some sort of head game.
  4. This delivery dude sounds like a predator to me. He probably is pulling the same sh*t with other women too. His behavior sounds like it has escalated and it may continue. This doesn't sound like it (to him) is about how you look or your behavior. It sounds like it is about power and control. He knows he is making you uncomfortable. You should report this to the police.
  5. My food was great on Friday night, but the service was pis-poor. Super mussels, venison sausage (with a hint of blueberry!) over lentils, and osso bucco with braised veg. Not so super that we waited for more than 20 minutes after being seated before anyone came to take our order, or that we had to ask 3 different servers 5 different times for water, or that some servers spent much of their time milling about with no clear purpose except avoiding eye contact with patrons. They told us they were one down in the front of the house that night, for the restaurant's sake I hope it was the manager who called in sick.
  6. I'm in. Thanks to the Walrus for hipping me to this :-D
  7. Hard to believe I've eaten entire cowboy cut ribeyes in one sitting a couple of times before. I think the eggnog and christmas cookies have put me off my game! I am glad that I left enough room for punkin' pie ... the crust has a hint of molasses that makes it extra special.
  8. Tripewriter Eats Tripe I had the pleasure of eating tripe for the first time last Saturday @ Eve. My new in-laws treated us to the tasting room (yay in-laws!) and although I was tempted to order a "safer" meat course, I decided to try something new. Plus the menu description promised house-made chorizo as part of the dish. My inner charcuterie hound began straining at the leash. My impression? In a word, yum. In more than a word: savory, deep flavors reminiscent of a beefy ratatouille. Sweet red and yellow tomatoes, the aforementioned chorizo, and oregano. The honeycombed centerpiece of this dish was seared crisp on the outside, meaty on the inside. Rich and delish. Reticulum ratatouille. What an offally good idea.
  9. I've been making my own in minutes with my favorite new kitchen gadget. Poached egg, canadian bacon and cheese on a toasted english muffin (or bagel), yum. We got ours on sale from Amazon, but I saw them in CVS for $30, next to the hot dog toaster and the chocolate fountain. Just load, press a button, and stack cooked ingredients.
  10. Be careful, someone might alert homeland security.
  11. Even though it killed the crocodile hunter, skate is my new favorite food (esp. when served with cauliflower and bacon). Until recently, it was something I never imagined I would have the opportunity (or inclination) to try. Thanks, Restaurant Eve!
  12. I've been jonesin' for some of this ever since I had it in Tokyo some years back, in a small restaurant that played loud 1950s roots rock and had some very patient and friendly people working the front of the house who helped us order and demoed how to eat it. It was a great culture-jam experience. So, any reports on the Rockville version? I'd love to try it sometime. Cheap enough for a $20 tues?
  13. Woah, what a spread. I would try to eat lightly for the rest of the week, 'ceptin' I have a couple of visits to Eve and some compulsory chili tasting scheduled between now and the pique-nique. Oh, we-he-ell! I plan to help surpass the pig-roast goal (1st annual DR pork-a-thon?), and hope others will too.
  14. Porcupine asked about my "five-way fixins." For Cincinnati chili, they are: + Spaghetti (two-way) + Shredded Cheddar Cheese (three-way) + Chopped Onions (four-way) + Kidney Beans (five-way) and some oyster crackers on the side. The wilds of Cincinnati (indeed, the entire Ohio Territory) were once claimed by the Colony of Virginia, so translation should pose few difficulties.
  15. Sheesh, talk about rockwellus interruptus . . . could you please complete this car crash so we can stop rubbernecking and drive on?
  16. Count me in for a pot of Cincinnati chili and five-way fixins. Hmm, that sounds so good I might make some this week!
  17. Plain vanilla custard is my favorite, and my benchmark for comparing custard joints. When I want variety at DG, I tend to look to the sorbets. No mix ins required. Have fun exploring!
  18. Morimoto's losing its mojo, I think. We've been making it a regular part of our visits to Philly since the year it opened -- usually on our own, once for a memorable meal with friends. We likely will look for some new experiences in new places during our next trip. Our meal on Sunday evening was not what we expected in terms of value or hospitality. Too bad we didn't have the same server as Dcdavidm -- ours immediately questioned our choice of cocktail and pushed us to order something that would "pair with our food." So we ended up not getting any predinner drinks. Then when we were discussing the tasting menus and beverage pairings he kept telling us what we wanted wouldn't work, without explanation. I finally said "we seem to be hearing a lot of 'no' from you tonight, what's the deal?" and his answer was "well some things just don't work." I ordered the $150 tasting menu and while it was well-prepared, it was not comparable to my previous experiences (both at that price point and below) in terms of ingredients or innovation. At one point, for example, our server said chef wanted to know how full I was, to give me the option of fewer pieces of sushi with more special ingredients. He then brought out a plate of six nigiri that weren't anything out of the ordinary. At the end of our meal, we asked the hostess if she could call us a cab (something offered to us routinely during previous visits). "Lots of cabs come by here," she said. "Just go outside."
  19. When we chatted with him on Friday night, he mentioned that he had just perfected his recipes for the chipper. Can't wait to taste 'em!
  20. Listen to Cathal Armstrong discuss how Restaurant Eve supports local farms in a July 28 interview on WETA-FM. http://www.weta.org/theintersection/media/...TION_JULY28.mp3 During the segment (about 2/3 into the show), he mentions Eve's sweet corn soup, which I've had the pleasure of tasting in a couple of permutations this month (last night with poached lobster). It's deliciously cornographic! The program also includes interviews with area aggies and Shoe Box Oven's Krishna Brown. BFA
  21. The pre-wedding savings plan skews me toward the cheap-but-good end of the dining continuum these days. Elevation Burger Mexicalli Blues Lost Dog Cafe Los Tios Del Ray Dreamery The Italian Store Eve, although not nearly often enough (see note above) Ray's the Steaks, ditto Why the hell do half the posts in this thread contain apologies for eating in Virginia? Sheesh. :-)
  22. I like the martini fad much more than the flash intro fad. Except for all that wodka nonsense.
  23. I've put together some nice party spreads from the Taverna deli counter. If you that style of food, it is well worth a try.
