  1. Arugula with cherry tomatoes and fat-free balsamic dressing; a few slices of lean, lean turkey; and a stick of Weight Watchers low-fat string cheese. Yay post-gallbladder-removal low-fat diet. Yay.
  2. This is interesting. I usually use pasteurized-in-the-shell eggs for most cooking anyway, so safety doesn't matter to me anymore. But having a vegan girlfriend, a good egg substitute would make baking more accessible.
  3. Went in this morning for some jerky. Tried a few versions and got the lemongrass and one of the spicy varieties (of which there are a few!). Both very tender and good. I see myself coming back often! And then got some fried tofu at Thanh Son. Because one must.
  4. Hmm. Yeah, my first thought was MediterraFish in Merrifield, but that's a bit off the path for Alexandria. Hmm...
  5. It's been a couple years, but I also remember the Apple House in Linden having a bunch of hot sauces. Then again, I was mainly focused on buying the donuts.
  6. Time for Han Sung Oak to join the the restaurants in the little font, it is closed according to the Annandale VA blog: "The restaurant will not reopen because it will be too expensive to bring the system into compliance..."
  7. After Chef Seng had touted her Labor Day specials this week, I decided to stop in and give some a try. I started with the tapioca balls (sakoo yad sai) as an appetizer, and they were quite good. The contrast between the tapioca, the pork, some crunchy peanut within, wrapped in lettuce leaves? Mmm. But, not much can top the ping gai, grilled chicken with green papaya/rice noodle salad and sticky rice: Ping Gai by Fortran, on Flickr This might have been the most flavorful, juiciest chicken I've ever had. Apparently it's marinated in green lemongrass leaves...whatever it is, the skin was addictive!
  8. Here's a question that is Merrifield based, but not Mosaic (so feel free to move this, Don/mods). Does anyone have any information on the Italian Market and Trio Grill and Open Road Grill that seems ready to open soon next to the garden center? I was driving by today after giving blood thinking I hadn't heard much. It seems to be part of the restaurant group that does the Circa restaurants...which I've also never been to.
  9. I like the Trader Joe's Balsamic Vinegar. I use it for my salad dressings and the like.
  10. Mediterranean Bakery does indeed have a pretty extensive selection of hot sauces. It would be my first stop (though it helps I live right near it and am there nearly every week) and while you're there, you can partake in some stellar baklava! Another place you might try is Rocklands Barbecue. If I recall, they have a policy that if you bring in a hot sauce they don't carry, you get a free sandwich. That said, I'm not sure which site has the best "wall of fire".
  11. Stop tempting me, Don! I'm already thinking of getting some beef jerky this weekend! Never knew about this place... And, of course, if I go to Eden Center, I always seem to leave with a $6 box of fried tofu from Thanh Son. So addictive...
  12. Yeah, in my trips here I've found I enjoy their udon more than their katsu, so tend to the big udon/small katsu combination. (Actually, I've found most udon in Annandale isn't too bad. Yechon, Gaboja...they all do a decent udon. Then again, it's not hard to do a decent udon...)
  13. I want to say I've seen pearl sago in a market recently, but I just can't remember where. I'm hoping to do a market run tomorrow. If I see it, I'll let you know.
  14. I was "TheMatt" on USENET, BBSs, lots of places in the ol' days. I've mainly transitioned to "Fortran" on most boards and other online ventures mainly because I couldn't get TheMatt at gmail, but I could get "Fortran". As for why? Well, my name is Matt, and I am "the" Matt. (And I program in Fortran...)
  15. It's a "special order" that she'll do with a week's notice Monday through Thursday. Most of the dishes are on the main menu I think (or, in some cases, meat-ful versions). The joy of this was getting to taste so many different things. And technically it's vegetarian but sort of vegan by default perhaps. Not exactly a lot of butter, milk, eggs, &c. in Laotian food anyway. What were you thinking of that might be included but not technically vegan?
  16. Just came back from having the vegan tasting dinner to celebrate the anniversary with my girlfriend. Eight amazing dishes with a variety of flavors. Started with the crispy rice salad, then some soub pak (steamed vegetables). After these two dishes (which had a little spice) came a cooling mango salad. Next up was bamboo steamed in a banana leaf, followed by larb tofu. The meal then ended with a very light soup with great flavor (I want to say lemongrass), and the topper was khao mao avocado, sticky rice with avocado, coconut...mmm. All that food? $25 a person. An amazing meal, an amazing value. Next time my vegetarian sister or father are in town on a weekday, I think I know where I'm taking them! Now back to digesting and dreaming about the khao mao...
  17. Looking around Yelp, it appears many of the more red-sauce Italian and pizza joints might have it. Sal's NY Pizza has Brooklyn's "Famous" Spumoni. Pie-tanza has spumoni from Great Falls which seems to have spumoni available in 1.5 gal tubs (for the trade).
  18. Just had a couple bits of farmers market items for dinner. First, some Lemon Rosemary Bread from Bonaparte with my salmon. Quite good, very lemony actually. Then some strawberries with vanilla sugar and whipped cream for dessert. Mmm!
  19. The latest menu change at Silver Diner has brought some vegan dishes in (only lunch and dinner, but better than nothing). There was a Washington Post article about it, and here's a link to a PDF of the new menu. As someone whose girlfriend is vegan, this is kind of nice. I'm surprised they can't figure out any vegan breakfast items though. I mean, tofu scramble isn't that hard.
  20. Indeed, but with onion dip comes the eternal question: Ruffles or Wavy Lays?
  21. After seeing Goldenticket mention "chips and dip", I think I'm going to bring some. Why? Well, I haven't had chips and onion dip in a long time. And, nope, it's not going to be fancy artisinal free-range organic dip, no, I'm talking good ol' fashioned Lipton Onion Soup mix and sour cream!
  22. Actually, I think hummus is Arabic in origin, so pluralization might need an expert if it's a broken plural (kitāb -> kutub, etc.). ETA: I say we go with Latin, so the plural of hummus is hummūs.
  23. Yeah. Thirty pounds and the accessory caddy is bigger than it is! ETA: The promo video shows a bit of the dicing. I note that they don't show anyone cleaning it after that...
  24. Well, you could go nuts and buy that new KitchenAid dicing food processor Williams-Sonoma's been hawking. The gadget geek in me wants it, but I also realize I have a knife that can do much of that. Still, though, dicing...
  25. I think I'm a probably +0 and maybe a +1. As for what I'd bring, at the moment it's probably a dessert or some sort. Maybe snickerdoodle blondies, or perhaps some hokey pokey...just because I haven't made it in a while.
