  1. On what seems to be almost a tradition on days of the summer picnic, the Wilson Bridge project has scheduled some rather massive work on the Inner Loop at the Telegraph Road project. Plan accordingly if you are coming from Maryland into Virginia on the south side of town. Suggested alternatives are the American Legion Bridge and the always terrifying Harry Nice Bridge.
  2. I have to say I got some great strawberries at the West End Farmers Market on Sunday. Many of the vendors' berries weren't that great looking, but these were deep red, smelled like strawberries and were completely devoured by Sunday night. It's so nice to cut a strawberry and see all red instead of white!
  3. The only main advice I've ever heard about pizza stones is to never wash them as the water could soak in and then expand on the next heating. Leaving it in should be just fine and probably makes the oven more efficient (when heated, less efficient heating it up). I suppose you could try a different stone. Maybe granite or soapstone? I've always wanted to buy some of those Himalayan salt plates and use them as a baking stone. You know...for science.
  4. I had dinner here last Saturday evening and forgot to bump this topic. This is a restaurant that I still just love. I started off with Lumpiah (Indonesian crispy spring roll filled with chicken and bamboo shoots) which are still probably my favorite "fried spring roll" variant that I've ever tried. It's probably a combination of the lighter wrapper and filling. (Sorry no pics of this.) My main dish was the ever-popular--well, I order it a lot and I saw two other tables get it as well--Rames village platter (Steamed rice served with chicken with coconut sauce, spicy green bean, beef and chicken satay, twice cooked egg, and shrimp chips) which is nice in that it's like a mini-Rijstaffel (the big sampler tasting meal I have yet to attempt): All sort of different flavors, which is why I like to order this. Indeed, I'm not usually one for hard-boiled eggs--okay, I hate nearly all I try--but this version is the one I just love. Maybe it's the frying, the spicy sauce, who knows, but telur balado is a yummy treat. And, being in an Indonesian restaurant, my beverage for the evening is the traditional chocolate avocado smoothie: If you've never had one, you should try it; it helps soothe any extra heat from the food and has a great taste. The avocado lends a creamy note to a great chocolate flavor. (I will note that it wasn't quite as smooth as I like, so I might tell them to blend the ice even more the next time. I've noticed it tends to be more ice-chunky during busy times since they probably don't like to run the blender when there are a lot of people.)
  5. Well, if nothing else, Hollin Hall Pastry is conveniently on the way from National to the park. That said, I might try and bring some Enstrom's toffee from my trip.
  6. I'm not too sure what I'll be able to bring since I'm flying in that afternoon, but if I can make it, I'll probably bring pastries or some sort of sweet.
  7. Finally able to get to West End today. Picked up some macarons that called out to me, I'm excited to try the Birthday Cake flavor. I also picked up some greens (as it's about the best thing at the moment). I also had to get some of my downfall: Pequea Valley Farms Maple Yogurt. Yes, Pequea is full-fat, high-calorie and expensive. And yes, maple is even more expensive on top of that, but it's an addiction. If you've never had it, get some!
  8. Aww really? Nuts. I was planning on going there for dinner to try it out. Any recommendations for jeonbokjuk in Annandale? It seems to be available at many of the seafood-oriented places.
  9. I am already jealous of those going! I mean, I could go, but as I don't drink alcohol, the night would be a bit lost for me. Maybe I'll take what I'd spend on this and just go to town in Julien's butcher case this weekend...
  10. I believe Dduk Sarang is now (or was a while back) Juk Story, which seems to be a juk chain from Korea. I loved Dduk Sarang, but I haven't been to the latest incarnation of that space. I am hungering for some jeonbokjuk...
  11. Their website says to refrigerate it, but, sheesh, that's a lot of salt to need it!
  12. Reviving an old thread to notify fans of The Swiss Bakery that Specialicious is running a coupon for them. As for me, I will be buying at least some meringues as I've become addicted to their soft silky examples. (So good.)
  13. Well, it looks like Wara-Wara is now Honey Pig Izakaya (as today's LivingSocial deal informed me, the address seems about right from my knowledge of that strip mall). Seems fairly pricey and Don's last comment here makes me think it always was. Still, I might give it a try with the deal...
  14. I called and left a message. Though, as a teetotaler, I suppose much of the elan of this dinner is lost on me, but since I've never been to Sou'wester, I figure it's a shot at trying a new place! (And I can sample their fabulous selection of water.)
  15. Eeeeeeee...8 more days until new "How It's Made"!

  16. Or even a fair bit. Sigh. Thank you iPhone autocorrect. #fb

  17. I almost missed out on Draw A Bird Day. Here's my awful attempt! #DABDay #MadeWithPaper http://t.co/D3EJPKGg
